St. Faustina School December 2015 3420 McDowell Drive Mississauga, ON L5M 6R7 Tel. 905-821-2607 Website: www.dpcdsb.org/FAUST Administrator’s Message DECEMBER Newsletter DUFFERIN-PEEL C.D.S.B. November was yet again another exciting month at St. Faustina Catholic School. We continued to be an active and vibrant school community with our sports teams enjoying much success and our school community coming together for events like our Remembrance Day Assembly, Virtue Assembly and the Public Speaking Competitions. Once again, a big thank you is extended to all the parents of our Catholic School Council and all of our parent volunteers who continue to volunteer their time in so many ways. We are blessed to have such a wonderful supportive parent community working on behalf of the students of our school. As a Catholic School Community here at St. Faustina Catholic School, we continue to gather as friends and family in prayer and fellowship. We take this opportunity to wish everyone a joyous Advent season, a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Yours in Catholic Education, A. Milanetti & E. Oliveira The Advent Path The season of Advent is upon us, a time when we plan Inside this Issue: -Catholic Education - Weather Info - FDK Registration - Social Justice Initiatives - D.P.W.Z. - CSC Information - Home and School Connections to celebrate the coming of Jesus, our Lord and Saviour. We are caught up in a multitude of tasks: buying gifts, baking treats and visiting loved ones. Some of us may have travel plans but we know what is said about the best-laid plans. There is no guarantee that our plans will ever be realized. God’s plans, however, are always fulfilled. As we joyfully await the Feast of the Nativity, let us mark our Advent path with the signs of love, acceptance, patience, caring, compassion and little acts of kindness and forgiveness. Catholic School Trustee Message From Your Catholic School Trustee Esther O’Toole I am so pleased that Marianne Mazzorato is our new Director of Education Designate. She will become our Director on January 15, 2016. As you know our current Director John Kostoff will be retiring in the New Year. John has devoted many years as a teacher, superintendent, associate director and director to DufferinPeel and so it is with much gratitude that I wish him well. Ms. Mazzorato has been a teacher, principal, superintendent, and spent a few years working with the Ministry of Education in the EQAO department. She brings to us much enthusiasm, a true belief in Catholic education and a goal to provide the best opportunities for each student. Ms. Mazzorato believes “positive relationships imbued with trust, confidence and competency increases the likelihood that Dufferin-Peel will continue to be a vibrant board as evidenced through increased student achievement and well-being, system morale and well-being, growth and leadership of everyone in the organization and the confidence of parents, our partners in Catholic education, parishes, and the public at large. Each and every child deserves our collective commitment to help them succeed in all aspects of their growth, well-being and development.” Thank you to all of our schools for the heartwarming tributes to our veterans on November 11th. We owe a great debt of gratitude to our veterans of all wars and conflicts. We are blessed to live in this great country and with the events of the last weeks we continue to value freedom and resolve to always stand for and protect that freedom. Thank you to all of our administrators and teachers for their hard work. It shows again and again and as ever, in our 2015 EQAO scores. And while we can always improve we know that we can be assured that our students are reaching the goals that have been set for and by us. Each school will continue to develop their own plans for improvement. Results can be found on our Dufferin-Peel web site. During this Advent season many of our schools will be taking part in Advent Masses, liturgies, concerts, breakfasts with Santa and many other activities. I so enjoy this time of year in our schools and I encourage you to attend one or more of these Masses and events. These touching events will bring the true meaning of Christmas to the forefront in your minds and hearts. Please consult the Dufferin-Peel web site for minutes of meetings, meeting schedules, current events, news and more. The web address is www.dpcdsb.org I wish you a happy and blessed Christmas and the very best for 2016. May God continue to bless us and to change hearts from evil to good, bringing peace to all to us. Merry Christmas! Esther & Rusty EQAO 2014-2015 RESULTS Below are the school results on the Primary and Junior EQAO Reading, Writing and Mathematics. The sale will run all day on February 4th. Parents may shop in the evening during interview night. WINTER WARNINGS-DRESSING FOR COLD WEATHER We will begin to experience cold weather and, with winter on its way, we need to prepare. It is important for students to come prepared to participate in all activities, including outdoor recess. Please ensure that your child(ren) is/are dressed