QUOTE OF
THE M ONTH
“To acquire knowledge, one must
study; but to acquire wisdom, one
must observe.”
– Marilyn vosSavant
Sgt. Rick Vickrey, a supervisor with the Mott Community College Department of Public Safety, has been selected to attend the 255th Session of the FBI National
Academy, which runs Sept. 29 – Dec. 13, 2013 at the
Quantico, Virginia campus. There are only four sessions a
year and only 250 law enforcement professionals from all
over the world selected to attend each session. This will
be the first time an officer from MCC has been in attendance. "It is quite an honor for our department to have an
officer selected and nominated to go to the FBI National
Academy," said Chief Theresa Stephens-Lock, Director of
MCC's Department of Public Safety. "Only the top professionals are considered for this training," noted Chief
Lock. She completed the FBI National Academy 181st
Session in 1995 and Pulbic Safety's Lt. Michael Becker
completed Session 183rd in 1995. Chief Lock said Sgt. Vickrey was one of two MCC officers nominated and selected for the prestigious professional development, but only one can attend at a time.
"It's an awesome opportunity," Vickrey said. "Attending the FBI National Academy will help with
Sgt. Vickey's development as a law enforcement professional, and it's excellent for the department," Chief Lock added.
MCC receives grant from EPA to train
workers in cleanup of brownfield sites
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced that two federal brownfield grants totaling $545,000 would be awarded to Mott Community College and Genesee County to clean up
brownfield sites throughout the community, including Chevy in the Hole. Chevy in the Hole, also
known as the Delphi Flint West site, was a General Motors facility built along the Flint River.
Genesee County received $350,000 to replenish a brownfield revolving loan fund and MCC received $195,050 to establish a new job training program. EPA Region 5 Administrator Susan Hedman was joined by U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, Mayor Dayne Walling, Genesee County Treasurer Deb
Cherry, MCC President Dick Shaink, Kettering University President Robert McMahan, MCC Workforce Development Executive Dean Robert Matthews and other Genesee County leaders, at a press
conference held Aug. 22 to announce the funding project. "The grants will be used to clean up contaminated sites in Genesee County and to train 60 people to work in environmental fields," Hedman
said. "These grants will fund work that is good for the environment, good for the economy and
good for Flint." Several local companies have agreed to provide graduates of an MCC environmental training program with internships, on-the-job training and employment opportunities. EPA officials indicated that the agency has provided $3.4 million for brownfield assessments and cleanups
in Flint and Genesee County since 2004, noting that EPA, the City of Flint, Genesee County, Mott
Community College and Kettering University will continue to work together to redevelop the
Chevy in the Hole site.

Yourist Studio Gallery in Ann Arbor is holding an exhibit of works
by Art Prof. Thom Bohnert, entitled "Thom Bohnert: Exhibit of drawings and sculpture." The exhibit runs through Friday, Oct. 4, with an
artist's reception on Friday, Sept. 13 from 5 to 8 pm. Thom Bohnert
brings a unique blend of engineering, poetry, and whimsy to his art,
often combining wire armature, wet-looking clay fragments, and surfaces that reflect his deep understanding of clay and glaze chemistry. His
evocative, archaeological forms challenge viewers to expand their thinking about the possibilities of clay as medium. Bohnert received an MFA
from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1971 and has taught drawing and
ceramics at MCC for the past 40 years. His work is widely exhibited and
published. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
Please visit youristpottery.com for gallery hours and details. Yourist Studio Gallery is located at 1133 Broadway, Ann Arbor. The phone number

Sim Lab Gets New
Cutting-Edge Upgrades
Students in the Health Sciences Division will find an updated,
cutting edge simulation lab for realistic, hands-on practice thanks
to the vision and hard work of a team of Mott Community College
administration and staff, reported Gail Burleson, Nursing Instructor/Simulation Chairperson. Led by project director Michelle
Glenn, Manager of Career & Technical Education, the updates include:
• Remodeling of a study room to become the new remote
control room. The control room now has separate computers
and large video screens for each of the three simulation
rooms.
• Remodeling of a study room to become the new debriefing
room, with a large TV screen, computer, and table and
chairs for students to review their performance
• A new audio visual system for each of the three simulation
rooms using Crestron technology configured by Chris Bolla,
ITS Educational Media Production Manager. Chris also had
new cameras installed, as the previous ones were unreliable.
The cameras are digital, anticipating the newer technology
that will be in use.
• Installation of "SimView" Laerdal's state of the art
audiovisual technology into the third simulation room, a
room that could not be used for simulation in the past
• The purchase of SimMan 3G, the most realistic manikin
available. He can bleed, have tears, and react to
medications as well as having pulses, chest rising, and
breath sounds that are realistic in sound and location.
• Two sets of validated scenarios for SimMan 3G
• Two days of training on the use of SimMan 3G for 8
members of the simulation faculty and staff from Laerdal's
chief educator, Rick Ritt.
The project involved a large team, some of which included administrators Vice President of Academic Affairs Amy Fugate, retired Heath Sciences Dean Patricia Markowicz, and former interim
Dean Steve Robinson), simulation faculty Gail Burleson, simulation staff members Samantha Badalmente, Karen Curtiss and
James McTiernan. The project also received support from ITS
Support Services staff, including Marc Smith, Annette Le Blanc,
ITS Media Services Chris Bolla and Brian Williams, plus architecture and facilities professionals, all guided by project director
Michelle Glenn. Student and faculty evaluations of previous simulation experiences also drove many of the updates. The entire project was completed in time for a group of nursing students in the
Spring session of NRSG 102 to use SimMan 3G.
"The students needed to remediate assessment skills, and both the
students and the faculty reported that SimMan 3G was the
"man"ikin for the job," Burleson added.
