PREPARING THE APPLICATION: WHAT SHOULD I DO? Collect and organize the following information: Know everything about the award before preparing the application what is being offered and how often (one time reward/course of schooling?) candidate criteria (restrictions, special identifiers etc.) application deadlines (Earliest and Latest Deadlines) how they want it sent type and number of references (character/academic/both) Make sure you meet all the requirements: To demonstrate financial need: o Have copies of applications for financial aid available if proof o Have detailed information regarding your parent's and your financial information (may need tax returns) Collect evidence demonstrating how you meet specific criteria (i.e. Refugee status, academic standing, etc.) To demonstrate your worthiness over other candidates: o Make a list of all the accomplishments that you've had in the school and community awards, certificates, recognitions, written a play, published, created something, etc. o Make a list of all the memberships you've had in the school and community clubs, teams, activities, events, volunteerism, employment, exchange programs, etc. o For each listed experience/membership, list at least two skills you have developed that demonstrate personal growth i.e.) leadership, teamwork/interpersonal skills, problem solving, communication skills, presentation skills, organizational, time management, creativity, management, proactive behaviour/foresight, perseverance, conflict management, etc.. Organize your thoughts: Go through the list and target the key skills, character traits, accomplishments, etc., that you would like to emphasize and demonstrate how fabulous you are. Ensure you select those which highlight how you meet the criteria and shine compared to other candidates! Target your audience: Address the letter to whom it is intended. Be sure to be appropriately formal and polite. Also thank the person(s) or organization for their consideration. Use Active Language: Make sure that you describe yourself using active not passive language. For Example: Active language: I taught; I learned. I teach; I learn. Passive language: I was (have been) taught [by someone]; It was (has been) learned [by someone]. I am [being] taught [by someone]. It is [being] learned [by someone]. Keep it Simple: The letter should be no longer than a page, however DO NOT just list your skills and accomplishments, you must discuss them. Think - can you say things more succinctly and to the point? Proofread and Edit: Grammar, sentence structure and spelling errors, will not be appreciated. Make sure that you check it several times and read it aloud for clarity. Include a self addressed, stamped envelope if necessary.
