Remembrance and Peace
Lord Jesus Christ,
Those who we remember this month are examples of your words.
“Greater Love than this no one has than to lay down one’s own life for a
friend.”
This month we remember all those who lived and died for us;

a true and Christian love of country.
Let us grow in a love for our country that consists not of following blindly,
But of working together to make it the land of goodness that it should be.
Let our patriotism be such that it will not exclude the other nations of the
world, but include them in a powerful love of country that has room for all
others too.
Amen
Principal’s Message: November is a time of remembrance. We honour and remember those who died for our freedom
and on All Saints Day and All Souls Day, we remember those who meant so much to us. May our fondest
memories of our lost loved ones bring us peace. We encourage all students to wear a poppy during this time.
It was a busy month at Mary Fix. Our junior girls and boys Volleyball team represented Mary Fix with pride as did
our Cross Country team who advanced to the Board finals. Students participated in Thanksgiving activities and
showed true school spirit during our Halloweek spirit week. Mrs. Senra’s grade 3 class organized a wonderful
Empathy virtue assembly and students were acknowledged for demonstrating acts of empathy in the month of
October. Progress reports will be going home Tuesday, November 11th with parent/teacher interviews to follow on
Thursday, November 13th. Please be sure to connect with your child(ren)’s teacher should you have any concerns.
We look forward to the month ahead as we prepare for the Christmas season, a season of giving.
God bless. Cathrine Duke—Principal
PARENT INFORMATION
Progress Reports
On Tuesday, November 11 students in Grades 1-8
will bring home a Progress Report which is designed to show a student’s development of learning skills and work habits as well as a student’s
general progress in working towards the achievement of curriculum expectations in all subjects.
The Progress report is not a formal report card and
parent /teacher/student interviews are not mandatory. A Term 1 Report card will be sent home in
February and interviews will be conducted for all
students at that time.
Mary Fix will continue to partner with the Peel Police for the
2014/15 school year. This year our NPU officers are Constable A. Keen and Constable R. Vergil-Bisaillon. NPU
(Neighborhood Police Officers) work with area schools to
maintain a presence with the youth population. They work
directly with teachers, parents and the community to ensure
that our youth are on the right path to a great future.
Constables Keen and Vergil-Bisaillon are members of 12
Division which, in partnership with the community, strives to
create a safe environment in which to live, work and learn.
In addition, Youth Education Officer, D. Craig will visit Mary
Fix throughout the year offering age appropriate programs,
such as Cyberbullying and Street-proofing to our students.
Indoor Shoes
Winter Wear
As boot weather approaches it is even more
vital that each and every student keep a pair
of shoes at school to change into before entering the classrooms and other common areas
within the school such as the gym and library.
As the colder weather begins, please ensure that
your child comes to school prepared to participate in all activities, including outdoor recess.
All children should have hats, scarves, gloves, warm coats and
boots, all labeled with their names.
Sand and dirt from outside make the the
hallways slippery and unsafe for staff and students.
Snowpants keep children dry and warm on snowy or wet winter days and are highly recommended. It is also a great idea
to keep a spare pair of socks in your child’s backpack.
Staying in for Recess
NO Dogs on School Property
For the safety of our students, parents, guardians and
staff please do not bring dogs on school property when
you are picking up or dropping off students. Thank you
for helping keep the school environment safe.
Attendance
Please call the school if your child is going to
be absent. This is vital to ensure the safety of
your child. Automated Attendance Line:
(905) 270-3140, extension 1
Please provide your child’s name, grade,
teacher name and the reason for absence.
Throughout the school year, with cold temperatures, and so
many students either recovering from, or off ill because of
colds, the flu etc., we receive numerous requests to allow
children to remain indoors during recesses. Please note
that we cannot comply, as we have neither the facilities nor
the staff to supervise these students. If your child is too ill
to go outside for recess, then he/she is too ill to be at
school. Moreover, health officials indicate that the fresh air
is good for children as long as they are dressed
appropriately.
On extremely cold days, we limit the amount of time the
students spend out of doors. We obtain our weather
information from the Environment Canada Weather
Information Line and follow Board guidelines.
PARENT INFORMATION
Are you Moving?
PED Policy
Please advise the office of any changes of address.
Address changes need to be noted in the students’
records and a new Tax form must be completed. If
you are moving outside of our boundaries, a written
request must be made for your child to remain at
Mary Fix under Flexible Boundary Consideration.
Permission for Flexible Boundaries is renewed annually and approved students must demonstrate
good punctuality and attendance.
All Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) must be kept out of
sight, turned off and not used within school premises or during school-sanctioned activities such as retreats, field trips,
sports events, etc. To prevent the loss or damage of PEDs,
we encourage students to leave them at home.
Failure to comply with this policy may result in the confiscation of the PED and/or disciplinary action as outlined in the
Catholic Code of Conduct.
Allergy Alert
We have some students with serious life-threatening
allergies to peanuts, tree nuts and associated products.
For the safety of all children it is vital that items
containing these dangerous allergens are not sent to
school. If your child is celebrating a birthday please do
not send any food treats. Alternative non-food items are
always acceptable (ie. pencils, stickers…)
If other severe allergies are identified in your child’s
classroom, you will be notified. In addition, a sign is
posted at the entrance to the classroom identifying the
allergies.

Family Math Activity
Time
Students need to learn to tell time on both analogue and
digital clocks. The world is increasingly digital but
there are still analogue clocks in use. Telling time helps
develop skills in proportional reasoning, fractions , skip
counting and understanding elapsed time. Use everyday
activities and make it
fun!
And don’t forget to turn your clocks back 1 hour on
November 3rd!
K-3
 Make it a practice to use timers as a tool to teach your child
the length of a minute or group of minutes (“You have ___
minutes to get ready for ___.”)
Grades 4-6
 Discuss with your child how much time has passed (“You started
school at 8:30 and you finished at 3. How long were you at
school today?”), or how much longer it will take (“How much
longer did it take a shower than brush your teeth?”).
Grade 7 and 8 - Free Math Tutoring!
Homework Help is more than just free tutoring Sunday to Thursday nights from 5:30 to 9:30
pm. The site offers a wide variety of resources such as videotaped lessons and interactive
tutorials. Plus students get a virtual locker to keep a record of their sessions which is great for
review before tests and end of the unit evaluations.
Register today at https://homeworkhelp.ilc.org/. All you need to register is your
student OEN number which is found on your report card.

Conscience
‘What the law requires is written on their
hearts, to which their own conscience also
bears witness. Their conflicting thoughts will
accuse or perhaps excuse them on the day,
when, according to my gospel, God through Jesus Christ, will judge the secret thoughts of all.”
Romans 2:15-16
Our Daily Prayer for November
Let us now pray for the grace and strength to be
people of conscience—people who know the
good and decent way to act, and then choose to
act that way. AMEN
NOVEMBER:THE MONTH OF THE
HOLY SOULS IN PURGATORY
The Church dedicates
the month of
November to the
remembrance of all the
holy souls in
Purgatory. As
baptized Catholics we
should be praying for
the faithful departed,
especially since our
prayers can help these
souls get to Heaven,
where they can in turn
intercede for us.
Eternal Rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual
light shine upon their face. May the souls of the faithful
departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

children. In partnership with the parish priests, school
teachers and catechists, they have the most important
role in the sacramental preparation of their children. It
is the parent’s responsibility to accompany their child as
they journey in their faith. Attendance at catechism
classes and regular Sunday Mass is mandatory in order
to receive their sacrament at the parish.
