MCC Among three Michigan
employers named semifinalists
for Department of Defense award
Mott Community College is one of three Michigan employers among 138 that have been
named semifinalists for an award given for employer support of Guard and Reserve employees.
Compuware Corp. in Detroit, Davenport University in Grand Rapids and Mott Community College
are in the running for the 2013 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. It's presented by a Department of Defense operational committee called the Employer Support of the
Guard and Reserve. This year's 138 semifinalists stood out among 2,899 employers nominated by
a Guard or Reserve employee. ESGR will announce the 2013 Freedom Award finalists next month
after a review board comprised of military and civilian leaders selects the 30 most supportive
employers. Up to 15 award recipients will be announced early this summer and honored in
Washington, D.C., in September.
MCC refinances $51.4 million in bond
debt to save $3 million
Taking advantage of the current financial environment, Mott Community College has refinanced a large portion of its voter-approved bond debt. The move has saved area taxpayers over
$3.3 million.
"The exact figure we've saved the taxpayers is $3,332,651.18," stated MCC Chief Financial
Officer Larry Gawthrop. "The current low-interest situation isn't going to last forever and we
thought it was time to act."
By lowering the interest rate on its long-term debt, Mott College has reduced the amount of
money taxpayers have to repay. "This is over three million dollars that will be staying in our community and in the pockets of the local taxpayers," MCC President Dick Shaink pointed out. "Mott
Community College takes its responsibility to our community seriously and this is one more step
we can take to help our own area."
The college can issue bonds under the authority of the State of Michigan with the approval of
voters in the college district (consisting of the 21 school districts centered in Genesee County).
Voters last renewed MCC's ongoing bonding authority in 2007.

Fair a Huge Success
The Office of Professional Development & Experiential Learning, in partnership with Phi Theta Kappa and the MCC Student Life
Center, hosted a Spring/Summer 2013 Volunteer Service Fair. This
event was attended by about 250 people and was designed to introduce the members of our campus community to representatives from
a diverse group of local not-for-profit organizations, is now actively
recruiting volunteers for projects and events this spring and summer.
Nearly 40 different community organizations were in attendance at
the Service Fair, each with a variety of volunteer opportunities
available to students, faculty and staff at MCC.
American GI Forum/Hispanic
Technology & Community
Center Receives $2,500 Gift
The American GI Forum/Hispanic Technology & Community
Center is the recipient of a donation from a Detroit-based benefactor.
The Center recently received a $2,500 check from the Cynthia Estrada
Charity Fund of Detroit to further the work and mission of the Hispanic Technology & Community Center (HTCC).
"This is to be used to help fund general operations of the center,"
stated Carlos Cisneros, Community Outreach and Engagement Coordinator with the Mott Community College Workforce Education Center,
who also serves on the executive board of the Hispanic Technology &
Community Center.
"We will be awarding a $1,000 scholarship this year along with
helping to fund our Food Pantry," Cisneros added. "The award is significant in that it further strengthens our bond with the United Auto
Workers as they have supported us over the years. This is largely due
in part to the fact that many of our board members are retired UAW
members, and we can't forget the driving force behind this – Mr.
Domingo Berlanga, Commander of the American GI Forum of Flint."
The Cynthia Estrada Fund, established to work with area foundations
whose missions are to enhance and improve the quality of life for underserved citizens, is particularly interested in cultivating area youth
to empower them as future leaders. A longtime union organizer and
social activist, Cynthia Estrada is the first Latina elected to serve as a
UAW vice president. "The work you are doing in the community is
laudable," Estrada noted in a letter to Berlanga. "I'm hopeful programs
will be developed which will engage the youth of the community to
recognize the value of community activism and look forward to collaborating with you in your endeavors."
The American GI Forum (AGIF) of Flint, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, is the oldest Hispanic non-profit organization in the country. Its mission is to champion and advance the education and training
of Hispanics and other citizens of the Flint area. In 2001, the AGIF
Flint Chapter established the Hispanic Technology & Community
Center with help from a federal grant and the support of Mott Community College. Located at 2101 Lewis Street in Flint, the HTCC continues to meet the needs of the community by offering a variety of
services, including computer-based educational services, bi-lingual instructions in English as a Second Language and Spanish as a Second
Language, Spanish translation services, and a tax preparation service.
For more information, please call (810) 424-3760.
The mission of the Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) is
to create a culture of continuous learning for all faculty, staff and
administrators at Mott Community College. The Center's work
could not be accomplished without the active support of their
many volunteer presenters. Since Sept. 1, 2012, more than 90
people have volunteered to facilitate a workshop or other activity
for the CTL.
The CTL is honoring faculty/staff members for going above
and beyond the call of duty and for their dedication and commitment to supporting the professional and personal development of
their colleagues at MCC. The following faculty and staff are
being recognized as the CTL Most Valuable Presenters (MVPs)
for 2012-13:
