MAFIX
Lord Jesus Christ,
You gather your people during this Holy Season of Lent, and call us to repent.
As we return back to you once again, open our hearts,
Principal: C. Duke
so that we might be transformed in your image.
Assistant: M. Kivell
Remove any barriers that keep us from you,
Head Custodian:
V. Didio
so that we may live fully the life we received at Baptism.
Help us to love you more and to reach out to others in friendship,
especially to those who need it most.
May the ashes that we receive on our foreheads remind us of your call to change.
May Your Spirit give us the courage and strength we need to be people of faith
By Your grace, may we turn to you in our abundance, and share your love with the
world around us.

A Message From Our ECO Team:
March is Nutrition month. Did
you know that kids should be
eating about 5 servings of fruits and vegetables
daily? Do you know that an apple a day really
does keep the doctor away? Apples contain no
fat, sodium or cholesterol and are a good source
of fiber. The Eco Team will be busy promoting
healthy, crunchy snacks by making posters and
daily announcements. On March 10th , Mary Fix
will participate in the Great Big Crunch where all
students will bite into a delicious crunchy apple
at the same time. Earth Hour is on Saturday,
March 19. Students at Mary Fix will participate
in No Power Hour at school on
Thursday, March 24. Each class
will turn off electronics and lights
for at least 1 hour in the day.
Junior Basketball
We would like to congratulate our Jr
boys and girls basketball teams who
played an amazing season and
improved with every game. The boys battled hard to
the very end. Well done, Joseph, Tristian Matteo,
Diego, Tyler, Joao, Giulian and Andrew . The girls
made it to the playoffs, but lost by one point but
were victorious in effort and spirit. Well done Dianna,
Katrina, Rebecca, Juliana, Larysa, Maria, Sebina and
Nyomi, A special thanks to our dedicated coaches,
Mrs. Senra, Ms. Telfeyan and coach Kadeen for their
efforts. Also a special thanks to our student coaches,
Lola, Angelica and Ernesto and all of our supportive
spectators! We are now in the midst of practicing for
our girls and boys intermediate games that will run
after Holy Week. Good luck Falcons!

Junior & Intermediate Speeches
Congratulations to all Junior and Intermediate students who
participated in this year’s speech competition. Our students

of all our students for doing such a great job and for some,
getting out of their comfort zone.
Junior finalists were Natalia D, Alexander L, Madison N, Olivia G,
Kayla B, Kiera I, Abigail N, and Izabella M. Winners for the
Junior division were:
Third Place: Olivia G.

over 1052 pairs of brand new socks.
Classrooms competed against one
another to see who would raise the most.
Each class did a great job participating.
We would like to congratulate our top
three classes for their efforts and
enthusiasm to put socks on the
deserving feet of those in need. Third

collaboration with St. Martin’s culinary
team, donated nut free cookies to each
student in the school.

Developing Mindsets that Promote Growth
NEW
What do we mean by “mindset”?
Mindsets change is not about picking up a few
pointers here and there. It’s about seeing things in a
new way… changing from a “judge and be-judged”
framework to a “learn-and-help learn” framework.
– Carol S. Dweck
Tips for Fostering a Growth Mindset:
Web Resource:
(all grades)
Tip # 6. Use Failures as an Opportunity for Reflection and Growth
National Library of Virtual
Manipulatives
http://nlvm.usu.edu/
 Ask: “What can you learn from this experience? What could you
try differently next time?”
 The power of “yet” (e.g. When you think you can’t do it, remind
yourself that you can’t do it YET.”
Family Math Activity K – 3:
Big Ideas:
Shapes of different
dimensions and their
properties can be described
mathematically.
 Use shape stickers to have them make a shape
picture. Try to use as many different shapes as
you can. Describe your picture and the shapes
in it. Ask why they used those shapes.
Family Math Activities 4-6: Symmetry
 With your child, identify all the symmetrical capital
letters.
Have your child sort the capital letters
according to the number of lines of symmetry they
have.
 Go on a symmetry hunt. With your child, find shapes,
objects, patterns and designs around your home that
have lines of symmetry. (e.g. Look at wallpaper, floor
tiles, pictures and designs on packaging)
Grades 7 & 8: Continuing
the Conversation about
Financial Literacy!
Let’s discuss how “Advertising” affects our
money decisions…
Which of the following advertising
techniques do you think is the most
effective at influencing your child’s
opinion of a product or service? Do they
agree?
1. Economic Appeal – this type of ad
presents the “great deal” (e.g. unlimited
texting after 6pm). Read the fine print.
2. Comfort and Enjoyment – attempts to
present a product in relation to
something that, although enjoyable, is
largely unrelated to the product/service.
The purpose of the ad may simply have
been to get your attention.
3. Scare Technique – the ads portray awful
consequences. (e.g. smoking ads
highlighting illness, acne creams before
and after photos)
“God paid a great price for you. So don’t become slaves to anyone else.” 1Corinthians 7: 23

