ST. CORNELIUS SCHOOL GIVES BACK TO THE
COMMUNITY DURING ADVENT!
PROJECT GIFT BOX
On behalf of the students and staff at St. Cornelius, we
take this opportunity to express our sincerest appreciation
for your contribution to our Project Gift Box and Cram a
Cruiser outreach projects during the month of December.
Your contributions touched many families this Christmas
and your generosity is incredible. Our Christmas tree in the
front foyer was bursting with gift boxes!
CRAM-A-CRUISER IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
CALEDON O.P.P.
Lord, of light and love,
let the radiance of your
presence be a light to
our path and a guide on
our journey.
Banish from us all
deeds of darkness,
that we may come to
your presence and walk
before you as children of light;
through him who is the light of
the world, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
HAPPY NEW YEAR

The Cram-a-Cruiser Christmas Food Drive was very
successful. Students filled our Caledon OPP cruisers with
non-perishable food items to support our local food banks.
These generous donations have demonstrated the season
of giving, hope and charity.
It is through the support of
our school community
that we are able to continue
to strengthen and
perpetuate the message
from Pope Francis to
“Open the Doors of Mercy”.
OUT OF THE COLD
As we look forward to a new year, we will continue to lead
by example in the light of Christ. We are continue to
encourage all parents and guardians to send in their gently
used ADULT sized winter coats for donation to people in
need who are in transition. Let us support the adults in our
community who are in need as well.
The winter
outerwear will be accepted in the front foyer of St.
Cornelius in two different bins, one for men and one for
women. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

BUS DELAYS DUE TO WEATHER
BUS SAFETY
With winter weather fast approaching, it is possible that buses
may be delayed at times. Please be flexible in understanding
that runs may be delayed due to poor weather conditions. We
suggest that you please check www.stopr.ca for up- to- theminute bus delay information. You will require your child’s OEN
number which you can find on their report card.
BUS CANCELLATIONS AND SCHOOL CLOSING
During the winter months inclement weather may cause
disruption of bus transportation and regular school operations.
A decision to cancel school transportation and/or to close
schools is usually made by 6:00 a.m. and will be announced on
the various radio and T.V. stations in the greater Toronto area.
The following message “THE DUFFERIN-PEEL CATHOLIC
DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD BUSES AND THE PEEL DISTRICT
SCHOOL BOARD BUSES IN THE TOWN OF CALEDON ARE
CANCELLED”, means that bus runs for St. Cornelius will be
cancelled.
Parents/Guardians and students can check on
cancellations/closures notices information will be posted on
our school website- a yellow ALERT banner at the top of the
page will advise of any cancellations, alternatively, you can
check the board twitter account for updates on bus
cancellations and school closing on @DPCDSBSchools or
phone 905-890-1221 to hear a recorded message, or you can
subscribe to eCommunity email blast at www.dpcdsb.org
where you can receive board information on a regular basis
and receive cancellation notices.
Maintaining safety on the bus is a shared responsibility.
Students, parents, our bus drivers and the school are
needed as partners to ensure the safe transporting of
students to and from our school. We require everyone to
be committed to following the behavioural expectations of
riding the bus. Those who choose not to comply with the
safety and behavioural standards put all users of the bus
at risk. Drivers are instructed and have an obligation to
issue pink slips to students who choose not to comply.
The school in turn will contact parents to work together to
help students make appropriate choices. Please review
the expectations with your children. We thank you for
your support and cooperation in our effort to provide safe
transportation for your children.
All students are reminded that there is to be no food or
drink on the bus at any time. There are many children who
suffer from food allergies. Touching a seat where another
child has consumed an allergen can result in anaphylaxis
for those with severe allergies. We are also concerned
about possible choking.
In the interest of safety, we remind all students that they
are to remain seated at all times when the bus is in motion.
“Indoor” voices are expected to minimize driver
distraction. Weather plays a significant factor in the timely
arrival of your child’s bus. Drivers are given the right to
make judgment calls as required especially in rural
situations. Safety is the primary concern and all decisions
are made with this as the highest priority. Your patience
and flexibility in understanding this variable is really
appreciated. Should you have any questions or concerns,
please contact the school.
A reminder of our valuable transportation website for upto-the-minute delays due to weather, mechanical
problems, etc. Visit www.stopr.ca.

DRESS FOR WINTER
Prepare for extreme cold events every winter—it’s always
a possibility in Ontario. There are numerous steps you can
take both before and during this type of event :

All of us have a more enjoyable time outdoors in the winter
season when we are dressed appropriately. Please
consider that children are dressed warmly, wearing boots,
coats, mittens, and hats. Always dress for unexpected
weather activities. We suggest that students, especially in
the primary grades, have a change of shoes & clothing at
school in case they get wet outside.





