World War II Homefront Activity:
Before studying Chapter 35, read over these “Themes”:
Theme: Unified by Pearl Harbor, America effectively carried out a war mobilization effort that produced vast
social and economic changes within American society.
Theme: Following its get Hitler first strategy, the United States and its Allies invaded and liberated conquered
Europe from Fascist rule. The slower strategy of island-hopping against Japan also proceeded successfully
until the atomic bomb brought a sudden end to World War II.
After studying your individual topic and then completing the gallery walk, students will be able to:
1. Describe the domestic mobilization for war, and the mobilization of manpower and womanpower for both
military and wartime production.
2. Describe the war’s effects on American society, including regional migration, race relations, and women’s
roles.
Activity:
Students are randomly assigned a World War II homefront topic. Students will investigate their topic and a
produce a one-pager on the topic. The expectations for the one-pager include:
• Describe subject in clear summary. No more than five sentences to explain OVERALL significance.
• Detail important information about the subject.
• Explain connections to other issues in this time period, as well as past & future events.
• Provide images to help show more about it.
One pagers are due the following class period. During that class period, students will complete a gallery walk
activity and collect information about the other topics of the World War II homefront.
