November & December, 2013 Thomas Saelens The holiday season is one of
thanksgiving, warm festivities,
family, friends, and unfortunately
sometimes stress. As a staff,
everyone at the Northern Tier
Center wants to help display a
spirit that highlights the wonder
and delight of this time of year.
NTC instructors, counselors and
staff can reach out and help you
with many things, both on the
academic side and sometimes on
the more personal side. As the
Site Director at the Northern Tier,
I want to help each student be
successful in life and in the
classroom. I may not have the
answer to every question but my staff and I enjoy
helping…so do not hesitate to ask.
I want to share some tips on how MCC students can
reduce stress. If you are taking classes in the Winter
semester, PLEASE register before the MCC closes
for the holiday. December 20, 2013 is the last day MCC
is open. All MCC locations will re-open on January 2,
2014. By registering before the break you relieve yourself of the pressure of worrying about classes during the
holidays. Registering early also helps the college keep
more class sections open.
Below you will find suggestions for both our college
transition and one for making your holiday less stressful.
Semester Transition Tips
Winter Semester 2014 begins on Sat. January 11, 2014

Register for classes before the MCC Holiday Break.
The college will be closed from December 21, 2013January 1, 2014. We re-open on Jan. 2nd .

NTC Early Registration Prizes: Anyone Registered for
any NTC classes by or before 4:00 pm 12/20/2013 will
be in the drawing for one of four prizes.

$100 bookstore Gift Card, MCC Sweatshirt,
Restaurant Gift Card, MCC Shirt.

Winter means difficult weather and this is a great time
to take classes close to home. Review your class schedule to reduce your drive time for winter. Most general
classes can be taken at the NTC/Clio site. See if NTC in
Clio has classes that you need!

Qualified students may register on-line or in person
at any campus location. NTC and all campus locations will have Counseling hours to assist students with
registration before and after the holiday break.

Make sure to check your financial aid status.
December 16, 2013 is the payment deadline date.
Students can register after this date but must secure a
payment option at the time of registration. A MCC
payment plan can secure your classes if your Financial
Aid is being processed.
I have also provided a small incentive for those
registering early. Anyone that registers by 4:00pm,
Dec. 20, 2013 for any NTC classes will be part of the If you need to drop a class for Fall semester, make sure you

What should I do if someone has
stolen or scammed my personal
information or identification
documents?
ello,
I am Officer John F. Keahey; I’ve been a
police officer for nearly 26 years and retired from
the Flint Police Department in May of 2009. During
my career I’ve worked in many different areas of
Law Enforcement including: Special Operations
Bureau, FBI Safe Streets Task Force, Investigations (Internal Affairs), and Interim Chief of Police.
After a VERY SHORT retirement I started working
for Mott Public Safety in September of 2009. I’ve
spent the last few years working at Main Campus,
Work Force Development Center and with high
school students as the School Resource Officer for
Mott Middle College. I really enjoy working here at
Mott Community College and consider myself very
fortunate to have met so many wonderful people
the past few years.
If your information or identification
documents were stolen or
scammed, you have an opportunity
to prevent the misuse of that
information if you can take action
quickly.

For financial account information such as credit card or
bank account information: Close those accounts
immediately. When you open new ones, place
passwords on these accounts. Avoid using your
mother's maiden name, your birth date, the last four
digits of your SSN or your phone number, or a
series of consecutive numbers.

For SSNs call the toll-free fraud number of any one of
the three major credit bureaus and place a fraud alert
on your credit reports. This can help prevent an identity
thief from opening new credit accounts in your name.

