Department of Public Safety MOTT COMMUNITY COLLEGE August 2010 Preparing for a New Academic Year It is with great excitement that the Department of Public Safety anticipates the new academic year. It’s an anticipated rejuvenation that takes place every year and this year is no exception. So what do we do to ready ourselves for the rebirth? Your Department of Public Safety works with experts within our own department and from around the county to enhance our skills. We train and retrain on CPR and first aid. We practice vehicle unlocks to ensure equipment familiarity and train on different vehicles, including hybrids! Our officers reorient themselves with the usage of a fire extinguisher and elevator rescues. Federal and state laws are ever changing. We study new laws and educate ourselves on evolving laws. We review booking processes for misdemeanor, felony and juvenile arrests. Drug recognition, domestic violence and active shooter training are also reviewed. Call Us Anytime! • EMERGENCY 762-5666 • NON-EMERGENCY 762-0222 • CAMPUS CLOSING 232-8989 We invest 10 minutes at every roll call to quick reviews of procedures. Court Street Village Apartment Fire Drill The Court Street Village Apartments have 256 apartments available to seniors age 55 and over. The residency is geared toward those with an income level at or below $24,000. As a part of our one mile radius and community policing philosophy, we assist the seniors with their yearly fire drill. We follow the drill with senior safety information such as signs of a heart attack or stroke, how to speak out against elder abuse and how to use a fire extinguisher. We ended the afternoon with a picnic style lunch of grilled hot dogs, chips, spaghetti salad and lemonade! Our officers served and visited with the residents and answered questions one-on-one. It was a beautiful to enjoy the fellowship of our neighbors! The way to become truly useful is to seek the best that other brains have to offer. - Gordon Dean
