QUOTE OF
THE M ONTH
“Silence is one of the hardest
arguments to refute.”
--Josh Billings
At the March 25 "Day of Dialogue"
luncheon, MCC President, Dr. WalkerGriffea, led a panel discussion about issues women face; particularly, in the
workforce. Several community members (Dr. Nita Kulkarni, Dr. Inez
Brown, Mrs. Margie Shard, and Ms.
Marcia Pierce) served as panelists and
attendees engaged in meaningful and
informative dialogue. Conversation focused on supporting women at MCC
and in the community.
The national AAWCC was formed specifically "to change women’s lives through education, service and
leadership development." AAWCC has been successful in creating a network and a knowledge system to support women in leadership roles at the community college level. AAWCC is the largest affiliated council of the
American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), and is celebrating over 40 years as the leading national
organization that champions women and maximizes their potential. As President Elect of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC), Dr. Walker-Griffea has been on the forefront of advocating
for women.
Stemming from the Day of Dialogue it became clear there was interest in establishing an AAWCC chapter
at Mott Community College and an informational meeting was held to discuss what the group would look like
and draft the chapter bylaws. At a meeting on April 23 Dr. Walker-Griffea announced that the MCC chapter had
been approved by the national organization at their annual board meeting on April 21. The MCC Chapter is now
official!
Also at the April 23 meeting, the following Chapter Officers were elected:
• Madonna Carpenter-Jackson, President
Madonna.Carpenter@mcc.edu
• Lisa Poma, Secretary
Lisa.Poma@mcc.edu
• Sounya Walker, President-Elect
Sounya.Walker@mcc.edu
• Wanda Brown, Treasurer
Wanda.Brown@mcc.edu
The group will meet monthly, and membership is open to ALL MCC faculty, staff, administrators, students, and community members. The MCC Chapter will host at least two events or other activities annually.
Please contact a board officer if you would like to become a member, or get additional information. Please stay
tuned for the exciting work of this newly formed chapter. Congratulations to all who are taking the leap of faith
and service to support women at MCC and in our community!

MCC participated in a service

Heather Sisto reports the outstanding community service performed
by English 101 students which relates to Global/Civic Awareness and
Critical Thinking/Problem Solving. A total of 152 hours were volunteered
at local organizations including the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan (76),
North End Soup Kitchen (30), Harvesting Earth Educational Farm (16)
and Shelter of Flint (15). Each student completed a research paper and
power point presentation on an issue that affects the agency at which they
served. Topics included:
How does living in a "food desert" affect obesity?
How much grocery store and restaurant food waste could be redirected to
food banks, compost, or energy production?
Does domestic violence lead to homelessness?
Does lack of transportation cause the elderly to have poor nutrition?
What impact does urban farming have on the local economy and/or
environment?

Sweet treat for Children in
Need:
Kudos to students enrolled in the
MGMT-181 Principles of Management for
the winter semester at the Northern Tier
Center. They brightened the Easter Holiday
for 100 needy children in Northern Genesee County. The management course is designed to prepare students to be future
managers in the business world. They were
instructed that businesses have a responsibility to give back to the communities that
help support them economically. So, a
community service class project was designed to provide some hands-on experience to address this matter. To
better understand the responsibility of business to support the community, a class service project was developed requiring the students to assemble 100 Easter Baskets in class. Easter baskets, candy, and Easter
items were donated by the students and the local Walmart. The Easter
baskets were given to the “at-risk” child population attending Edgerton
and Garner Elementary Schools in the Clio Area School District. The
coordinators for the program stated the Easter baskets were greatly appreciated by the parents! One parent mentioned her children have not
had baskets for three years due to financial constraints.
Counseling Awareness Month in April was recognized by our fine
counseling staff with “selfies” and positive affirmations for students.
Dental Hygiene Students

Hygiene students provided several "healthy teeth" education activities for ECLC students as well as Dental Clinic tours for
their parents. Happy Teeth Week was held March 30 - April 2.
