Philip Shaltz' business accomplishments have included many acquisitions and startups that today include
Shaltz Automation, one of the fastest growing automation companies in Michigan with expertise in automation, controls and mechtronics; hss Material Management Systems, dedicated to lowering the total
cost of indirect materials for customers; and Commerce Connect, a supply chain and distribution center,
as well as many other entities, oriented toward business development and community-mindedness. In
2003, Shaltz was among several businessmen founding the Uptown Six group, responsible for the focus
on redevelopment of downtown Flint. This group has redeveloped various properties which have become the catalyst for the continued expansion of the city's urban areas. First Street Lofts, the Community
Foundation of Greater Flint building, the Rowe building and Wade Trim, which became the first new
build in downtown Flint in 25 years, are among Uptown Six accomplishments.
Shaltz holds positions on The Hurley Medical Center Board of Managers, the Hurley Foundation,
Citizens Bank Community Board, Center for Community Progress, in addition to serving in an advisory
capacity to a host of other local organizations. Shaltz also served on the Crim Fitness Foundation Board
for several years. Recruited to help raise funds for the Crim Road Race in 1983, Shaltz became an instant
supporter of that cause and holds the distinction of being one of 22 individuals who have run all of the
Crim's 10 mile-road races. His most recent achievement is creation of The Flint Diaper Bank, a 501C3,
non-profit organization with a goal of providing, through the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, 500,000 to
1,000,000 diapers per year to residents in the greater Genesee county area, free of charge. The first
250,000 diapers are expected to be available at the food bank in February, 2013. The MLK Tribute Dinner is sponsored by Baker College of Flint, Davenport University, MLive/The Flint Journal, HealthPlus
of Michigan, Kettering University, Mott Community College and The University of Michigan-Flint.

provides a report on the Whaley Holiday Program 2012. "The
President's Office would like to thank all of those individuals who
donated to the Whaley Children's Home Holiday Program," Lisa

sponsor eight children this year. We purchased robes, pajamas, slippers, shoes, toys and stocking stuffers for each child. A special
thank-you to our volunteer coordinators, shoppers and gift wrappers -- Vanessa Bowie, Kim Brown, Jenny Kroninger, Lisa Poma,
Michelle Robinson and Laura Tripp. Again, a BIG thank-you to all
of you!"
MCC faculty, students, and members of the community gathered to record a song for the family of Amir Hekmati entitled "I
Will Fly (Amir's Song)" on Dec. 7. The song was written by MCC
Choral Director Matthew Packer, with additional orchestration by
MCC Music Professor William Withem. Recorded at the Bryson
Studio in the Media Arts and Education Technology area, proceeds
from the sale of the song will go to support the Hekmati family.
The song will be available for downloading off the freeamir.org
website.
Here's news from Public Safety Administrative Assistant Beverly Lloyd: The Department of Public Safety held its first Biennial

to the event, Public Safety employees were nominated by their supervisors as exceptional employees, and presented with awards in
three categories. The award recipients were: Dispatcher of Year Monica Taylor, Public Safety Officer of the Year - Joann Guigar,
Police Officer of the Year - Rogelio Villarreal. Officer Villarreal

Department of Public Safety. Additionally, Sgt. Nancy Metcalfe
received an award for her dedication and commitment to community service. "We were joined by numerous members of the Mott
College family who expressed their appreciation for the services we
provide," Beverly added. "We appreciated their comments and support. The evening concluded with the distribution of the centerpieces to 13 lucky winners. Each centerpiece contained a Public

Clark R. Harris, Dean of the Technology Division, brings
news from his area. Automotive Instructor Matt Roda invited the
general manager of Northwest Tire and High Tech Service to give a
presentation to approximately 50 automotive students. The presentation was about employment opportunities within the company.
Tom Crampton, Dean of Regional Technology Initiatives, joined
Clark Harris in attending the I-69 International Trade Corridor
Event. The summit included information on the four-county (Genesee, Lapeer, Shiawassee, and St. Clair) corridor that's been created
in an effort to position the area as an important internal transporta-

tion hub. Electronics faculty members have been involved in several outreach/recruitment efforts. Electronics Instructor Jason
Slade visited with students interested in electrical wiring at the
Genesee Area Skill Center (GASC); went to Lapeer Ed Tech Center and visited with building trades and electronics students to discuss MCC opportunities in the technology programs and provided
a tour of the RTC for students with Flint's International Academy.
Jason has also completed a transfer guide with Lansing Community College to allow students to take MCC courses through ELEC
235 (earning our certificate or degree) to allow for transfer to
LCC's electrical lineman program (affiliated with Consumers Energy). Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) Prof. Dennis
Hughes worked with Engineering Exploration faculty from GASC
to give the students a tour of the RTC and discuss CADD and related program opportunities. Building Construction Instructor
Chuck Breidenstein presented a one-day Contracts and Liabilities
workshop for the Building Industry Certification program in Baltimore at the National Remodeler's Convention held in the Fall. He
also presented a Certified Aging in Place Specialist program to the
Builders Association in Ann Arbor and has presented Fair Housing
Compliance Seminars to several hundred employees with local
Multi-Family Property Management firms and Real Estate Broker
CEU programs for the Detroit area. Chuck Breidenstein shares the
following observation about his students. "Nearing the end of our
Construction Business Management course, we discovered an interesting and unexpected result. Several BCON students nearing
completion of their Associate's degree are considering a Bachelor's
in Business Administration to enhance their employability skills. I
found this to be exciting and welcome news for our soon-to-be
alumni. Perhaps we will see these people placed with some national construction firms in years to come."
Student Life Coordinator Dawn Vanniman lets us know that
Student Government Association Vice President Dante Dunn is
graduating with both his Associate's degree from MCC and a Bachelor's degree from Northwood. Dante was the Student Government
Association President last year. He has headed several initiatives
for SGA, such as this year's "Gold Out" at the college basketball
games. Dante plans to enroll in a Master's Program in August at
Emory University. "He's been very involved and consistently tries
to convince other students to become involved on campus," Dawn
said. "He encourages students to stay involved. It's been a pleasure
to work with Dante on SGA."
Computer Services User Support Technician Mark Higham is
now president of the Professional/Technical Union. He also received the October 2012 Kudos & Compliments award, MCC's
monthly employee recognition program.