appropriately for colder weather by having hats, scarves, boots and mittens or gloves. For our younger students it would be helpful if parents were to label items of clothing with their child’s name, so that each person can more easily locate his/her own clothing from the class coat rack area. Each term, many items make their way to the Lost and Found bin and are never claimed. Labeled items can be returned more easily and ‘mixed up’ items sorted out more readily. Parents are encouraged to check our lost and found bin for lost items. Please check in at the office for a visitors sticker before doing so. INDOOR/OUTDOOR SHOES In order to keep our students warm and comfortable and to help keep their workplace clean, please ensure that your child has a pair of “indoor shoes.” This will reduce the amount of dirt and mud brought indoors. It will also assist our custodial staff in keeping our school clean. INCLEMENT WEATHER, SCHOOL CLOSURES and BUS CANCELLATIONS If you During the winter months inclement weather may cause disruption to bus transportation and regular school operations. A decision to cancel school transportation and/or to close schools is usually made by 6:00 a.m. and will be announced on the following radio stations: VIRGIN RADIO FM 99.9 CHUM AM 1050 CFTR AM 680 CFNY FM 102.1 CHFI FM 98.1 CJBC (FR) AM 860 FM Q107 CBC 99.1 CTV CFNY AM 640 CFRB AM 1010 FM Z103.5 CHIN FM 100.7 CITYPULSE CANADA AM CJCL AM 590 EZ ROCK FM 97.3 FM 93.1 CHIN AM 1540 GLOBAL NEWS The message usually takes the following form: “All buses for the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board have been canceled.” This means that buses are cancelled for the entire day. Or, to indicate school closures: “The schools and offices of the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board have been closed.” Should the announcement refer to cancellation only in the COUNTY OF DUFFERIN, this does NOT affect St. Faustina School. DECEMBER 2015 Page 4 KISS ‘N’ RIDE PROGRAM Please follow these guidelines when using the Kiss and Ride program at St. Faustina: The Dos: Children are to be dropped off or picked up, using the drop off lane between the hours of 8:45 and 9:00 am and 3:30-3:45 pm. Full day Kindergarten children will be able to be picked up, using the drop off lane at 3:15 pm to alleviate volume andtraffic flow at the end of the day. If your child is not picked before 3:30 pm, you will be asked to park your car. As cars enter the school driveway, please turn right and proceed in a slow and cautious manner, around the perimeter of our parking lot. The drop off and pick up lane is directly in front of the kindergarten yard. Students are no longer dropped off or picked up in front of the school. This lane is reserved for buses only. Children are to exit the car in a safe and careful manner, with their backpacks ready to avoid a long wait time in the drop off lane-the children will be assisted by a teacher if assistance is required. Children are to exit the vehicle on the right side of the car, onto the landing, for safety purposes. Cars are to exit the driveway in a slow and cautious manner and are encouraged turn right in order to ease the flow of traffic. The Don’ts: Cars are not to enter the Kiss and Ride drop-off lane with any speed-they must proceed in a very slow and cautious manner Cars are not to stop at the entrance of the driveway and let children out-this is a very dangerous and unsafe practice. Please do not attempt to move into the drop-off lane from the drive thru lane, unless directed by a teacher. Under no circumstances are cars to access the bus lane or park in the bus lane; if you need to enter the school, please use the parking lot Do not in park in front of the school in the bus lane. Students are to be dropped off at the Kiss n’ Ride Pediculosis (Head Lice) I would like to bring to your attention a problem which occurs from time to time in each year in most schools. The problem is infestation by head lice (pediculosis). In order to control these pests, we shall follow the procedures outlined below. We request your full cooperation. If cases are found in the school, we shall inform parents/guardians and will be following up with classmates of the affected students. However, we request that you check your own children and, if you find them to be infested, we would ask that you let us know so that we may advise you on the proper treatment for them. If your children do become infested by head lice, we will ask you to keep them out of school until after they have been treated with the correct treatment solution and their hair is entirely clear of both lice and nits (eggs). There is additional information on the Peel Public Health website: http://www.peelregion.ca/health/topics/headlice/index.htm Or contact Health Line Peel at: 905-799-7700. If we all cooperate in these procedures, we may not entirely escape outbreaks, but we will be able to bring them under control quickly. COLD AND FLU SEASON As cold and flu season approaches, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board continues to be vigilant in ensuring that our schools are clean and that