Shaltz, President of Shaltz Automation and a founding member of Flint's Uptown Developments, will be the keynote speaker for the 34th Annual Citywide Tribute Dinner in honor of Martin L. King, Jr., centered on the theme: "Embracing the Brotherhood of Mankind." The dinner celebration is scheduled for 6 pm, Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013 at the Sarvis Conference Center, 1231 E. Kearsley St. in Flint. This event is open to the public. Philip Shaltz' business accomplishments have included many acquisitions and startups that today include Shaltz Automation, one of the fastest growing automation companies in Michigan with expertise in automation, controls and mechtronics; hss Material Management Systems, dedicated to lowering the total cost of indirect materials for customers; and Commerce Connect, a supply chain and distribution center, as well as many other entities, oriented toward business development and community-mindedness. In 2003, Shaltz was among several businessmen founding the Uptown Six group, responsible for the focus on redevelopment of downtown Flint. This group has redeveloped various properties which have become the catalyst for the continued expansion of the city's urban areas. First Street Lofts, the Community Foundation of Greater Flint building, the Rowe building and Wade Trim, which became the first new build in downtown Flint in 25 years, are among Uptown Six accomplishments. Shaltz holds positions on The Hurley Medical Center Board of Managers, the Hurley Foundation, Citizens Bank Community Board, Center for Community Progress, in addition to serving in an advisory capacity to a host of other local organizations. Shaltz also served on the Crim Fitness Foundation Board for several years. Recruited to help raise funds for the Crim Road Race in 1983, Shaltz became an instant supporter of that cause and holds the distinction of being one of 22 individuals who have run all of the Crim's 10 mile-road races. His most recent achievement is creation of The Flint Diaper Bank, a 501C3, non-profit organization with a goal of providing, through the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, 500,000 to 1,000,000 diapers per year to residents in the greater Genesee county area, free of charge. The first 250,000 diapers are expected to be available at the food bank in February, 2013. Lisa Poma, President's Office Executive Assistant, provides a report on the Whaley Holiday Program 2012. "The President's Office would like to thank all of those individuals who donated to the Whaley Children's Home Holiday Program," Lisa noted. "Because of your generosity and support, MCC was able to sponsor eight children this year. We purchased robes, pajamas, slippers, shoes, toys and stocking stuffers for each child. A special thank-you to our volunteer coordinators, shoppers and gift wrappers -- Vanessa Bowie, Kim Brown, Jenny Kroninger, Lisa Poma, Michelle Robinson and Laura Tripp. Again, a BIG thank-you to all of you!" MCC faculty, students, and members of the community gathered to record a song for the family of Amir Hekmati entitled "I Will Fly (Amir's Song)" on Dec. 7. The song was written by MCC Choral Director Matthew Packer, with additional orchestration by MCC Music Professor William Withem. Recorded at the Bryson Studio in the Media Arts and Education Technology area, proceeds from the sale of the song will go to support the Hekmati family. The song will be available for downloading off the freeamir.org website. Here's news from Public Safety Administrative Assistant Beverly Lloyd: The Department of Public Safety held its first Biennial Appreciation Dinner on Dec. 13. "With more than 70 people in attendance, the evening was very successful, Beverly reported. Prior to the event, Public Safety employees were nominated by their supervisors as exceptional employees, and presented with awards in three categories. The award recipients were: Dispatcher of Year Monica Taylor, Public Safety Officer of the Year - Joann Guigar, Police Officer of the Year - Rogelio Villarreal. Officer Villarreal was also chosen as the "Outstanding Employee of the Year." The evening was also highlighted with an award and acknowledgment going to Vice President of Student and Administrative Services Scott J. Jenkins for his outstanding leadership and vision for the Department of Public Safety. Additionally, Sgt. Nancy Metcalfe received an award for her dedication and commitment to community service. "We were joined by numerous members of the Mott College family who expressed their appreciation for the services we provide," Beverly added. "We appreciated their comments and support. The evening concluded with the distribution of the centerpieces to 13 lucky winners. Each centerpiece contained a Public Safety coffee mug that was making its debut that night. Congratulations to all of the recipients. Thank you to everyone for a job well done!" DisAbility Services Specialist Jeff Simms provides a report on the Relay For Life of Flint event, which will be held May 31-June 1, 2013. Automotive Instructor Matt Roda invited the general manager of Northwest Tire and High Tech Service to give a presentation to approximately 50 automotive students. The presentation was about employment opportunities within the company. Tom Crampton, Dean of Regional Technology Initiatives, joined Clark Harris in attending the I-69 International Trade Corridor Event. The summit included information on the