Detroit Artist Chrys
Bonnay-Lewis Featured in
Exhibit in Fine Arts Gallery
Mott Community College's Fine Arts Gallery in the Visual Arts
and Design Center is presenting an exhibition of work by Detroit area
ceramic artist Chrys Bonnay-Lewis titled Stax, on Stax, on Stax. Her
work will be in the gallery from Monday, Feb. 4 through Tuesday,
Feb. 19, 2013. In addition, Bonnay-Lewis will give a public presentation about her work on Wednesday, Feb. 6, at 12 noon in the Visual
Arts and Design Center, Room 130. These events, made possible in
part by Ballenger Trust, are free and open to the public.
Chrys Bonnay-Lewis is the Manager of Education Programs for
Pewabic Pottery in Detroit and an Adjunct Faculty member in the Humanities Art Department at Oakland Community College. Her recent
exhibitions include Wit and Function, Pewabic Pottery, 2012; Strictly
Functional Pottery National, 2010, and Black and White Show, Artifact Gallery, 2011. She was the National Council on Education for the
Ceramics Arts Regina Brown Fellow in 2010 and received the Strictly
Functional Pottery National, 2011 Best in Show. Her work for this exhibition will include 16 stacked combinations of plates, bowls and
spoons – all of glazed English porcelain.
Her Artist Statement reads as follows:
"It is my grandmother's ladylike traditions that influence my current
body of work. She had a penchant for beautiful objects and set an elegant beautiful table. On special occasions, she would dress her table
with matching service pieces, china and stemware as the family gathered. When they were not being used, these treasured items were
stacked neatly behind the glass doors of her formal china cabinet. I
have created tableware that is interchangeable, fun and engages the
user in the creative process. Each piece functions on its own, but also
works within a variety of settings. Randomly placed or thoughtfully
stacked, these pieces provide practical solutions for today's modern
lifestyles. Equally at home at the kitchen counter or at a finely appointed dining table, I invite the users to create with my service wear
their own signature place setting, service set or still life, worthy of
grandma's table or glass cabinets."
The Fine Arts Gallery is located in the Visual Arts and Design
Center. Gallery hours are 9 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday. The
public is always welcome. For more information, call the Art and Design office at (810) 762-0443.

Feb. 14 – "An Artistic Look at Flint's
History"with Artist LaVarne Ross
Born and raised in Flint Michigan, Lavarne Ross is a largely
self-taught artist. At a young age he drew pictures of the horses
on his grandfather's Arkansas farm. Much of his inspiration for
his art, prints and posters comes from a desire to capture the
changes in both his hometown of Flint and rural Arkansas.
Lavarne Ross' most recognizable art, prints and posters are the
pieces in his "Dancer" series, in which he conveys the motion of
the dance through the flowing garments of the figures. Ross also
shows his appreciation for jazz in works where he gives a visual
interpretation of the music. Lavarne Ross currently resides in
Mount Morris, Michigan. Whenever the opportunity lends itself,
Lavarne works with and encourages aspiring young artists to appreciate and pursue the gift God has given them. Ross continually
works to communicate his heritage and vision through his art,
prints and posters.
Feb 21 - "Music Tells Our Story" with Gwen
Hemphill
Gwen Hemphill's vocal style is very versatile. Her repertoire

Bo Williams, just to name a few. She has shared the stage and
opened shows for The Williams Brothers, The Canton Spirituals,
Shirley Caesar, The Mighty Bank Sisters and the list goes on.
One of her most memorable moments was singing backup vocals
on stage at Pine Knob (DTE) for Michael McDonald.
