Message from the President
Hello Colleagues:
I wish I had better news from Sacramento, but as of this writing, we remain in budget
limbo. No decision regarding a June vote on the extension of the current tax levels has
been reached. We are optimistic that the voters will have the opportunity to speak.
I participated in a Community College League of California informational meeting at
Assemblymember Paul Cook’s office in Yucaipa on Friday, joined by CCLC President Scott
Lay, SBVC President Daniels, Trustee Futch, Student Trustee Shedd, and Board Vice President Singer, as well
as presidents, faculty, students and trustees of Mt. San Jacinto, Chaffey, Columbia and other schools. We
appreciate the Assemblymember’s staff’s willingness to listen to the CCC position on budget issues.
My thanks to the campus community for their consideration and patience while the work is commencing on
the parking lots. I also want to send my kudos for the continuing hard work being done by the Program Review, Planning and Accreditation Committees— a clear indication of the sustainability of our commitment to
those processes.
The Foundation Dinner Gala & Auction is going to be a terrific event again this year. I hope to see everyone
there! What a great way to help support our students and campus events.
Congratulations!

On February 10, Crafton Hills College CTE programs participated in the Yuciapa High School Career
Education/Technology Career Fair. We were well represented! Shown above right are Rebecca Orta
(Student Service) and Dan Word (Paramedic Program Director) and above left, second year CHC
radiological technology students, Damara Zepeda and Stephanie Feldhaus answer student questions.
CHC participated in the 2010 Emergency Preparedness Expo
at the Yucaipa Community Center, Sept. 30th. The CHC booth
was staffed by Professor Gary Reese and students. The
booth provided an opportunity to share the career and technical education programs offered at Crafton Hills College. Students spoke to approximately 100 individuals handing out
course schedules, calendars and answering many questions
pertaining to the courses being offered. During the expo students offered the service of taking blood pressures.

CHC Takes First Place in the Sputum Bowl!
CHC Respiratory Care Students took first place at the 56th Annual AARC Convention National Sputum Bowl Competition. Second place went to Maryland-DC, and Michigan and Ohio tied for third.
Alfiya Shagiakhmetova, Ryan Rives, Colin Day and Megan Robinson, representing California, went
undefeated in answering questions for three days in front of hundreds of supporters. This is no
small victory for these students who graduated as Registry Eligible Therapists in December. A noteworthy accomplishment, Instructor Michael Sheahan took the lead in coaching this team to victory.
The annual Sputum Bowl is a
knowledge contest during which
two teams at a time square-off
against each other. Team members
listen to a question read verbally
and the team that buzzes in first
has 10 seconds to answer correctly
and score a point. At the end of 10
minutes the team with the most
points wins and moves on to battle
another opponent.

Live Burn
at the SBRETC
A live fire burn training to meet Federal Aviation Administration part 139 requirements for
aircraft rescue and firefighting took place on March 3 at the San Bernardino Regional Emergency
Training Center (SBRETC). Approximately 50 community members and representatives of the media attended. Firefighters involved in the event came from New York, Oakland, Imperial County,
Riverside Co., San Mateo Co., and Los Angeles.
The SBRETC is a state-of-art aircraft rescue and firefighting training facility that trains fire
professionals domestically and internationally, utilizing the latest in curriculum and equipment,
setting the standard in Aircraft and Rescue Firefighting.
The March 3 training included pit fires - truck and hand line operations, and specialized
aircraft fire trainer (SAFT) fires encompassing wheel, engine, interior, cockpit, electrical hazard
and cargo.
Firefighters worldwide use the $12 million aircraft rescue and firefighting facility for the
purpose of training fire fighting personnel nationwide in the proper tactics for fighting aircraft
fires and proper rescue techniques for such emergencies.
The Federal Aviation Administration funded the construction of the facility. The San Bernardino Emergency Training Center is a Joint Powers Authority (JPA), which is comprised of the
San Bernardino Community College District/ Crafton Hills College, the County of San Bernardino
Fire Department, and the City of San Bernardino Fire Department.
More SBRETC News
The San Bernardino Regional Emergency Training Center had an exhibitor booth at the national
conference for the Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Working Group (ARFFWG). The non-profit international organization is dedicated to the sharing of information between airport firefighters, municipal fire departments, and all others concerned with aircraft fire fighting. The conference was
packed with industry related seminars presented by experts from around the world. Attending the
conference were Dean June Yamamoto and Captains Alan
Duggan, Curt Parker and Jeff English.
The SBRETC was recently awarded the proposal for the
Phoenix Airport Rescue Firefighter (ARFF) training. This will
generate $107,100 income to train the City of Phoenix Fire
Department FAA Part 139 live fire training for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting personnel.