To replace a SSN card call the Social Security
Administration at 1-800-772-1213 to get a replacement.
Migel Gatica, is a certified police officer with 24
years of Law Enforcement experience. He retired
from the Flint Police Department in June 2009.
Officer Gatica has been with the Mott Community
College since September 2010 where he was
assigned to work at the Southern Lakes Branch
Center. He was assigned to work at the Northern
Tier Center winter semester 2012.
Their work schedules are (Monday-Friday) 7:30 am
-3:30 pm and 3:00 pm - 9:30 pm and his office is
located in Room 109 across the hall of the Computer Lab.
If you have any questions or issues please, feel
free to contact us at (810) 232-4339 or Room 109.
Come By To See ‐ NTC Police Officers!!! OFFICE HOURS: Monday - Thursday
7:30 AM - 9:30 PM
Friday
7:30 AM - 4:00 PM
For driver's license or other identification documents
contact the issuing agency. Follow their procedures to
place fraud flags and to get replacements.
Once you have taken these precautions, there really isn't
anything more you need to do except to check for the signs
that your information is being misused. You don't have to
file an identity theft report with the police until you find out if
your information is actually being misused. If another crime
was committed, such as theft of your purse or wallet or your
house or car was broken into, report that crime to the
police.

(810) 232‐4339 9 Curriculum Changes In MATH In order to provide different math alternatives for
students based in their program of study, the
Math Department has developed pathways of
courses. Students should ALWAYS consult with
an advisor or that they take the appropriate
courses for their degree.
The following examples demonstrate potential
options with the new curriculum:
If you are planning to transfer to a four year
institution studying is the STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, Math) fields, you will
likely need College need College Algebra - Math
-130. If you do not place into College Algebra,
the classes leading to it include Intermediate
Algebra - Math-120, Beginning Algebra Math-082 and Basic Mathematics - Math-021.
If you are planning to transfer to a four year
institution studying in non-STEM or liberal
arts fields,
A math option would be to take Probability
and Statistics - Math-150. If you do not place
into Statistics, the classes leading to include
Intermediate Algebra and Statistics Math-115, Applications Based Mathematics Math-072, and Basic Mathematics Math-021.
If you are working on a technical degree
(please review your program requirements),
you may choose Technical Mathematics Math-128. If you do not place into this class,
the classes leading to it include Beginning
Algebra - Math-082, and Basic Mathematics Math-021.
Math Requirements for General Educa on In order to meet the general education requirements for MCC in math, you
must complete a 100 level math course or place into MATH-120 or higher.
Beginning Algebra is no longer a 100 level course as of July 1, 2012.
10 Curriculum Changes In Reading As part of our on-going commitment to student
success, all MCC courses now have a reading
prerequisite. If you place into READ 016 or READ
030, please do not put off taking this course. You will
be able to register for other courses, but depending on
your field of study, courses may be limited until you
complete the Reading class successfully.
Contact an advisor for assistance. Accelerated
classes listed below may be a good option for you.
New ways to accelerate your completion of
Reading & Writing requirements.
Two Different Options - See descriptions below
and discuss them with your Advisor
Academic Literacy
ACLT (Academic Literacy) integrated reading and writing into a single courses to provide a strong
foundation for college success. Students who
successfully complete ACLT-075 or 076 will be
prepared to enter ENGL-101 and courses that require
college level reading.
ACLT-075 requires Placement into ENGL-098 or
above and Reading 016 or above.
Themes:
ACLT-075-01 21st-Century Controversies 
ACLT-075-02 The American Dream  ACLT-075-03
Careers
ACLT-076 requires placement into ENGL-099 and
RDNG-030. Theme: Strategies for College Success.
The Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) allows
students to enroll in ENGL-099-ALP, which is
paired with an ENGL-101 section that meets on
the same days with the same instructor. Students
must enroll in both ENGL-099 ALP and its required
and specifically designated ENGL-101 section. To
be eligible to enroll in these course, students must:

Have been recommended for ENGL-099
based on the MCC Placement test OR

Have successfully completed either
ENGL-095 or ENGL-098, with a score of S9
Students meeting one of the above criteria can
choose to enroll in an ENGL-099-ALP section that
will support the work done in ENGL-101 in a
smaller, personalized learning environment. This
accelerated format allows students to complete
the necessary development course (ENGL-099)
while at the same time earning credit for
ENGL-101,which is required for graduation.
Winter semester ENGL-099-ALP sections:
ENGL-099-ALP04  ENGL-099-ALP14 
ENGL-099-ALP30
Note: These are accelerated classes and
require a student’s commitment to working at
a faster pace than traditional courses.