our school communities are educated regarding good hand hygiene and cough etiquette. These practices are promoted on an ongoing basis, but as the prevalence of colds and flu increases, our board increases the cleaning of contact surfaces, as well as reminds schools to review cold and flu prevention with students and staff. Many resources are utilized from our regional health units. Cold and flu viruses typically peak from December through February, but can start as early as October. Schedules of local Flu Clinics. are available on the Peel Health websites. Designated Parent Waiting Zone Portables It is wonderful that so many parents and guardians accompany their children to school. The Designated Parent Waiting Zone (D.P.W.Z.) is located in the gravel area just south of the portables and on the path south of the soccer field. We ask that parents and guardians drop off their children in the school yard area. If parents and guardians would like to wait until the bell rings, please wait in the D.P.W.Z. Your help and support in keeping the children safe is appreciated. SCHOOL LATE POLICY It is very important that students arrive to school on time and ready to work, as late arrivals disrupt instructional activities and classroom routines. We respectfully request that whether students walk or are driven to school, that they are at school before the bell rings at 9 am. Once the bell has rung, students who come in through the front doors must get a late slip form the front office. To assist with monitoring student’s tardiness we will be monitoring the number of times they arrive late. Students should not arrive before 8:45 a.m. since there is no Yard Supervision until that time. We thank you for your continued support. REPORTING STUDENT ABSENCES Daily attendance and punctuality are very important. Thank you to all parents who have been calling the school when your child has been absent due to an illness or an appointment. Please continue to report a student absence, to the school at 905-821-2607 and press 1 for attendance. If you are leaving a message, please Speak Clearly, indicate the date, SPELL your child’s name and indicate your child’s teacher, grade and reason for absence. W.I.T.S. St. Faustina School has continued to use the WITS program. This is a program aimed at helping students learn strategies to deal with problem situations appropriately and independently. We know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly hinge on understanding how technology works. But only a tiny fraction of us are learning computer science, and less students are studying it than a decade ago. That’s why our entire school is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 7-13). More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code. The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. Our Hour of Code is a statement that St. Faustina is ready to teach these foundational 21st century skills. To continue bringing programming activities to your students, we want to make our Hour of Code event huge. Talk about it with your family and spread the news! DECEMBER 2015 Page 7 ECOSCHOOL REPORT This is St.Faustina’s 6th year in the Ecoschool program. We have achieved a Platimum and 4 Gold Certification awards in the past 5 years. The Ecoschool program looks at four areas: energy conservation, waste minimization, ecological literacy, and school ground greening. This is a school-wide program, and together with the school community, we need to work all year to help reduce our environmental impact. Listed below are a few initiatives we are implementing this year. Monday and Friday: Car-Free/Walk to School and Makeover Mondays All students are encouraged to walk, ride a bike, or skateboard to school. During the winter months, why not buddle up and walk to school; get some exercise, fresh air and interact with your neighbours! Junior or intermediate students can grab a “picker” and bin during morning recess and help pick up litter in the schoolyard. St. Faustina’s schoolyard will be litter-free! Tuesday and Thursday: Litterless Lunch All students are encouraged to pack a lunch with 3 or more reusable containers, including a water bottle (litterless!!). All hallway drinking fountains have water-bottle filler attachments, so students can refill their water bottle easily! Please remind your child that if they don’t finish their lunch, they can re-pack it in their reusable container and take it home to eat it later---avoid uneaten lunches in the garbage and be mindful of those who less fortunate. Wednesday: Recycling Day On Wednesday afternoons, eco-reps check, record, and empty classroom recycling bins along with exciting music played over the PA system! Thursday: Litterless Lunch Thank you for your cooperation in helping St. Faustina continue to be an eco-friendly school, Platinum standard! IDLE-FREE SCHOOL ZONE Our school area is an idle free zone, just like all of the city of Mississauga. Children are particularly vulnerable to air pollution. So , if you drive your children to and from school, please turn off your engine when parked outside the school. A THANK YOU...
