As students move through the grades, they develop and then consolidate their learning skills and work habits in preparation for post -secondary education and the world of work. Teachers collaborate with students and their parents to develop the following learning skills and work habits over time: I can follow classroom rules I focus during lessons, group work and independent work I complete all assignments on time I take ownership and to the best of my ability or my own decisions and behaviour Organization I can make and follow a plan to complete work on time (e.g., make a schedule, timeline, and set goals) Independent Work Responsibility Organization Independent Work Collaboration Initiative Self-Regulation I keep my desk and materials neat and organized so I can find things quickly I can start my day and follow instructions without reminders I know how to use success criteria to check and improve my work before having others assess it I know what to do when I finish activities early I use my time in class appropriately One of the ways teachers collaborate with students in their learning at Canadian Martyrs is through the co-construction of success criteria for a few of the learning skills and work habits each term. In the next column is an example of our Grade Six students’ success criteria (what success looks like) for three Learning Skills. Assessment & Evaluation Learning skills and work habits will be assessed using a four-point scale: Learning skills and E – Excellent work habits G – Good comments should S – Satisfactory reflect student’s N – Needs Improvement strength, next steps, provide specificon Assessment and Evaluation in Ontario Schools please visit: Forand more information classroom examples. http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/policyfunding/growsuccess.pdf 3 Cross Country Running VOLLEYBALL: We would like to congratulate all participants who competed in the Mississauga East Cross Country Meet at Centennial Park. This is a great opportunity for our grade 6 students to learn about the consequences of drug abuse and we look forward to Constable Faulkner's visits. PEDICULOSIS PHYSICAL EDUCATION REMINDERS AND EXPECTATIONS Although not a communicable disease, pediculosis (head lice) is a concern to families and teachers. Each year it is common for outbreaks of pediculosis to occur. Unfortunately, in recent years, head lice have become increasingly common throughout North America. They are parasites, which have been common among human beings for centuries. They are not connected in any way with dirt or neglect. Anyone can be infested with them. If a case of head lice is found, we inform all parents by way of a letter. Students are required to wear appropriate gym clothing for Phys-Ed class (t-shirt, shoes, running shoes). Track pants, sweatshirts and jackets may be appropriate in the fall and early spring when we are outside. Students are not permitted to participate in gym class without running shoes. As per the Ministry Health and Physical Education document, students are not permitted to wear jewelry during physical education classes. Ideally, jewelry is left at home. All jewelry must be removed prior to Phys-ed class with the exception of medical alert bracelets or newly pierced ears. It is recommended that students with a medical alert bracelet wear a tennis wristband over the bracelet or that it is taped to the arm with medical tape. Newly pierced ears may be covered with medical tape during class. If jewelry is being removed at school, students are encouraged to keep a small container in their gym bag or knapsack to safely store their jewelry. Teachers are unable to remove/replace earrings for hygienic reasons. In the past, teachers have given Grade 1 students tape to tape their earrings in place as they have significant difficulties replacing earrings. If your child is unable to participate in a physical education class due to injury or illness, he/she is required to bring a letter to school identifying the injury/illness and indicate when they are permitted to resume classes. If cases of head lice are found in a classroom, we shall inform all parents of students in that class. We request that you also check your own children and, if you find them to be infested, we would ask that you let us know. Students are reminded to refrain from sharing hats, especially during the winter months. Any infected student will need to be checked before re-entry to class. HEPATITIS B IMMUNIZATION, MENINGOCOCCAL MENINGITIS, HPV On November 4th, 2015 Peel Health will continue to offer free immunization against Hepatitis B, Meningococcal Meningitis (Dose #1) for students in grade 7 and HPV (Dose #1) for grade 8 female students during the 2015/2016 school year. Students in grade 7 during the 2014-2015 school year, who did not complete the Hep B series or receive Meningococcal Meningitis can complete the vaccinations in grade 8. Immunization against Hepatitis B, Meningococcal Meningitis, and HPV continues to be voluntary and a parent/legal guardian must authorize immunization for all students under the age of 14 years. For safety reasons, we would like to remind all students to wear running shoes in the gym. Outdoor running shoes must not be worn in the gym and a pair of “indoor running shoes” must be brought and left at the school. During the winter months when students wear snow boots to school, footwear must be available to be worn indoors, especially in the event of an unexpected fire drill. 6 FREE ON-LINE TUTORING Homework Help is a free service, offering live oneon-one tutoring by certified Ontario teachers. Criminal Reference Checks are free of charge for volunteers. Forms are available in the office. Please note that all volunteers must have a criminal reference check in order to participate on a school trip. LOCKDOWN/FIRE DRILL PROCEDURES During the past couple of months, we have rehearsed with students a number of emergency response situations including lockdown and fire drills. All schools are required by Board policy to practice these procedures throughout the school year. Participation is essential for precautionary purposes only, so that in the event of an emergency, students will be prepared to respond in a safe and responsible manner. A Message from PEEL POLICE I know we are a few months into the school year, but I wanted to make sure I took a moment to introduce myself to all of the parents. I am Cst. Mooken and I will be the Neighbourhood Policing Officer (NPO) for Canadian Martyrs for the next two years. I have been a member of the Peel Regional Police for 8 years and have spent all of my time at 12 Division in various units within the division and like to think I bring a vast amount of knowledge to my new task as NPO. I like to give back to the community and have volunteered with numerous agencies within the Region of Peel including the Brampton Santa Claus Parade where I am currently responsible for media relations. I am a strong proponent of volunteering and look forward to arranging opportunities to encourage the students to give back to their community. I aim to be more engaged within the school community and in the community at large. I will be at the school almost on a daily basis, so it is more than likely going to be my police car that you see parked out front so please don’t be alarmed. Look for sections in future newsletters where I will provide tips and suggestions to enhance safety and assist in crime prevention. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me through the school or email me at 3183@peelpolice.ca and I will do my best to address them as soon as possible. 7 Reminders and Resources: Cold and Flu Season As cold and flu season approaches, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board continues to be vigilant in ensuring that our schools are clean and that our school communities are educated regarding good hand hygiene and cough etiquette. These practices are promoted on an ongoing basis, but as the prevalence of colds and flu increases, our board increases the cleaning of contact surfaces, as well as reminds schools to review cold and flu prevention with students and staff. Many resources are utilized from our regional health units. A reminder, as well, that communicable diseases can be contracted in public places throughout the year. For example, coldrelated viruses, such as Enterovirus, are transferred from person to person through hand contact. Cold and flu viruses typically peak from December through February, but can start as early as October. Regional Health Unit Resources Please assist us by reviewing good hand washing procedures, as well as other preventative measures, as outlined in the various Peel Health and Wellington Dufferin Guelph (WDG) resources available to you through their websites. As always, children who are unwell, should be kept at home. Flu Clinics Also available on the Peel Health and WDG websites, are the schedules of local Flu Clinics.
