The Health Science Department is
excited to announce a new class this
fall
HEAL 101 Nutrition Basics For The Consumer
The Health and Science department offers many classes (PEAC) that pertain to fitness and activity in regards to improving one’s health. Although some of these classes briefly touch on nutrition, we determined there
is a need on campus for this type of class.
Nutrition Basics for the Consumer is designed to give students practical and basic knowledge of nutrition
principles and how to become an informed nutrition consumer. Students will understand how nutrition choices
can positively and/or negatively affect health. Students will learn about: nutrition basics, food labels, ingredient
lists, dining out, shopping on a budget and developing a nutrition plan.
The class instructor will be Dawn Burtnett, RDN, ACE-AHFS. As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist she
will provide the students with a great experience in the classroom that can extend to applying to daily living and
improving health.
The first class HEAL101-01 will be offered this fall on Monday and Wednesday from 12 noon to 1:55 pm
in CM2107.
*This course does not meet the requirement for the nursing program at Mott Community College.
Streamline your communications with
the new portal notification system
As part of an ongoing commitment to
customer service for students and staff the
ITS staff in collaboration with Marketing

within the Portal Announcements application. Simply login to MCC4me from the
Faculty/Staff page, choose the Portal Announcement App, choose a template/style
for the announcement, upload any related
photo(s) or You Tube video, and link to your
webpage or another URL for further details.
There is also an option to preview your
message before it is sent. There is a check
box to use to send the announcement as an email.
The message can be directed to a select audience, from faculty or students only, to all employees or all
campus. The system will generate an email using the information from your announcement. Then the appropriate area will approve the announcement for viewing and sending. Sue Ellen Hange, chemistry faculty member has great news to share
about her son William Segal who is a former MCC student. William is
graduating from the University of Chicago Law School on June 13, 2015.
William and family will be moving to the DC area at the end of the summer to take a position with a DC law firm. Sue Ellen is keeping busy in
her free time as a member of the Kearsley Park Players (part of Genesee
County Park's Theater in the Parks program). She will be acting in this
year's Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night (opening June
12) as well as in the Children's Theater production of Jack and the Bean
Stalk.
Aubrey Folts reports that Dr. Madonna Carpenter-Jackson successfully completed the oral defense of her dissertation on May 20, 2015.
Her research was titled “Nontraditional Career Technical Education Students: Does involvement in student organizations encourage retention?”
Dr. Carpenter-Jackson reports that “Overwhelmingly, nontraditional students (over age 25) reported finding and engaging with other students
who had similar interest or life circumstances made persistence a greater
likelihood. A secondary finding was undergraduates were more likely to
join a student organization if suggested to them by a professor or staff
member at the college.” Congratulations Dr. Carpenter-Jackson.
Jennifer Doerr, ASL instructor reports that she will be representing
the Michigan Interpreter Training Programs in a workgroup created by the
MDCR-DODDBHH (Michigan Division of Civil Rights-Division on
Deafness, Deaf-Blind, and Hard of Hearing). The group will provide
input to the division as they work on policies and procedures for endorsements to certification for the state.
