An entrepreneurship competition inspired by ABC
TV's hit reality business show "Shark Tank," sponsored
by MCC's Ballenger Eminent Persons Lecture Series, is
scheduled for Thursday, April 11, 2013. Applications for
anyone interested in participating are due by Friday,
March 22.
The Bear Trap 2013 follows the Nov. 1, 2012 Ballenger program that featured ABC's "Shark Tank" star
and FUBU clothing line founder Daymond John. One of
the most highly-respected business experts in America,
John kicked off the Ballenger series entitled "Create, Build,
Succeed: An Entrepreneurship Conference," delivering the
keynote address at the Ballenger Field House. The Nov. 1 Ballenger
program also featured sessions for business students held prior to the free,
public lecture, with the announcement that a "Shark Tank"-style business competition would
follow in 2013.
"The Bear Trap" features three categories of competition for budding entrepreneurs: area high
school students, MCC students and residents of Genesee, Lapeer and Livingston counties, who
will vie for a variety of prizes, designed to kick-start their businesses. Prizes include MCC scholarships, laptop computers, iPads, MCC Bookstore gift cards, Small Business Association (SBA)
loan interviews, business owner mentorships, business plan consulting, accounting, tax and legal
startup services.
The primary focus of this installment of the Ballenger Lecture Series is assisting students with
creating, building and succeeding in business.
"We are assisting our business students who are interested in entrepreneurship, in exploring
their options and developing viable business plans," stated Lisa Cooley Banks, Ballenger Chair,
MCC Accounting Program Coordinator and Associate Professor of Accounting and Management.
"Our goal is to encourage and support our students toward their business and entrepreneurial
dreams."
For an application to download, go to www.Ballengerlecture.mcc.edu and for more information, contact Prof. Banks at BearTrap@mcc.edu, or call the MCC Business Division at (810) 7620429.
The Ballenger Lecture Series has brought dozens of renowned national and international leaders to the Mott Community College main campus in Flint for decades. In recent years, the series
presented lectures by renowned filmmaker/director Spike Lee; Lech Walesa, former President of
Poland and founder of the Polish Solidarity Movement; legendary entertainer/activist Harry Belafonte, poet/singer Patti Smith and prominent civil rights attorney Morris Dees. For information
about the Ballenger Lecture Series, please call the Foundation for Mott Community College at
(810) 762-0425.

Mott Library Awarded
Muslim Journeys
Bookshelf
The MCC Library has been selected to receive the Bridging
Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA). The program aims to familiarize public audiences
in the United States with the people, places, history, faith and
cultures of Muslims in the U.S. and around the world.
The books and films comprising the Bookshelf were
selected with the advice of librarians and cultural programming
experts, as well as distinguished scholars in the fields of
anthropology, world history, religious studies, interfaith
dialogue, the history of art and architecture, world literature,
Middle East studies, Southeast Asian studies, African studies and
Islamic studies. The Muslim Journeys Bookshelf is intended to
address both the need and desire of the American public for
trustworthy and accessible resources about Muslim beliefs and
practices and the cultural heritage associated with Islamic
civilizations.
A project of the National Endowment for the Humanities,
conducted in cooperation with the American Library Association, The Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys is provided with major support by a grant from Carnegie Corporation
of New York. Additional support for the arts and media components was provided by the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic

MCC Competes in Annual
Collegiate Recycling
Contest
The annual recycling competition between Baker College, Kettering University, Mott Community College and the University of
Michigan-Flint runs March 1 to March 31. The event is designed to
increase awareness about recycling in our community. Students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to bring acceptable assorted recyclable materials to the local recycling centers at
any of the four schools. Two awards will be presented to the winners
of Most Pounds per Student and Most Total Pounds of Recyclables
Overall per campus. The school winners will be announced at the
Earth Day Celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at UM-Flint’s campus
in the Harding Mott University Center. Clean plastic containers
numbered 1 through 7, aluminum cans, steel cans and small scrap
metal are all acceptable. Mixed papers, such as newspaper, junk
mail, office paper, cardboard, phone books, paperback books, magazines and shoe boxes, can also be brought to the receptacles. Glass
and styrofoam will not be accepted. Last year, Kettering University
took the award for the Most Pounds per Student, while Baker College won the Most Total Pounds of Recyclables. "MCC's Green Initiatives Team and the students forming the MCC Environmental
Club will get the word out far and wide through social media, at
meetings and by e-mail this year," said Rebecca Gale-Gonzalez,
MCC marketing assistant and web content manager. "It’s a beautiful
thing that with all our emphasis on reducing waste, we are finding
our numbers of pounds of recyclable waste going down. But with a
little help from our neighbors, we should hold a respectable collection amount in the competition again this year." This year’s event is
sponsored for the second consecutive year by Great Lakes Recycling, Brent Run Landfill/Waste Connections Inc. and Metro Sanitation, a local transportation company. Call Rebecca Gale-Gonzalez
at 762-0455 or visit the website at
http://www.mcc.edu/earthday/earthday_recycle.php for more information.

Works of MCC
Photography Program
Coordinator Robert
Rentschler featured in
exhibit at Fine Arts Gallery
MCC's Fine Arts Gallery in the Visual Arts and Design Center will present an exhibition of work by Robert Rentschler, Photography Program Coordinator at MCC, titled Light, Life and
Lens. His work will be in the gallery through Tuesday, March 12.
This event, made possible in part by The Ballenger Trust, is free
and open to the public.
A full-time faculty member at MCC, Rentschler received a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Arts and Sciences
from Western Michigan University in 1980. In addition to teaching, he is a photographer, videographer, producer and director for
Images Audio-Visual Productions. This work includes many
films, including History of Freestyle Skiing, Guiding the Blind
Skier and Fire Suppression System Operation and Techniques for
Helicopter Hangers. He is a licensed pilot and flew at least once
a month for 15 years photographing large construction projects in
the Detroit area.
His recent work for this exhibition will include black and
white and color images, shot while traveling with his family. His
artist statement reads in part: "Basically, my love of photography
is very simple; I just really enjoy framing a subject. Looking
through a viewfinder gives me a chance to concentrate on a subject and clear all the distractions out of the way. The camera and
lens let me capture the subject and nothing else. Sometimes, it is
enough for me to simply look through the viewfinder, frame and
focus on a scene.
Photography has taken me on a great journey from those
early days processing film in the bathroom of my childhood home
to running my own photo/video business for 25 years to now,
teaching photography full-time at Mott Community College. I
have been so very fortunate to have worked for many corporations, publications and individuals. It truly has been a great ride."
The Fine Arts Gallery hours are 9 am to 4:30 pm, Monday
through Friday. The public is always welcome. For more information, call the MCC Art and Design office at 762-0443.
