I understand this is determined by a counselor/advisor and I should not take courses in excess of those necessary to complete my program and/or transfer. must participate in at least TWO SSS activities each semester I am enrolled at MCC. Workshops, professional tutoring, campus visits, and cultural events are all SSS activities. must meet with my coordinator for a coaching session at least once per semester. must keep my Support Services Coordinator informed of my progress, via telephone, email, or personal contact at least twice per semester (one meeting being a coaching session). must explore options as recommended by my Support Services Coordinator such as tutoring, workshops, meeting with my instructor, etc. before withdrawing from a course. must attend MCC full-time. This means taking 12* credits for the fall and winter semesters and 6* credits in the spring and summer semesters (if attending spring/summer). *Exceptions may apply. understand that if these requirements are not met, I may be dismissed from the SSS program. 4 KEYS WORKSHOPS Keep Envisioning Your Success As a member of the TRiO-SSS program, you are eligible to participate in our KEYS (Keep Envisioning Your Success) Workshops. KEYS is a series of workshops designed to support your academic and personal success. You will receive advance notice of these workshop opportunities throughout the year. KEYS workshops are presented by the TRiO-SSS program and various other departments on campus and are designed for your own personal growth as a student. Past workshop topics have included: Financial Literacy Dealing with Test Anxiety Note Taking Skills Study Skills Resume Writing & Job Seeking Skills Diversity MCC Student Code of Conduct Stress Management You will receive 150 participation points for each academic support workshop you attend and stay for the duration of the workshop (see Participation Points on page 11). Transfer ASSISTANCE SSS Coordinators can assist you with the transfer process when you are ready to move on from MCC. We help you research other colleges, assist you with selecting courses that will transfer, and connect you with admissions staff at 4year universities. We can also connect you with other TRiO-SSS programs at different colleges and universities to make the transition a smooth one. 5 Power HOUR The TRiO Power Hour is an informal lunch that happens on the first Friday of every month. The Power Hour provides TRiO students an opportunity to share resources, interact with, and discuss relevant topics with others students and TRiO staff. This is a great way to get some of your questions and concerns answered. Or, perhaps you have a specific issue you would like to raise with TRiO staff and students. Any topic is ok to talk about, for example: stress, sadness, difficulty adjusting to school, academic concerns, family problems, financial struggles, and relationship concerns. We provide lunch!! You will receive 75 participation points for attending Power Hour (see Participation Points on page 11). Coaching SESSIONS Coaching sessions are a face to face meeting with your coordinator to discuss your progress with your education. We will talk about planning for the next semester, course schedules, academic goals, career goals, transfer opportunities, etc. You are required to attend at least one coaching session per semester. You will receive 50 participation points for attending (see Participation Points on page 11). Coordinator CHAT Coordinator Chat days are designated on your event calendars on the last Tuesday of each month. Coordinator Chat is designed to connect with members on a routine basis, address any problems our members may be having, and to monitor your academic progress. Coming in to speak with a coordinator on a Coordinator Chat day will earn you 10 participation points (see Participation Points on page 11). 6 Laptop & Calculator LOAN The SSS program has laptop computers and TI-83 graphing calculators available for loan. The laptops are equipped with WIFI internet access and Microsoft software such as Word, Access, Excel, and Power Point. The laptop and calculator loan service is only available to SSS members and is free of charge. To use a SSS laptop or calculator members must: Sign the laptop agreement every time a laptop is checked out or sign the calculator agreement at the start of the semester it is being loaned for Never lend the laptop or calculator to anyone or leave it unattended at any time Provide their own storage device for saving files (i.e. flash drive) on the laptop See your coordinator for more information Computer Lab & PRINTING The TRiO SSS program has computers and printers available for use inside of the Learning Center, Room 2280 of the Prahl College Center. TRiO students can print up to 20 pages per day free of charge. Awards & RECOGNITION The TRiO-SSS program hosts an awards and recognition banquet at the end of the year, usually in the month of May. This banquet acknowledges our SSS members for their hard work, high GPA’s, and graduation; it also allows you to share your success with family members and friends. 