Recycling program in full swing at MCC

As part of MCC's continuing initiatives toward a green campus, the College will be expanding its recycling efforts into all campus buildings with containers dedicated for the recycle of cans, plastics and paper by the start of Fall

Semester 2013. The program will first be implemented as a pilot in the Curtice-Mott Complex beginning June 3, with full implementation in all main campus buildings and branch center locations by September.

Recycle stations, comprised of three separate containers, one each for Cans/Plastics, Paper, and

Trash, will be strategically located throughout each building, primarily in corridors and public spaces.

Each container will feature a different size, color and shape opening in the lid corresponding with the type of material to be placed in each container. Each will also display a picture and text describing which waste type is to be placed in each container. The three containers will be placed next to one another and connected together to create a stable recycle station.

In addition to containers inside the buildings, additional dumpsters dedicated for recyclable materials, including cardboard, will also be placed on campus near existing trash dumpsters. Paper

Recycle Containers will also be placed in every classroom and office on main campus and at all branch Center Locations. If your area disposes of large amounts of paper, a larger paper recycling toter can be requested.

Styrofoam cups, takeout containers, paper plates and cups, plastic lids or anything with food/beverage waste is not recyclable. Contact Tim Broomfield or Carri Farah in the Physical Plant at 762-5684 for more information.

MCC staff and students showcased in annual

"Shakespeare in the Park" productions

For ten years, Flint's "Shakespeare in the Park" in Kearsley Park (just north of the MCC main campus across Longway Boulevard) has drawn rave reviews and enthusiastic crowds. This year, the production is going beyond Kearsley Park to parks across the city and Genesee

County. This year's production– Much Ado About Nothing – features two MCC staff members; Chemistry professor Sue Ellen Hange, cast as

Mistress Peabody, a member of the town watch, and Public Information Director Michael Kelly, who portrays Leonato, the Governor of

Messina. Several MCC students and alumni are also in the cast. Much

Ado About Nothing is generally considered one of Shakespeare's best comedies, combining robust hilarity with more serious meditations on honor, shame and court politics. It opens at Kearsley Park with performances on June 14, 15 and 16 then moves to For-Mar Nature Preserve, Linden's Clover Beach and Flushing County Park.

The opening performance on June 14 is a fund-raising gala but all other performances are free. The full schedule of performance dates is:

Fri. June 14, 8 pm - Kearsley Park Opening Night Gala

Sat. June 15, 8 pm - Kearsley Park

Sun. June 16, 2 pm - Kearsley Park [MATINEE only]

Thur. June 20, 7 pm - For-Mar Nature Preserve

Fri. June 21, 7 pm - Linden, Clover Beach

Sat. June 22, 7 pm - Flushing County Park

MCC Media Arts and Entertainment Technology Program assists with production of show about Civil War on public television

Students with Mott Community College's Media Arts & Entertainment Technology (MAET) were on hand to assist with the launching of a television program highlighting Michigan's role in

America's Civil War. The MAET students worked with iMichigan

Productions (iMP) producers, Flint-based media professional

Michael J. Thorp, and a group of eighth graders at Grand Blanc West

Middle School who helped create "Michael J. Thorp's The American

Civil War Years" (ACWY). Each spring, thousands of Michigan eighth graders study the American Civil War. This year, the Grand

Blanc West Middle School media production students took on production of two 30-minute programs covering Civil War topics, including Michigan's contributions to the war. The shows aired around the state on public television stations and community access education channels.

Media interns from Mott Community College's MAET program who assisted iMP and the Grand Blanc West students include Jeff

Ostby, Shanna Massey, Sean Stevens, Chad Osentoski, and Vincent

Hughes. ACWY recently garnered two 2013 EMMY nominations from the Michigan Chapter of the National Academy of Television

Arts and Sciences for Best Youth Program and Best Historical/ Cultural Program. According to iMP Producer/Director Rodney W.

Brown, the show brings together Civil War living historians who are committed to helping others understand people’s patriotism, dedication and sacrifice during the time of the Civil War, and today's returning veterans who, in their own words, talk about the very same commitments after service in combat situations around the world.

iMP is an educational media production company based in Grand

Blanc and East Lansing. For more information about iMP, please visit http://www.americancivilwaryears.com/airdates.html.