four-county (Genesee, Lapeer, Shiawassee, and St. Clair) corridor that's been created in an effort to position the area as an important internal transporta- Around Campus tion hub. Electronics faculty members have been involved in several outreach/recruitment efforts. Electronics Instructor Jason Slade visited with students interested in electrical wiring at the Genesee Area Skill Center (GASC); went to Lapeer Ed Tech Center and visited with building trades and electronics students to discuss MCC opportunities in the technology programs and provided a tour of the RTC for students with Flint's International Academy. Jason has also completed a transfer guide with Lansing Community College to allow students to take MCC courses through ELEC 235 (earning our certificate or degree) to allow for transfer to LCC's electrical lineman program (affiliated with Consumers Energy). Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) Prof. Dennis Hughes worked with Engineering Exploration faculty from GASC to give the students a tour of the RTC and discuss CADD and related program opportunities. Building Construction Instructor Chuck Breidenstein presented a one-day Contracts and Liabilities workshop for the Building Industry Certification program in Baltimore at the National Remodeler's Convention held in the Fall. He also presented a Certified Aging in Place Specialist program to the Builders Association in Ann Arbor and has presented Fair Housing Compliance Seminars to several hundred employees with local Multi-Family Property Management firms and Real Estate Broker CEU programs for the Detroit area. Chuck Breidenstein shares the following observation about his students. "Nearing the end of our Construction Business Management course, we discovered an interesting and unexpected result. Several BCON students nearing completion of their Associate's degree are considering a Bachelor's in Business Administration to enhance their employability skills. I found this to be exciting and welcome news for our soon-to-be alumni. Perhaps we will see these people placed with some national construction firms in years to come." Student Life Coordinator Dawn Vanniman lets us know that Student Government Association Vice President Dante Dunn is graduating with both his Associate's degree from MCC and a Bachelor's degree from Northwood. Dante was the Student Government Association President last year. He has headed several initiatives for SGA, such as this year's "Gold Out" at the college basketball games. Dante plans to enroll in a Master's Program in August at Emory University. "He's been very involved and consistently tries to convince other students to become involved on campus," Dawn said. "He encourages students to stay involved. It's been a pleasure to work with Dante on SGA." Computer Services User Support Technician Mark Higham is now president of the Professional/Technical Union. He also received the October 2012 Kudos & Compliments award, MCC's monthly employee recognition program. TRiO SSS Coordinators Sara Butka and Sherry Weeder are proud to announce that TRiO SSS Alumni Abbie Lemmon graduated from the University of Michigan-Flint on Dec. 9 with a Bachelor of Arts in English with a Specialization in Writing and a minor in Women and Gender Studies. Abbie also received the highest academic award an undergraduate can receive, the prestigious Maize and Blue Award. MCC Announces Process for Filling Board of Trustee Vacancy The Mott Community College Board of Trustees is currently accepting applications from candidates interested in serving on the board. With her election as State Representative for the 48th District in November, former MCC Trustee Pamela M. Faris was required by law to resign from the Mott Community College Board of Trustees before taking her new post. Faris was appointed by the Board of Trustees in 2010 and elected to a full term in 2011. Faris announced her resignation at the December 17, 2012 meeting of the Board of Trustees. Her resignation took effect as of December 27, 2012, creating a vacancy on the Board which must be filled within 30 days by a vote of the remaining MCC trustees. The appointment will begin on Jan. 28, 2013 and will expire on Dec. 31, 2014. To be eligible for appointment, each applicant must be a qualified voter residing within the Mott Community College District, which consists of the 21 school districts contained within the Genesee Intermediate School District. Applicants must provide a signed letter indicating desire to be considered, a personal resume and evidence of eligibility, such as a government-issued photo ID or a voter registration card. The materials must be submitted to the MCC Office of the President and Board of Trustees by no later than 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2013. Loeb Trust Lends Support to Foundation for MCC The Foundation for Mott Community College recently announced its gratitude to the Stella & Frederick Loeb Charitable Trust for its ongoing support. This year, the Loeb Trust gave generously to the Mott, Motown & More Lip Sync show and the Ballenger Eminent Persons Lecture Series. The Loeb Trust donated $2,500 and $500, respectively, to the two MCC programs which continue to gain broad community support and attention. "We are so grateful for the support of the Stella & Frederick Loeb Charitable Trust with these two community initiatives," said Lennetta Coney, Foundation for Mott Community College President.
