DEVELOPING THE 4-SENTENCE PARAGRAH
Directions: Read the paragraphs below. Underline each sentence with the correct
color to show what type of sentence it is within the paragraph.
Red – Topic Sentence – This tells what the paragraph is all about.
Green – Supporting Detail #1 – A sentence that explains your Topic Sentence.
Green – Supporting Detail #2 – Another sentence that explains your Topic Sentence.
(This sentence should be a different detail than Detail #1. For example, if you
were writing about a favorite teacher, you wouldn’t want one detail to be She is kind
and another detail to be She is nice because they are basically saying the same thing!
Rather, you could say She is nice and She is organized.)
Red – Conclusion Sentence – Tells the reader AGAIN what your paragraph was about!

It’s a real treat to go to the movies. The big screen
makes the movie even better. The popcorn and candy are so
delicious. Going to the movies is the best!

Summer is my favorite season. Staying up late at night
is so much fun. It’s also a great time to go swimming. Of
all the seasons of the year, summer is #1!
