Food donations and cash donations are welcome, however, “Cash/check donations are a better value for the Foodbank,” according to Jennifer McDonald, executive director of Admissions & Recruitment. “Every $1 donated is equal to 9 lbs. of food, because the Foodbank purchases food in bulk at a discount,” she added. Donation boxes are located around campus in the Business, Humanities, Health Sciences and Technology division offices. Food donations will be piled in the Prahl College Center through Dec. 19. Cash and check donations can be given to Dawn Vanniman in the Student Life Office (PCC 1240) through Dec. 19. Make checks payable to: Foodbank of Eastern Michigan. The College Town Food Drive is a competition between MCC, Kettering University, UM-Flint and Baker College of Flint to collect the most food and raise the most “food” dollars (cash donations). Kettering has won the trophy five times and Baker College won it once. This year we need to bring the trophy to Bear Country! Let’s show Kettering, Baker and UM-Flint how we TURN UP THE ROAR! Commit to Fit Mott had 66 employees participate in the Fall Commit to Fit Challenge, and individuals who participated were entered into a drawing to win several prizes courtesy of the MCC Wellness Advisory Council and the President's Office. Additionally, all Commit to Fit 2014 Fall 4 Fitness Challenge participants that achieved the goal of 900 minutes of physical activity were entered into a drawing to win a prize. Jennifer McDonald and Terri Loyer each won a $50 Cash prize and Kid Fedio won a one-month membership to Insight Health & Fitness Center. d Ca m p us John Dempsey reports that students in the Fine Arts program are gaining some notoriety. Painting students Casey Carter and Ashley Simmons are the featured artists at the Good Beans Cafe, Nov. 3 to Dec. 31. Good Beans is located at 328 N Grand Traverse St., Flint. Tom Myers, painting student, is the November/December featured artist at the Flint Institute of Arts art sales and rental gallery. Mara J. Fulmer is now the Faculty Director in the CTL. (Jim Shurter has replaced Mara as Program Coordinator in Graphic Design.) Mara also successfully defended her dissertation “An Examination of the Role of the Creative Arts in Stu- Arou n dent Success in Non-Arts Fields” on Oct. 24, and completed the final requirements for her D.Ed. in Community College Leadership from Ferris State University. In addition, last Spring, she was awarded the FSU’s Faculty Distinguished Scholar-Practitioner Award for her work in the doctoral program. And if that weren’t enough - on Dec. 13, 2014 she will marry Steven James. When we come back from the Holiday break in January, there will be a new face in Health Sciences. Jennifer Walker will join the Dental Hygiene staff as a full-time instructor on Jan. 7. Smile at her when you see her around campus! Congrats to the MCC Men’s Wrestling Team for earning the highest score at the Mott Bear Open Wrestling Tournament on campus Sunday, Nov. 23. The Bears earned a score of 98.5 beating UM, GVSU, Muskegon Community College, University of Toledo, Bowling Green and six other colleges. You Gotta Have Art! The Friends of Mott Library (FOML) hosted their bi-annual Art Auction Nov. 13. More than 100 people attended the event which raised in excess of $4,000 for FOML. Raffles for two pieces of donated art brought in approximately $400, the highest total ever for the raffles. There were a number of door prizes throughout the evening donated by area business, such as The Cork on Saginaw, Luca's Chop House, The Laundry, and Crust. Two special door prizes included a Kindle Fire, won by Dolores Sharpe, and a piece of art donated by Arin Ross. Arin Ross Auction in conjunction with Marlin Art were the vendors this year. The evening was emceed by Bill Reich, president of the Friends. Proceeds from the auction purchase books for the Peggy Brown CAN DO Collection, Retiree’s Collection, Baker & Taylor fiction and non-fiction lease collection among others, in addition to sponsoring speakers and supporting building renovations. Public Safety and Lapeer Extension Center hosts Halloween Safety Program MCC Public Safety Office and the Lapeer Extension Center hosted a Halloween Safety Program Oct. 28, for 53 second graders from Chatfield Charter School and Turrill Elementary School. The party was a joint initiative between the Lapeer Extension Center (LEC) and the MCC Public Safety Office to host a community awareness event to promote Halloween Safety. Students viewed two age-appropriate safety videos and were given Halloween safety tips by Public Safety officers. They were treated to a pizza lunch and given Halloween goodie bags. The program was funded by donations from MCC Public Safety Office, Lapeer Extension Center, S&M Union Donation, Meijers, and Walmart. Get your Connection electronically - opt out of paper form by email to rebecca.gale@mcc.edu Fine Arts Gallery The Mott Community College Fine Arts Gallery in the Visual Arts and Design Center will present an exhibition of work by Kalamazoo area artist Nichole Maury titled Mixed Media Installation. Her work will be in the gallery from Nov.24 through Dec. 9. In addition Maury will give a Public Presentation about her work on Wednesday, December 3, at 1 p.m. in the Visual Arts and Design Center, room 129. These events are made possible in part by the Ballenger Trust. For the exhibition, Maury presents mixed media work that is tied to a sense of time and place as it suggests the act of mapping and recording. News from the FABLAB Sue Kellogg, president of Mello & Company, is one of the innovators using the FABLAB. The FABLAB team worked with Kellogg to create 3D CAD files, 3D printed parts and early stage materials/manufacturing considerations to produce a model of the NAWGUM. “The quality, professionalism of the students, and the impressive lab are tools my company continues to use today,” said KelMCC graduate Justin Klimeck helped create logg of working with the CAD files for the NAWGUM the FABLAB. NAWGUM (patent pending) is an all-in-one teether for babies ages zero to 24 months. It is designed to manage all areas of the mouth, and all three stages of a baby’s oral development: gumming, front and side teeth and back molars. NAWGUM has won a number of awards including: 2014 Top Choice of the Year Award by the 2014 Baby Maternity Awards Program consisting of new moms and moms-to-be; FIRST PLACE for “Best New Product” in Reader’s Favorite from Baby & Children’s Product News; a 2014 National Parenting Publications Award; winner of a 2014 Family Choice Award! MCC Women’s Softball Team Gives Back The Mott Women’s softball team completed a “Community Service Day” as part of a fundraising project. All 19 members of the upcoming 2015 softball team participated in at least one Saturday outing, and many worked on two consecutive Saturdays, working in groups of four to eight people. The athletes worked for Flint’s “Fight against Blight” project painting and repairing housing in the city, packed food for the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, passed out candy and greeted children at Crossroad Village’s Halloween celebration and painted a mural on a building on Saginaw Street.
