SAVE THE DATE FOR SHREK JR The students and staff of Mary Fix have been rehearsing daily, working hard, singing, dancing and memorizing their lines. It’s going to be a great show folks! Mark your calendars as there will be two evening shows: Wednesday, May 13th and Thursday, May 14th at 6:30 pm. Hope to see you all there.! STAY TUNED…. PARENT INFORMATION EQAO Testing Is Approaching... This year’s EQAO assessments for Grade 3 and Grade 6 students will take place May 26 through June 6, 2014. Grade 3 testing will be taking place from May 25th to May 29th. Grade 6 testing will be taking place from June 1st to June 5th. Attendance at school will be very important during this time for these students. Therefore, parents/guardians are asked to refrain from arranging appointments or taking vacation days during this time. EQAO Parent Tips: EQAO can be a stressful time for some children. The intent is not meant to cause stress, so we try hard to make students feel comfortable, confident and relaxed through the testing. Here are some tips that can be helpful. Stay Positive and always celebrate your child’s success and hard work each day. Remind your child that the assessment will have questions asking them things that they have already learned in class, so not to worry. Be sure your child receive enough sleep every night so that they are rested. Continue to ensure that your child eats a healthy full breakfast and remembers to keep a positive and relaxed attitude in the home environment. Snacks will also be provided for students. Do not force your child to study for these tests. They are already working hard at school and their teacher has already been preparing them for this assessment. For additional information on Gr 3 & 6 testing, visit the EQAO website at www.eqao.com and click on “Parent Resources” Something to Remember: Although EQAO offers important information about your child’s learning, it is only one part of the puzzle. The levels achieved on EQAO will not be a part of your child’s reports card. The results of your child’s EQAO scores will be provided to each family in the fall. Kindergarten 2015-16 We continue to register kindergarten aged children. Please see the office, the Mary Fix or Board website for details. On Wednesday, May 6th at 6:30pm we will be holding our ‘Welcome to Kindergarten’ (WTK) evening. This is a fun and informative evening for new Kindergartens and their parents. Community partners, such as the YMCA before and after school program will be available at 6:00pm. Please join us with your child and receive information about the program. The safety of all our students is very important. Drop off and pick up can sometimes be a rush, but in all circumstances safety comes first. We strongly encourage you to walk, or to take advantage of our Kiss ‘n’ Ride lane in the morning from 8:45 am to 9:00am. Please drive to the end of the Kiss n’ Ride lane and drop off your child, where they will then walk on the sidewalk to the yard. PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE KISS N RIDE LANE. This lane is designated as a drop off and according to the City of Mississauga Bylaw parking in this lane is a ticket offence. Please feel free to park your car in the visitors parking lot or find a designated area to meet your child/ren to avoid the congestion. Parking in this lane or the bus lane is prohibited at any time of the day. Unfortunately some tickets have been issued for this violation. This is beyond our control and falls within the city bylaws. Your support is greatly appreciated. We will continue to sell popcorn every Wednesday. Popcorn sales have been a great success. Organization and distribution is done directly by our own students. On Thursday, March 12, everyone at school participated in the Great Big Crunch by biting into a nice juicy apple all at the same time. On Friday, March 27, we celebrated Earth Hour here at Mary Fix from 10 to 11 am. Eco reps communicated facts about energy conservation practices during morning announcements. Thank you to staff and students who continue to respect our energy conservation plan (e.g. lights out lunches, turning off monitors and smart boards when not in use) and who regularly bring reusable containers and water bottles to support out waste minimization plan. Spring is here! As the warm weather arrives, leave the car at home and walk or ride a bike to school – this is healthy for you and for the environment! WANTED! The Eco team is looking for volunteers to help with the front garden beds. If you have a green thumb and/or are willing to assist with weeding, planting, and watering the gardens, please contact the main office. With Jesus Christ joy is constantly born anew.” Easter Sunday is April 5th! God our Father, creator of all, today is the day of Easter joy. This is the morning on which the Lord appeared to men who had begun to lose their hope and opened their eyes to what the scriptures foretold: that first he must die, and then he would rise and ascend into his Father’s glorious presence. May the risen Lord breathe on our minds and open our eyes that we may know him in the breaking of the bread, and follow him in his risen life. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Thank you to all those parishioners who have made their pledges for the Archdiocesan Family of Faith Campaign. Our parish has exceeded its goal of $670,000. Volume 7 April Fractions Learning about fractions extends childrens’ understanding of our number system. While whole numbers represent quantities of whole units, fractions signify parts of whole units or parts of sets. Although fractions are all around us, learning about fractions is difficult for some children. Identifying fractions in our environments makes them meaningful and easier to visualize. Developing Mindsets that Promote Growth What do we mean by “mindset”? Mindsets are the assumptions and expectations we have for ourselves and others. These attitudes guide our behavior and influence our responses to daily events. - Dr. Robert Brooks Tips for Fostering a Growth Mindset: Tip # 3. Set appropriately high expectations and provide support. Expectations should focus on habits, effort, and growth, not grades. Provide your child with other supports (extra help, additional resources). Don’t assume that “you could do it easily if you just tried harder.” Family Math Activity K – 3: Big Ideas: A fraction shows the relationship between a part and a whole. With your child, gather several similarly shaped objects, such as a piece of paper, a towel, a placemat, a picture frame, a magazine and a book. Ask your child to show you one half of each object, perhaps by using a ruler to mark the halfway point. This is an opportunity for your child to see that fractional portions must be of equal size. Extension: Ask your child to show you one fourth of each object. Family Math Activity 4-6: Big Idea: Numbers tell us how much or how many Ask what real-life situations might these fractions describe: - Two fifths 2/5 - Three sixths 3/6 - Five eighths 5/8 For example: Five eggs have been eaten from the dozen. This Grades 7 & 8: Continuing the Conversation About Your Money Decisions! Let’s discuss some factors affecting “Money Decisions”… Ask your child to keep a log for one week of all the times, instances, or circumstances that he/she has an encounter with money (e.g., a subway ride, buying gum at a store, going to the bank or ATM, buying an app). Ask your child to make a list of all the ways in which money enters into his/her daily life. Discuss with your child his/her money encounters (e.g., what was the total value of your money encounters?) Note: Consider factors that affect money decisions: emotions, friends and peers, customs, traditions, habits, family members, latest styles and fads, advertising, incentives, and personal values. represents 5/12 of the set. Can your child describe the fraction of eggs eaten (5/12) and the remaining eggs (7/12)?
