Do you have this number in your phone yet? Take a moment now to add it to your contacts. You just don’t know when you’ll need it. Perhaps you’ll be walking across campus to a meeting or a class and see suspicious behavior that you’d like to report. Maybe you’ve taken the stairs a bit too fast, landed on your knees and need medical attention. Perhaps your vehicle has decided it is not going to cooperate with you today and just won’t start. For all these situations you may not be around your computer where you can check online for the phone number to the Department of Public Safety. If it’s programmed into your phone then you’re just one call away from the assistance you may need. Have you done it yet? It takes less than a minute, right? Among our smiling faces and greetings of “How are you today?” lurks the dark side. As you enjoy this wonderful environment, please remember to be vigilant about your safety and securing personal belongings. Thieves are brazen and will approach you without warning, enter your office without invitation and help themselves to your life without your consent. Be aware of your surroundings, report suspicious behavior and secure your belongings. Secure it, if you don't want to lose it. Vis it do1 thin g.co m tod ay! “Even my 4 year old knows where to find me if we were to get separated.” -Cooper’s Mom .E. C . I In of e s Ca y enc g r e Em Choose one of the following things to do this month to become better prepared: °Have a phone with a cord and a car charger for your cell phone standing by in case of a power failure. If you have a landline then have at least one phone with a cord. (Cordless phones need electricity.) If you do not have a landline or your cell phone is your only phone then keep a car charger for your cell phone in your vehicle. Also, remember that text messages may go through even when a cell phone call may not. Add texting to your plan and be sure each family member knows how to send and receive messages. °Develop a plan for how your family will stay in touch during a disaster. Make a call list of family members and those that can offer help such as caregivers. Include a family member from outside of your local area. This family member could be your main contact for all family members since it is not likely that they will be affected by the same disaster and because long distance circuits may not be as overloaded as local circuits. °Become familiar with The American Red Cross Safe and Well program at www.safeandwell.org. Include this website address in your plan, letting all family members know how it works. There are two functions to the website: “List myself as safe and well” and “Search registrants”. °Program In Case of Emergency (ICE) numbers into all family cell phones. Create a new contact in your cell phone with the name of ICE. Enter the phone numbers for the person you would like to have first responders or hospital staff contact in the event of a medical emergency for which you cannot provide that information yourself. “Today we have more ways to speak with one another than ever before. We are used to staying in touch with cell phones, internet and email but disasters can change things.” Develop a plan today.
