NOVEMBER
Newsletter
DUFFERIN-PEEL C.D.S.B.
October was another exciting month at St. Faustina Catholic School. We continued to be beacons of faith as we provided food for the needy in our Thanksgiving Food Drive. We also continued to be an active and vibrant school community with our sports teams enjoying much success. We also witnessed the
many wonderful and creative costumes on display during Halloween dress up
day.
A big thank you is extended to all families who have donated to the school
through our Donation Fundraiser to support our school programs. This year we
have raised over $6800. Your contributions will support enhancements to the
core curriculum at St. Faustina that are identified by administration and Catholic
School Council members.
November is a month that is particularly important to us as we celebrate All
Saints Day, All Souls Day and Remembrance Day. We come together as a
Catholic Community to celebrate and show respect for those men and woman
who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Please support the Royal Canadian
Legion by buying a Poppy at the front office.
On behalf of the staff of St. Faustina Catholic School, we would like to continue
to gather as friends and family in prayer and fellowship, and we also take time
this month to remember those who sacrificed themselves so that we can enjoy
the freedom we have today. Please join us in the gymnasium on Wednesday
November 11th at 10:30 a.m. as we gather as friends and family in prayer and
fellowship.
Yours in Catholic Education,
A. Milanetti & E. Oliveira

CATHOLIC EDUCATION
The perspective of faith...
All subjects in Catholic schools (and all activities) are taught from the perspective of
faith. At its core, curriculum in any subject reveals fundamental beliefs and values
about the nature, task and specific character of the educational enterprise. It presupposes and involves a definite understanding of what it means to be human, of how to
live together, and the wisdom necessary to sustain life on this planet. Indeed, in its
broadest sense, Catholic curriculum is a worldview shaped by the Catholic conversation about life’s meaning and purpose. Education that is Catholic, analyses all truth
and knowledge (literature, history, geography, science, technology, mathematics)
through the lens of faith.

HALLOWEEN CANDY
In an effort to help our children make a difference in the world, and as part of our
school’s commitment to social justice education, we are supporting the charitable work
of Dr. Simone, founder of Canadian Food for Children Foundation. The ROCKids will
be collecting donations of wrapped Halloween candy for children in developing countries. The candy will be delivered to Dr. Simone's Warehouse in Mississauga. It is then
shipped to health facilities in Haiti and/or South America. The candy is used to stimulate the appetites of starving children which then enables them to begin eating healthier
food, like rice and beans. Please help by donating your Halloween candy. We will continue to accept donations until Friday,
November 13th. Thank you to all those students who participatMitten Tree Campaign

W.I.T.S.
St. Faustina School has continued to use the WITS program. This is a program aimed at helping students learn
strategies to deal with problem situations appropriately and independently.
Grade 7/8 Immunization Clinic
For the 2015-2016 school year, Peel Public health will offer grade 7 students the Hepatitis B and Meningococcal Meningitis vaccines
and the grade 8 girls will be offered the HPV vaccine on Tuesday November 10th.
Eden Food For Change
During the month of October the St. Faustina community raised 530 pounds of food for hungry families in our
community. Thank you very much for your continued support!
WINTER WARNINGS-DRESSING FOR COLD WEATHER
We will begin to experience cold weather and, with winter on its way, we need to prepare. It is important for students to come prepared to participate in all activities, including outdoor recess. Please ensure that your child(ren) is/are dressed appropriately for
colder weather by having hats, scarves, boots and mittens or gloves.
For our younger students it would be helpful if parents were to label items of clothing with their child’s name,
so that each person can more easily locate his/her own clothing from the class coat rack area. Each term,
many items make their way to the Lost and Found bin and are never claimed. Labeled items can be returned
more easily and ‘mixed up’ items sorted out more readily.
SAFETY AND SECURITY IN THE SCHOOL
The safety and security of all children in our care is one of our prime concerns. In the month of November St. Faustina will be practicing our lockdown procedures with our Neighborhood Policing Unit (NPU) officers.
INDOOR/OUTDOOR SHOES
In order to keep our students warm and comfortable and to help keep their workplace clean, please ensure that your child has a pair
of “indoor shoes.” This will reduce the amount of dirt and mud brought indoors. It will also assist our custodial staff in keeping our
school clean.

COLD AND FLU SEASON
As cold and flu season approaches, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board continues to be vigilant in ensuring that our
schools are clean and that our school communities are educated regarding good hand hygiene and cough etiquette. These practices
are promoted on an ongoing basis, but as the prevalence of colds and flu increases, our board increases the cleaning of contact surfaces, as well as reminds schools to review cold and flu prevention with students and staff. Many resources are utilized from our regional health units. A reminder, as well, that communicable diseases can be contracted in public places throughout the year. For example, cold-related viruses, such as Enterovirus, are transferred from person to person through hand contact. Cold and flu viruses
typically peak from December through February, but can start as early as October.

ECOSCHOOL REPORT
This is St.Faustina’s 6th year in the Ecoschool program. We have achieved a Platimum and 4 Gold Certification awards in the past 5
years. The Ecoschool program looks at four areas: energy conservation, waste minimization, ecological literacy, and school ground
greening. This is a school-wide program, and together with the school community, we need to work all year to help reduce our environmental impact. Listed below are a few initiatives we are implementing this year.
Monday and Friday: Car-Free/Walk to School and Makeover Mondays
All students are encouraged to walk, ride a bike, or skateboard to school. During the winter months, why not buddle up and walk to
school; get some exercise, fresh air and interact with your neighbours!
Junior or intermediate students can grab a “picker” and bin during morning recess and help pick up litter in the schoolyard. St. Faustina’s schoolyard will be litter-free!
Tuesday and Thursday: Litterless Lunch
All students are encouraged to pack a lunch with 3 or more reusable containers, including a water bottle (litterless!!). All hallway
drinking fountains have water-bottle filler attachments, so students can refill their water bottle easily! Please remind your child that
if they don’t finish their lunch, they can re-pack it in their reusable container and take it home to eat it later---avoid uneaten
lunches in the garbage and be mindful of those who less fortunate.
Wednesday: Recycling Day
On Wednesday afternoons, eco-reps check, record, and empty classroom recycling bins along with exciting
music played over the PA system!
Thursday: Litterless Lunch
Thank you for your cooperation in helping St. Faustina continue to be an eco-friendly school, Platinum standard!