7 University VISITS TRiO-SSS students are encouraged to attend visitations to other Michigan universities and college campuses. University visits are scheduled throughout the academic year and give members a feel for that particular campus. A typical university visit may include a tour of the campus, a visit to a typical dorm room, and lunch in the cafeteria. We also connect with the Admissions staff for a question and answer period, which allows students to ask any personal questions they may have. University visits are FREE to SSS members and details will be available on the monthly event calendars that are posted online and sent via email. Attending a university visit earns you 250 participation points (see Participation Points on page 11). Past university visits have included: University of Michigan - Flint and Ann Arbor campuses Michigan State University Wayne State University Eastern Michigan University Saginaw Valley State University Central Michigan University Oakland University Let your SSS Coordinator know if there is a particular campus that you would like to visit! 8 Cultural ENRICHMENT TRiO-SSS students (with a 2.0 or higher GPA) are invited to participate in various cultural activities, FREE of charge. The goal of cultural enrichment is to take our members “out of their comfort zone” to experience a variety of unique activities and events that they either could not or normally would not attend. Cultural activities are designed to open your eyes to the community and world around you and provide incentive to further your education! Members will receive semester newsletters and monthly calendars with details, which will be posted online and sent via email. Space is limited on most events; therefore, you must RSVP if you are interested in attending any of our cultural activities. You will earn 150 participation points for attending most cultural trips, some events may be worth more (see Participation Points on page 11). If you RSVP for a cultural activity and cannot attend, we ask that you call and cancel your reservation as soon as you know your plans have changed. If you RSVP and do not call to cancel and do not show the day of the activity, we will deduct the amount of points you would have earned had you attended. Also, you will not be allowed to attend future cultural activities. Students are also subject to the Code of Conduct while attending SSS sponsored activities. Past cultural events and activities have included: The musicals “The Color Purple,” “Wicked,” & “Mama Mia” Pistons, Tigers, Lions and Red Wings games Community volunteer service Touring the African American Museum (Detroit, MI) Touring the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park Visiting the Detroit Science Center MSU and SVSU football games The show Blue Man Group And many more! Members may also qualify for our annual Cultural Enrichment Trip. Members are invited on the trips if they meet certain qualifications; you will be made aware of the criteria during the academic year. 9 188081_5016 TRiO SSS GRANTS The TRiO-SSS Grant is designed for students participating in the SSS program. This Grant is designed to assist with education-related expenses. To apply for this Grant, students MUST: be receiving a Federal Pell Grant. maintain a cumulative minimum GPA of 2.0. have earned a minimum of 500 participation points. carry 12* credits fall and winter semester and 6* credits spring and summer semester. *Exceptions may apply abide by the “Membership Requirements” (see pg. 4). attend an SSS-sponsored financial literacy workshop. attend at least one SSS or MCC-sponsored workshop during both the fall and winter semesters. be a SSS member for one full semester before you can apply for the Grant. If you are awarded the TRiO-SSS Grant: any Grant monies received do not have to be paid back. you may apply for the Grant twice per academic year (fall and spring semesters). Grant monies will be distributed as follows: fall semester (at the end of the semester); spring semester (at the beginning of the semester). the funds will be deposited directly into the your financial aid account. Violation of these requirements or failure of a course may result in the loss of your grant and suspension of future awards/grant aid. **Applying for the TRiO-SSS Grant does not guarantee an award 10 Participation POINTS Participation points are designed to keep you involved! By taking advantage of any of the services listed in this handbook (professional tutoring, workshops, cultural events, university visits, and coordinator chat), you earn participation points. Participation points will: Show the TRiO-SSS staff how active you are in the SSS Program. Earning Participation Points will allow you to remain a member of the SSS Program. Be a determining factor in a member’s eligibility for the TRiO-SSS Grant. SSS members applying for the Grant must have earned at least 500 Participation Points to be considered for the Grant. Earn SSS members the eligibility to attend cultural enrichment activities (which include cultural events and university visits). Participation Points can be earned by: Coordinator Chats 10 points (max. 100pts) Coaching Sessions 50 points Attending professional tutoring 20 points (per session) Attending Power Hour 75 Points Attending KEYS workshops 150 points Attending university visits 250 points Attending cultural events 150 points In recognition of excellent participation, attendance, and academic success, TRiO-SSS may offer incentive rewards for students throughout the year.