WORKHOP SESSIONS
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Dr. Susan Williams, Psychologist
Parent’s Guide to Reducing Stress and
Increasing Resilience in Children
Dr. Williams is currently the Director of the
Halton Centre for Cognitive Therapy and
Stress Reduction in Oakville.
She
maintained an appointment for 8 years as
Assistant Professor (PT) in the
Department
of
Psychiatry
and
Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster
University where she conducted research
on prevention and intervention with
anxious and depressed children, provided
treatment in the child, adolescent, and
adult hospital programs, and trained residents and interns in
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). She has worked on the CBT
Unit at the former Clarke Institute of Psychiatry in Toronto (now
CAMH), at the Anxiety Treatment and Research Centre at St. Joseph’s
Healthcare in Hamilton, the Mood Disorders program at the former
Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital, the Adolescent Program and Eating
Disorders Clinic at McMaster University Medical Centre, and the Child
and Family Centre at Chedoke Hospital, Hamilton.
Children who are excessively stressed or anxious can underachieve
in school, have low self-esteem, be angry, sad and lonely, have
difficulty with schoolwork and have difficult family and peer
relationships. Parents have a significant impact on how well children
respond to stress and anxiety. Therefore, it is important that we, as
parents, teach ourselves healthy ways to deal with stress and anxiety
so we can pass on this knowledge to our children. We also need to
follow some fundamental parenting principles so children learn how
to self-regulate when stressed and anxious. Healthy habits learned
in childhood promote lifelong healthy habits and a happier and more
productive life.
This presentation will describe some reasons why children are more
stressed and anxious than before and help parents develop
resilience, reduce stress, improve their child’s overall well-being and
create a happier home. The presentation will be followed by a
question and answer period.
Keynote Address
9:30 a.m. – 10:30 p.m.
11:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon

Team Up To
Promote: Winter Walk Day at Mary Fix
Winter Walk Day at Mary Fix was a huge success! This event took place
on Wednesday, February 3rd. To promote walking to school, our ECO
Team put up posters around the school and made announcements to
inform the students about what Winter Walk Day is and how walking to
school can help make a difference in our physical and mental health, as
well as to the environment. With the accompaniment of Peel Regional
Police our students walked around the block and received a healthy nut
free snack, fun tattoos and swag from Peel Police. The two top classes
were Mrs. Nucci & Mrs. Currie’s FDK class who came in second place
and Mrs. Patten’s grade 6 class who came in first. Both classes have
proudly received the golden boot trophy to display in their classrooms.
Well done students! The Mary Fix ECO Team will continue to encourage
parents, caregivers and students to walk and wheel to school daily.
Shrove Tuesday at Mary Fix
We’d like to extend a huge thank you to
all who attended our Shrove Tuesday Community
Pancake Night. It is because of the generosity of the
Mary Fix Community that we are able to host such a
wonderful event. We’d like to thank all the
volunteers that came and helped. Putting on such an
affair requires many hands behind the scenes to
organize and run; we can’t do it without you.
We’d also like to recognize the St. Martin Catholic
Secondary School Culinary Team for preparing the
pancakes. And a special thanks to the St. Martin
Drumline for not only entertaining us, but taking the
time to serve the community.
School Council is an important part of Mary Fix
Catholic School. We hope you will join us at our next
meeting April 14, 2016; our
meetings are open to all
parents. There is no
obligation to attend. Come
out and hear what is
happening in your child(s)
school. We hope to see you
there.

The Liturgical Season of Lent
Lent is always a time to reflect on our lives and
look at the needs of not only our own community,
but the Global community. We try to observe
three principles throughout Lent – personal
prayer, fasting and alms giving. Our reaching out
to others, our sharing with the less fortunate, our
prayers and good works are the best examples of
God’s love that we can share with each other.
Lenten Confessions for students in Grades 3-8
