Thomas Saelens, Site Manager I would like to take this time to welcome each of you to our Spring Semester at the Northern Tier Center of Mott Community College. Spring and Summer semesters are very helpful for students if they stay focused. Most classes during Spring and Summer only last 7.5 weeks versus the 15 weeks for the Fall and Winter semesters. The Spring and Summer semesters are accelerated where you can complete classes very fast, but you can also fall behind very fast. As the Site Manager, my staff and I are eager to assist with any issues or services you may need. I am proud of the NTC location and we hope you will look for classes to take in the Summer and Fall at NTC. Remember: Summer and Fall semester registration is currently open. Visit with a counselor, Advisor or myself if you need help choosing classes. You can register for Summer or Fall without any payment or FAFSA completion required, but remember you should file your FAFSA as soon as possible to secure your funds. File your 2014-15 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) as soon as you have your 2013 income information available. This new financial aid will be used for Summer & Fall semesters of 2014. Completing the FAFSA form early is your best chance to maximize your financial aid award and limit any obstacles. I would like to offer some advice for success during the Spring and Summer: Read your course syllabus. This helps you understand what is expected, how grades are determined, when assignments are due, and if assignments can be made up when missed. Attend every class…missing one class can have a major impact on your grade and success rate. Introduce yourself to your instructor. Communicate with them on a regular basis if you need help. Do not wait until the last minute and expect the instructor to solve five weeks of issues in one hour. Make a friend in class. They can help you keep focused and on track. If you don’t understand the material, two brains can be better than one. Keep on top of your material and try not to fall behind. It is better to read ahead and stay one step ahead of the instructor in case you do run into unexpected problems. I hope to see you continue your success at MCC and the Northern Tier Center. Thank you for making our site a success in the community. If not, check the telephone directory for local emergency numbers. Post the numbers near the telephone, clearly visible to children. Posting numbers of neighbors or relatives is not only important to your child but also responding emergency personnel in case you are unable to speak. Prepare a family plan and discuss what your child should do in case of an emergency. Even very young children can learn how and when to call for emergency assistance. Spring brings the potholes season. Hitting one can be both dangerous and expensive for motorists, and locating them all can be expensive for us. So, when motorists report a pothole, they save us money, and we will fix it fast, saving motorist money.” NTC Police Officers!!!
