OCTOBER 2014
Thomas Saelens, Site Manager
As a society and as individuals we
hate to fail. It is viewed negatively
and with utter distain. Everyone
wants to succeed, hit the mark,
make the grade, and achieve
greatness without the stain or
stigma of “failure”. This view may
come from the American psyche, social conformity,
self-esteem issues, or distrust in the perception of
any shortcoming. However, “Positive Failure” is the
most important part of success and we need to
recognize the value and awareness of this power and
not be afraid of our failures or to fail. A “positive
failure” being something you do your best, work hard,
but the outcome is below what was asked or needed.
Negative failure would be not trying to do your best
and not really caring about your effort or outcome.
“Positive failure” is the building block of success, if
you learn from the endeavor, evaluate your efforts,
and can improve your next attempt. Each of us
should be proud to say “I have failures…and it has
made me successful”.

Organizations, like Mott College, face the same
issues as individuals. We need your help to identify
our shortcomings. An organizational culture
sometimes can become complacent through the
policy, authority, procedures and systems in place
which will blind it from what you may see as a
student and customer. If you have ideas, concerns,
suggestions; the college, staff, and instructors are
interested in your constructive views. There are
never guarantees but having input is vital for growth
and positive change.
The people below were all, at some time in their life, failures or
consider so by their peers but “failed their way to success”:

Abraham Lincoln went to war a captain & returned a
private; was a failure as a businessman; as a lawyer was too
impractical and temperamental to succeed; was defeated his
first two attempts for congress; defeated in his application for
commissioner of the General Land Office, defeated in the
senatorial election of 1854, defeated in his efforts for the
vice-presidency in 1856, and defeated in the senatorial
election of 1858.

Henry Ford failed and went broke five times before he
succeeded.

R. H. Macy failed seven times before his store in New
York City caught on.

Edison’s took 10,000 attempts before he created a working light bulb.

Fred Smith, founder of Federal Express, received a " C"
on his college paper detailing reliable overnight delivery
service. His Yale professor said, "…the concept is
interesting & well formed, but in order to earn better than a
"C" grade, ideas must be feasible.”

Rocket scientist Robert Goddard’s had his ideas bitterly
rejected by scientific peers that thought rocket propulsion
would not work in the rarefied atmosphere of outer space.

Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball
teams. Jordan once observed, "I've failed over and over
again in my life. That is why I succeed."
I hope to see you continue your success at MCC
and the Northern Tier Center this Winter Semester.
Thank you for making our site a success in the
community. If you need any assistance or have
question please stop in and see me or my staff.
Thomas Saelens,
Site Manager

These people learned from their failures and were not
afraid of them. So be persistent, keep working hard, and
learn each time you fail. Fail your way to success and

continue that counts.” - Winston Churchill

doing nothing, and being nothing.” - Denis Waitley

time. It is the ability to use failure that often leads to greater
success. I’ve met people who don’t want to try for fear of
failing.” - J.K. Rowling

Children will be anxious to stuff themselves with treats, but
parents need to take these necessary precautions first:
All motorist need to be especially alert and cautious when driving
on Halloween because of the high number of pedestrians walking
the streets.







Watch for children darting out from between parked cars.
Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs.
Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully.
At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in
dark clothing.
Never use your cell phone while driving.
Discourage teens from driving on Halloween. There are too
many hazards and distractions for inexperienced drivers.



When making or purchasing Halloween costumes, follow these
safety precaution to ensure your children remain safe while
looking great:
Most importantly, all children under the age of 12 should be
accompanied by a parent or responsible adult, but before
trick-or-treating, parents should:









Instruct your children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas
and avoid trick-or-treating alone.
Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return
home.
Teach your children to never enter a stranger’s home.
Agree on a specific time for your children to come home.
Give your children flashlights with fresh batteries to help
them see and for others to see them.



Make sure your child or a responsible adult with them
carries a cell phone for quick communication.
Review all appropriate pedestrian and traffic safety
rules with your children.






Insist that treats be brought home for inspection before
anything is eaten, then examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before your children eat them.
Give children an early meal before going out to prevent
them from filling up on Halloween treats or eating anything before you can inspect it.
Only let your children eat factory-wrapped treats. Avoid
homemade treats unless you know the cook well.
When in doubt, throw it out.

Look both ways before crossing the street and use
established crosswalks whenever possible.
Walk, do not run, from house to house.
Do not cross yards and lawns where unseen objects or the uneven terrain can present tripping
hazards and never walk near lit candles or luminaries.
Walk on sidewalks, not in the streets. If there are
no sidewalks, walk on the far edge of the road
facing traffic.
-6-
All costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire-resistant,
If children are allowed out after dark, fasten reflective tape
to their costumes and bags to make sure they are visible.
When buying Halloween makeup, make sure it is nontoxic
and always test it in a small area first. Remove all makeup
before children go to bed to prevent skin and eye irritation.
Masks can limit or block eyesight, so consider non-toxic
makeup or decorative hats as safer alternatives.
If masks are worn, they should have large eye holes and nose
and mouth openings. Encourage your children to remove
their masks before crossing the street,
Children should only wear well-fitting costumes and shoes to
avoid trips and falls.
Do not allow your children to wear decorative contact lenses,
as they present a risk for serious eye injury.
Knives, swords and other accessories should be made from
cardboard or flexible materials. Do not allow children to
carry sharp objects.
Weather Emergencies:
 Please enter the numbers for the
contact method you prefer to receive.

Every student should use October to examine their academic needs and get
their classes pre-approved before Winter registration actually opens.
NO WAITING IN LINE TO SEE A COUNSELOR/
ADVISOR, IF PRE-APPROVED.
How to Get Winter Classes Pre-Approved:


Additional Tips:
Current students, may self-register, as
long as they are comfortable with
selecting the proper classes. (exceptions
apply: those on Academic Probation)
New students and those not sure about
choosing classes, need to meet with a
NTC Counselor/Advisor right away.

Make sure you PLAN ahead. Take
pre-requisite classes that may be
required for courses that wish to take in
the Sping, Summer or Fall semesters.

If you meet with the Counselor before
Winter Registration opens, make sure
you obtain a completed and signed
“Class Registration Worksheet”. This
allows you to register (if approval is
needed) by simply turning this form into
the NTC staff When Registration Opens.

Take classes at the NTC (Clio) Branch
when possible. Saves time and money in
travel expenses and keeps you closer to
home during bad winter weather.

Make sure your 2014-15 FAFSA (Free
Application for Federal Student Aid) is
complete. If you have not done so
already, completing the FAFSA form early is your best chance to maximize your
financial aid award and limit any
obstacles.
If you have questions regarding your Financial Aid, the NTC staff will try to help you or
