Success is a Lifestyle   

 Success is a Lifestyle
2012 has arrived and,
with a New Year, individuals look for a fresh
start. Like a re-birth,
many hope to remove
bad habits and cloak
themselves in a new
and bright wardrobe
that is replete with
opportunities for
success and
improvement.
However, as the year
takes hold, most people find the transformation from the old comfortable self
to a new better self to be a task that is
as challenging and illusive as congress
submitting a balanced budget.
As Site Manager for the NTC of Mott
Community College, I cannot provide
you with a simple solution for ongoing
success. I do think it is important to
outline some basic foundations that will
help
you
both
as
students,
employees, and individuals to have
better control and direction of your own
success.
Success is a Lifestyle
 Setting successful habits is a “way
of life” that is built and established
over time and not a resolution that
one writes down at the beginning of a
new year. Most success comes from
long term commitments and not short
term proclamations.
 Set Goals that are important to you
and your life. Know the reason for
each goal and believe in its value.
You are more likely to stick with a goal
if you value reason for achieving the
end result.
 Do not be afraid to Fail…it is the
most important ingredient in success.
A positive failure is doing your best at
something without the desired results.
It means you did your best, learned
from the experience, and are better
prepared for additional opportunities.
A negative failure occurs when you do
not try or learn from your experience. It
is what you do and how you conduct
yourself during the failure that creates
future success. Thomas Edison failed
over 1,000 times before finding a material that would illuminate the light
bulb. Look at positive failures as steps
on the road of success.
 Prepare
for the expected and
unexpected. If everything went as
planned life would be so much easier.
We cannot always change or alter
things that are out of our control but
we can prepare and plan for some of
these obstacles. Let us use taking a
class at MCC as an example. Below
are habits to help college students be
more successful.
 Introduce yourself to the
instructor and observe their
personality, teaching style, and
class requirements. Go to their
office hours, talk to the professor
after class, and email questions
about things you do not understand. In the best case, they forge
a two-way relationship with the
professor.
 Make a friend in class. You can
help each other if you miss a
lecture or need help understanding
a concept.
 Understand the class
syllabus which provides
grading, testing and
assignment information. Try to
read ahead if possible and plan for
activities in your life that may
interfere with your class
assignments. Planning and
anticipating those things will
enable you to do your work before
it is due or work with the instructor
for a solution.
 Attend Class…higher grades are
directly correlated to high
attendance.
 Sit in front or as close to the
instructor as possible. Listen
and engage your mind within the
topic of the lecture. Actively try to
understand the information being
presented.
 Schedule study time. Plan
ahead so your study time can be
schedule just like a job or activity.
Do not just think study time will
happen.
 Get involved within the college.
Campus clubs and groups bring
similar people together to share
activities. These will build both
friendships and provide possible
networking connections for the
future.
 Set Priorities, college is a
balancing act between going to
classes, doing the homework,
having a social life, and, for many
students, holding down a
job. Actions speak loader than
words …your priorities will be
articulated by how much time is
spent on each activity.
 Control your emotions and look
for solutions. You may do poorly
on an assignment or disagree with
your professor. Be professional
and approach any problem with a
positive attitude. Do not blame the
instructor but ask for assistance,
how to improve, or ways to
improve the situation.

1 ConƟnuaƟon of Life is a Success

Do not be afraid to seek assistance. Establish
a support group in life and for important activities.
Everyone has limitations but recognizing them
and finding help is the best way to overcome.
The college has some amazing resources for
students success that include:
 Math Empowerment Zone: Free math help
for any student in any math class provided by
MCC instructors. Gorman Center
 Writing Center: Any student with any writing
assignment can get help by MCC English
instructors. They will critique and assist you
with your assignment. Curtice Mott Building
I hope that each of you will have a
wonderful and productive semester and
year. Feel free to stop by and meet me
and my staff. We are always eager to
help. Each student continues their
success at MCC and the Northern Tier
Center.

years of Law Enforcement experience. He recently
retired from the Flint Police Department in April 2011.

Community College for 3 years, since November 2010.

6 Winter Driving Tips
As winter weather hits much of
the country it’s important to keep
in mind the challenges and
potential dangers of slicksurface driving. Here are a few
things to keep in mind this winter:
Officer Gatica has been with the Mott Community
College since September 2010 where he was
assigned to work at the Southern Lakes Branch
Center. He was recently assigned to work at the
Northern Tier Center winter semester 2012.
1.) Be sure you’ve refreshed
yourself on the dos and don’ts of
skid control and take the time to
be cautious even in parking lots.
You may fully believe that you
can easily handle a skid but
when the slick hits the fan, so to
speak, you’ll want to be very
sure your reflexive response is
quick and appropriate.
Their work schedules are (Monday-Friday) 7:30 am3:30 pm and 3:00 pm - 9:30 pm and his office is
located in Room 109 across the hall of the Computer
Lab.
2.) Remember the reality of
reduced traction during snowy,
slippery weather and stay alert
for sharp turns and curvy roads.
Migel Gatica, is a certified police officer with 24 years
of Law Enforcement experience. He retired from the
Flint Police Department in June 2009.
If you have any questions or issues please, feel free
to contact us at (810) 232-4339 or Room 109.
4.) How’s the tread on your
tires? And also check your
wiper blades.
5.) Remember that snow banks
are tempting for sledding kids.
If you see a pack of minilugers, don’t assume that they’ll
be smart enough to avoid taking the street side route down
the pile that could send them
right into your path.
6.) Don’t assume that other
drivers are prepared to deal
with slippery road surfaces
appropriately. They very likely
aren’t...you’ve
seen
the
accidents! Keep your distance
as much as possible when
driving gets slick.
3.) Don’t assume that you’ll be
able to stop within a normal
distance when approaching that
stop sign. Plan ahead and test
your braking ability in slippery
weather, well before the stop
sign.