STAYING IN FOR RECESS
Stay in heated buildings as much as possible (your
home, friend or family’s place, public buildings
such as malls, libraries, etc);
Drink warm fluids;
Dress appropriately when going outside (multiple
layers of loose fitting clothes, toques, mittens, etc)
and cover up all exposed skin since, in extreme
cold, frostbite can occur within minutes;
Avoid strenuous exercise while out in the cold as
much as possible;
Know the weather forecast, and avoid travelling
when extreme weather is predicted.
(Source: Peel Public Health Department)
In the colder weather, we receive parent requests to allow
children to remain indoors when students have a cold, flu,
etc. On extremely cold days, particularly when the wind
chill factor lowers temperatures considerably, we will limit
the amount of time that students spend outdoors, or hold
recess indoors in accordance with guidelines provided by
DPCDSB Health and Safety Department. With the
exception of these occasions, we encourage children to go
outdoors for recess and during the lunch break.
As per Board policy, the
amount of time outdoors
shall be reduced for children
(grade 8 and under) when
the temperature is -20
degrees Celsius or colder
with or without wind chill.
When the temperature or equivalent wind chill
temperature is minus 25 degrees Celsius or lower children
shall be kept indoors. Some medical conditions may
increase sensitivity to cold, parents should consult their
physician and please let your child’s teacher know.
HEALTH MATTERS
A gentle reminder to parents/guardians that all
communicable diseases must be reported to the school
office (e.g. chicken pox, measles, Fifth’s disease). Students
should remain at home until they are no longer
contagious. We are required to report to the Region of
Peel Health Department any contagious diseases in our
community.
THINGS YOU CAN DO TO PROTECT YOURSELF
What is the Wind Chill Factor?
On a windy day, it feels much colder outdoors compared
to a day without wind. This apparent coldness is due to a
rapid cooling effect produced by the wind. The wind chill
factor is a measure of the combined chilling effect of

SAFE SCHOOLS FOCUS FOR JANUARY –
Conflict is Inevitable; Bullying is Not!
The key message in
January is “conflict is
inevitable, bullying is
not”. The grade specific
activities
provide
opportunity for students
to learn to differentiate
bullying from the daily
conflict
situations
everyone faces. Students
also learn how to use an
assertive
form
of
communication known as
“I-messages” to deal with
Self-Control helps us to resist the temptation to do
something that we will regret. It also helps us to resist the
temptation to do something that will harm ourselves or
others. Each time you exercise self-control you grow
stronger in the Lord and invite peace to settle over your
life as you avoid any guilt you may feel from having made
a poor decision.
conflict and prevent bullying.
Everyone faces conflict in daily life and through it can learn
to negotiate and build relationships. Bullying is a form of
violence that leaves no room for negotiation and seeks to
tear others down rather than build relationships.
Tips for Parents:
 help your children apply the definition of bullying to
determine if a situation is bullying or conflict-- Does
one person have more power than the other? Is the
behaviour intentional / on purpose? Does it keep
happening?
(Answering yes to these questions
indicates bullying; answering no indicates conflict)
 use teachable moments and ‘what if’ scenarios with
your children to help them differentiate bullying and
conflict
 talk with your children about the difference between
being passive, aggressive or assertive
 encourage the use of assertive communication such as
“I-messages” in your family I feel….when…and I would
like (or I need)…. Rather than …You made me….when
you…and you need to
JANUARY VIRTUE OF THE MONTH VIRTUE
CORNER
For the month of January, our Virtue is Self-Control. God
wants us to do what we know and feel is right. A person
with self-control:
• is patient;
• knows how to wait his/her turn;
• can calm him/herself down and think before
reacting to situations;
• knows how to avoid physical aggression (hitting,
kicking, pushing, etc.);

Waste-Free
Lunch
Challenge from January
18th to 22nd
We will be participating in a
board
wide
Waste
Reduction Week Challenge.
The goal of this program is
to decrease the amount of
garbage that our school
produces and to educate
our students, staff and
parents about waste management. We encourage
students to use reusable water bottles and food
containers. Another way to reduce our garbage is by
encouraging our students to bring their organic waste
home and properly dispose of it in their green bins at
home. On February 17th, we will be hosting an Earth
Rangers Battery Blitz presentation. Stay tuned for more
information about our school-wide battery blitz in
February.
