ST. JOACHIM CATHOLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 435 Rutherford Road North, Brampton, ON, L6V 3V9 905-453-4472 A Prayer of Remembrance Principal M. Di Nunzio Vice Principal I. Judd Office Staff L. Quiambao Y. McCutcheon God our Father, your Son Jesus gave up His life to free us from the power of sin and death. He showed us that the greatest love is in giving up one’s life for others. Today we remember those who fought and died for our freedom. We ask you to bless and console them together with their families. Help us to understand the sacrifices they made in leaving their loved ones to face the horrors of war. May we never forget their generosity. May your Holy Spirit give us the courage to resist evil in all its forms and show us how to be peacemakers through prayer and action, lest we forget those who fought, suffered and died that we might have the freedom and peace we enjoy today. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen. EOCCC: Our Language, Our Story 1.0, 2009. Superintendent M. Vecchiarino 14SEPTEMBER 201 Family of Schools Brampton North East Trustee A. Da Silva Parish St. Anne Parish Priest Father J. Cherickal Associate Pastor Father F. Marrone During the month of November, we are focusing on the Virtue of Conscience Faith is the great virtue of believing in God and trusting that God is with us. A person of conscience… chooses to do the right thing, even when it is hard takes time to think and pray before making decisions knows that their actions and decisions affect all those around them thinks of others before themselves Let us now pray...for the grace and strength to be people of conscience-people who know the good and decent way to act and then choose to act that way. Parish Telephone 905 453-1303 “Through A Celebration Of Our Faith All Who Enter Our School May Grow Together As A Christian Community” PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE October has been a busy month! Our Junior volleyball teams participated in tournaments and our Boys advanced to the Family Finals – they played their best and lost a close one in the finals. Our Cross Country team travelled to Heart Lake and represented our school well at the Brampton North East Meet. We had 3 students qualify for the Board Meet at Centennial Park in Etobicoke. On November 11th, Remembrance Day, we commemorated the courage of our veterans and all of those who have died so that we may live in freedom and peace. We pray, also, for God’s blessings upon those soldiers who are presently overseas and we continue to hope that someday we may all, as God’s people, live together in peace and unity. Praise God, may it be so. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” John 8:12. IT’S GETTING CHILLY! In order to protect the health and safety of school aged children in Peel, the Peel Health Department has developed guidelines for periods of extreme weather conditions. Weather information is gathered from Environment Canada and School Board guidelines are followed when sending students outside. Students should come dressed appropriately for winter weather (hats, mitts, etc.) For health reasons and to help keep the school clean, we would request that the students have a pair of indoor shoes. Please ensure that they are properly labelled and have non-skid marking soles. Students will be asked to leave their outdoor boots/shoes outside their classrooms. Please note that in the event of an emergency evacuation, students will not have the opportunity to put boots on. This is another reason for students to have indoor shoes. Thank you for your help and cooperation. COLD AND FLU SEASON As cold and flu season approaches, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board continues to be vigilant in ensuring that our schools are clean and that our school communities are educated regarding good hand hygiene and cough etiquette. These practices are promoted on an ongoing basis, but as the prevalence of colds and flu increases, our board increases the cleaning of contact surfaces, as well as reminds schools to review cold and flu prevention with students and staff. Many resources are utilized from our regional health units. A reminder, as well, that communicable diseases can be contracted in public places throughout the year. For example, cold-related viruses, such as Enterovirus, are transferred from person to person through hand contact. Cold and flu viruses typically peak from December through February, but can start as early as October. Please assist us by reviewing good hand washing procedures, as well as other preventative measures, as out-lined on the Peel Health website. As always, children who are unwell, should be kept at home. For more information, visit the health unit website: http://www.peelregion.ca/health Direct links to the above information can be found in the Parent Section of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board website at www.dpcdsb.org ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION In an effort to be more environmentally responsible, St. Joachim School would like to provide information electronically to parents/guardians through direct email to students’ homes. Canada’s new anti-spam legislation which came into effect on July 1, 2014, requires a signed Consent Form in order to be able to communicate electronically with parents/guardians when sending newsletters and other forms of communication which include promotional information. By signing the Consent form (included in this newsletter) and providing us with an email address, you will be able to support our efforts to protect our environment by reducing the amount of paper and electricity we use in preparing paper newsletters. We will be able to send you our school newsletter, as well as any important updates, efficiently and effectively. Of course, should you prefer not to give us your email address, we will continue to provide a paper copy of the newsletter for your child to bring home. Timely, on-going communication is essential to maintaining healthy school-home relationships and we hope that this initiative will support and improve the level of communication between the school and home. We continue to strive to improve student achievement at St. Joachim by using the threepart lesson, guided/shared reading and collaborative inquiry for staff. Information about the overall school results are also available at www.eqao.com. This year’s Primary (Grade 3) and Junior (Grade 6) EQAO testing will take place May 25 to June 5, 2015. Parents are asked to keep this time period in mind when scheduling family trips or making appointments. It is very important that all Grade 3 and 6 students are in attendance for these assessments.
