Thomas Saelens, Site Manager
Welcome to MCC’s Northern Tier Center. My name is
Thomas Saelens, I am the Site Director for NTC-Clio.
With almost 20 years helping students at the college
level I am always eager to make your time at MCC
successful and enjoyable. I want to wish all the
students, instructors, and staff a wonderful fall
semester. Feel free to stop by my office if you need
anything, have something to share, or just want to say hi.
Remember that no person is perfect but each person is valuable in a
different way. Each person can impact the world through their
interactions and life is only as beautiful and bright as the care and warmth
we show to each other. Each of you will face challenges and I want to
urge you to utilize the staff and instructors at MCC as well as your fellow
students as a resources. As a college community we are only as strong
as the bond we build to help one another. Be generous and gracious with
your time and others with be generous to you. It is a circle of giving that
creates the ability for us, as human beings, to be motivated by more than
just personal gain or wealth. Real wealth comes from making the world a
better place and by helping others to become better people and citizens.
Real wealth does not have dollars signs because it is measured in the
Smiles we make, the Appreciation we instill, the Inspiration we
create and the Laughter we share. You are a boat on the ocean of life…

Make a friend in every class. If you miss a class
or need help, you then have a resource.
Networking and creating new personal avenues is
a skill that can benefit you throughout your life.
If you find yourself struggling in class, seek help
from the instructor as soon as possible.
Instructors want you to be successful.
If you see someone in need or struggling, ask if
they need assistance. You may be the difference
they need. A mountain is climbed with many
steps…do not be afraid to step forward for help
and help another with their next step.
If you need tutoring or want to join a study group,
stop by the NTC front desk for information.
The college has some amazing resources for
students that include:
 Math Empowerment Zone: Free math help
for any student in any math class provided by
MCC instructors. Gorman Center
 Writing Center: Any student with any
writing assignment can get help by MCC
English instructors. They will critique and
assist you with your assignment. Curtice-Mott
Building
Learning Center: Provides tutoring and
special accommodations for students that qualify.
Student Life: Join one of the twenty active
MCC clubs/organization or create your own.
Learn more at this year’s Fall Rally at the main
campus on September 24.
If you ever need to drop a class, please seek
counseling or assistance to help you finish the
class. If you do need to drop, make sure you
understand how it will affect your financial aid and
balance due to the college.
Seek long term solutions over short term benefits.

the wisdom of looking at the long term results
your actions will produce. Some people only
dream of success while others work hard at it

anything is hard work and determination.

I hope each of you have a rewarding
experience at MCC and the Northern Tier

10. If you are followed into your driveway or parking lot,
stay locked inside your vehicle until you can identify
the occupants of the vehicle. If threatened, sound
your horn until you attract attention or the vehicle
leaves.
11. When parking at night, choose well-lit areas. Before
getting out of your vehicle, check for people loitering.
12. Always remove your ignition keys. Lock the vehicle
whenever it is unattended.
13. Before entering your vehicle, always check the
interior, paying particular attention to the floor and
rear seat.
14. For escorts to and from your vehicle, ask the
Northern Tier Center Police Officer’s.
1. Be aware! Recognize your vulnerability.
2. Report all suspicious persons, vehicles and
activities to the Campus Police Officer’s
immediately.
3. Use the "buddy system" and watch out for your
neighbor.
4. Keep your doors locked whenever you find
yourself alone in a building.
5. Report lights that are out and any hazardous
conditions immediately to the Northern Tier
Center staff.
6. If you see someone being victimized, get
involved and notify the Campus Police
1. Avoid traveling alone at night.
2. Confine walking to well-lit, regular traveled walks
and pathways. Avoid shortcuts and keep away
from shrubbery, bushes, alleyways, or any other
areas where an assailant might be lurking.
3. Avoid the athletic fields and tennis courts after
dark.
4. Do not accept rides from casual acquaintances.
5. When walking to your vehicle or residence, have
your keys ready in hand.
6. When being dropped off by taxi or private vehicle,
ask the driver to wait until you get inside.
7. If threatened by an approaching vehicle, run in the
opposite direction. The vehicle will have to turn
around in order to pursue you.
8. When getting out of a car, take a look around to
make sure that you are not being followed.
9. If you think you are being followed, cross the street
and, if necessary, keep crossing back and forth. If
you are pursued, call for help and run to a NTC
campus building, business, residence, enlist the
aid of a passerby, flag down a passing motorist, or
as a last resort pull a fire alarm. Do anything that
might attract attention or summon assistance. If
you are walking alone and someone passes you,
check to be sure that person has continued walking in the other direction.
10. Call the Campus Police Officer’s at 810-232-4339
for Escort Service if walking alone at night.
11. If you find yourself confronted by an assailant you
must remember that while screaming and
struggling may in some instances frighten off the
assailant, in other instances you may further
antagonize the assailant and bring forth a more
violent reaction. Above all you must keep your
head and assess the situation before choosing
your course of action. Whether or not the assailant
is armed or has made threats against your life
should be a determining factor in your decision.
The key word in this type of situation is survival.
1. Do not pick up hitchhikers.
2. Whenever possible, limit traveling to well-lit, well
-traveled roads.
3. Keep your windows closed and doors locked.
4. When stopped at traffic lights or stop signs,
keep your vehicle in gear. If threatened, sound
your horn and drive away as soon as possible.
5. Consider installing an alarm system with a panic
switch.
6. Avoid stopping in poorly lit, out-of-the-way
places.
7. If your vehicle breaks down, signal for
assistance by raising the hood and by tying a
white handkerchief to the radio antenna or door
handle. Stay inside your vehicle with the
windows closed and the doors locked. If a
roadside Samaritan stops, roll down your
window just enough to talk and ask that he/she
call the police. If the person appears to be a
threat, sound the horn and flash your lights.
8. If you think you are being followed, keep out of
isolated areas. Look for a place where there are
people, then stop and let the vehicle pass you.
9. If the vehicle continues to follow, drive to the
nearest location where you can get assistance,
i.e., gas stations, shopping centers, police or fire
station, etc.
