1. AREA REPORTS/REQUESTS/QUESTIONS
Students – Student Reps
No Report
Faculty – Faculty Reps
Deborah Stephens reported that on 3-22-16 the system was down for at least fifteen minutes. Nancy
Wheat brought up the wireless access on campus. Paul Chen, Technology Specialist, reported out that
we are currently testing new wireless access points with a sample of 100 laptops. If we like the results,
we can purchase the new access points. We have 10 access points on trial for testing.
Update on the Science Bldg. -- we don’t know all the details on the wireless and camera models; there
are sub-contractors working on the building who specify the models. The move-in date is August 14th,
giving staff and faculty two weeks to move into offices. Not sure about which equipment is being
moved/replaced yet. May not have enough budget for equipment. Ann Wright said that there has
been no communication to faculty of what is necessary for the move. Dave Phillips will mention it to
Joseph Reyes regarding the connection with faculty. Change order for quotes are expensive. Dave
Phillips has scheduled a “walk through tour” of the Science Bldg. for the next meeting on April 27,
2016.

2. INFORMATION/DISCUSSION/PRESENTATIONS
1. Tech Minute – Rise of the Machines
Creating Artificial Intelligence will eventually take over jobs in the retail, fast food, and
service industries, leading to widespread unemployment. Marshall Brain, Robotics Nation –
predicts there is going to be a big problem finding non-skilled jobs. Examples are using
Artificial Intelligence machines for reception, robots taking product orders, and robotic
delivery trucks. Ann Wright says the conversation has been going on for a long time on
things that AI and robots are doing. The group watched a video “Dive into the Uncanny
Valley with Boston Dynamics Newest Bipedal Robot”.
A book titled “The 4th Industrial Revolution” talks about having robots designing circuits,
creating websites and other tasks encroaching on skilled labor. In China, a company has
created an “army” of robotic noodle makers that have already displaced thousands of
human noodle cutters. Making robots that resemble humans is a goal of many robot
designers.
2. Computer Replacement Plan
We have an updated computer replacement plan for the campus labs. The plan revealed
that we have some computers that are 11 years old, many that are 8 years old, and the
majority is 3 to 5 years old. We are planning to upgrade three of the oldest labs
immediately after the end of the spring 2016 semester.

ITR is working on a computer image to replace approximately 180 computers in those
three labs on all three campuses. Our current replacement plan is a five year cycle of
replacing around 3,000 computers. Since not all years get funded, this means that some
computers will be always be at least five years old. ITR would like to move to a three-year
cycle to keep the computers more current. ITR is working on creating a plan for for staff
computers.
3. Camera Infrastructure Merging
The Honeywell camera system has been a problem, with equipment being down
sometimes for 5-10 days. Both the Alisal campus and the Library have had issues. We are
looking at costs of upgrading the camera system to Milestone software. The software cost
is at least $7,000 a year for maintenance/license with hardware at least $32,000. Dave
Phillips said that making that kind of investment is worth it and we need to do it. We have
been lucky that we’ve been able to provide security with footage when needed so far, but
there is a danger of missing important footage is the cameras are unavailable.
Questions from Renata Funk came up about using First Alarm in King City for additional
camera security, and asked if we should place an item in our PPA’s. Surveillance is
increasing in the King City by the local government, should we coordinate with the city and
tie in with their architecture? It was expressed that we lack the manpower and funding for
such a task.
4. Wireless Authentication – All
Steve Otero said that the testing of the new access points will reveal how many can
connect at one time. Authentication was discussed, and the group recommended that we
create a new, authenticated wireless network, but also leave the old unauthenticated
network in place as an alternative. The old system would be slower than and not as
capable as the new system. The group made the following recommendations:
How many devices to authenticate?
3 per user
How long does authentication last?
1 semester for students and adjunct faculty
1 year for permanent faculty and staff.
Will there be guest access on the new network?
Yes – guest access will be accommodated with a one-day pass.
ITR will work on building these recommendations into the new system being proposed.
