A PRAYER FOR FATHERS
Principal: K. Barton
God our Father, We give you thanks and praise for fathers young
and old. We pray for young fathers, newly embracing their vocation; May
they find courage and perseverance to balance work, family and faith in joy and
sacrifice. We pray for our own Fathers around the world whose children are
lost or suffering; May they know that the God of compassion walks with
them in their sorrow. We pray for men who are not fathers but still mentor
and guide us with fatherly love and advice. We remember fathers, grandfather,
and great grandfathers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our
memory and nourish us with their love. Amen

There are so many Fathers to honour - grandfathers, godfathers, adoptive fathers, stepfathers,
foster fathers and friends’ fathers. In different ways, any one or more of these fathers has
earned our love.
To all fathers in our school community, from all of us at St. John the
Baptist Catholic School, Happy Father’s Day !

FAIRNESS

ROMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOL

During the month of June we will celebrate the virtue of FAIRNESS. The virtue of fairness describes
the belief that everyone deserves an opportunity to succeed and is not always about making things exactly equal. Some people need a bit more time, space, money and support to have an equal chance to
succeed and they deserve that chance.
In today’s terms fairness could be called good sportsmanship. A good sport makes sure the rules of the
game give everyone an even chance to participate. Not everyone has to win. Everyone deserves a
chance to be in the game.
A fair person:

BOYS NIGHT IN A SUCCESS!!!
St. John the Baptist’s first ever Boys Night In took place on May 14 and was well received
by all the junior boys involved in the evenings festivities. The night was based upon the
Bible passage, 13 Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. 14 Do everything in
love. (1 Corinthians 16:13-14). The night started with a liturgy and continued on with many activities including karate, team-building, Minute to Win it Challenges, scavenger hunts, video games, and a 3 on 3 mini tournament!! The night served as a way for our boys to build
upon relationships with their peers and to further develop their well-being in the school.
We look forward to what next year has to bring. Thank you to all the intermediate students
who volunteered as leaders and to all the teachers who came out to support the event!
CALEDON PUBLIC LIBRARY!!!
School is out!!! Be sure to head to Caledon Public Library this summer as they will be hosting a variety of
kids and teens programming and events. You can also participate in the Summer Reading program for a
chance to win some amazing prizes. Please refer to our Books and Beyond newsletter for program details
and locations.

8:45 entry
10:51-11:06 morning recess (grade1-8)

2:20-2:35 afternoon recess (grade1-8)
Kindergarten students will have varied outdoor playtimes, that will be determined by the teacher schedule.
They do not follow the schools recess schedule. Kindergarten lunchtime will occur from 11:46-12:46.
They will not be outside at this time with the rest of the school.
Procedure for Students Leaving the School During the Day
Please be advised, that the school policy is that students who ask to leave school during the day, MUST
have a signed note by their parent giving the student permission to walk home/go out for lunch or early
dismissal. The school will not be accepting verbal permission by the parent over the phone except in
emergency situations. We appreciate your cooperation with this policy, as students will not be allowed to
call home from school, or use their cell phone to obtain verbal permission. The safety of our students at St.
John the Baptist is always our prime concern.
Thank you for helping us address this issue.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL COUNCIL
Many sincere thanks are extended to all of the members of our 2014-2015 Catholic School Council and to the other parents who
attended our meetings throughout the school year. The existence and support of the Catholic School Council is essential to the
successful operation of our Catholic school community.
Many vital programs are funded and made possible by the work of our school council and hot lunch committee members. Discussions are already ongoing as to how best to support our school community during the next school year. Information regarding
participation in the school council for next year will be available in the September newsletter and “Meet the Teacher” evening.
Please consider helping to make St. John the Baptist Catholic School a better place for your children!
Be ACTIVE, take STEPS to school!!
STEPS to School is a weekly walking program run by your school community
with support from the Region of Peel. The purpose of this program is to get
students and parents more active by walking to and from school at least
once a week. The STEPS program would like to take “steps” towards engaging students to use active ways of travelling to and from school. Walking is
the simplest form of physical activity and leads to many benefits. A reminder
that with the nice weather, students are encouraged to walk to school!
ANNUAL BOOK HUNT NOW ON!
It's that time of year, when children look forward to summer vacation, parents look forward to September 8 and Mr. Graham looks for books! JUNE 5th
is the last day students are able to take books home from the library. All library resources need to be returned ASAP, so they can be put in order for
the next school year. Textbooks: In September all students were “loaned” for
their use in class. Each student was assigned a numbered textbook. This
number must be returned to the teacher before the end of June or parents
will receive a letter asking for the replacement cost of the textbook. If the
textbook has been damaged by your child, they will also be expected to
pay for a replacement book. Please contact your child’s teacher for any
questions. Thanks for your help with this, and have a great summer!.

LOST & FOUND
Our school Lost and Found containers have various items of student clothing. Most of these items look new, in good condition
and certainly suitable for continued use. If your child is missing any items, especially clothing, please visit the school at your earliest convenience to check our Lost and Found containers. Please sign in at the office upon your arrival. Any Lost and Found
items remaining at school at the end of June will be donated to a local charity.
STUDENT MEDICATION
All medication will be sent home with your child on the last day of school. As well, new medical forms will be sent home for next year. It is essential that the forms are returned the first week of
September, so we have updated records and procedures. Please have the forms signed by a doctor
over the summer.
SCHOOL YEARBOOK
The 2015-2016 St. John the Baptist Catholic School yearbook will need to be pre-ordered. Please fill in the
form that was sent home and return to your child’s teacher or speak to Mr. Graham if you have any further questions.

INFORMATION FOR DPCDSB PARENTS REGARDING SCHOOL START UP
TRANSPORTATION PROCEDURES FOR SEPTEMBER 2015
If your home address will be changing during the summer, please notify the office staff at your child’s school prior to June 30. Address
changes received after July 10 will not be reflected in the planned bus routes to commence in September and may result in transportation
services not being available for your child during the first weeks of school. Parents will be responsible for their children getting to and
from school until appropriate transportation service is arranged.
The distance criteria for transportation eligibility must be more than:
1.0 kilometer Kindergarten and Grade 1
1.6 kilometers for Grades 2 – 4
2.0 kilometers for Grades 5 – 8
3.8 kilometers for Grades 9 – 12
If your child is moving to grade 2, grade 5, grade 7 or grade 9 in
the 2015-2016 school year, their eligibility status for transportation may be changing. Eligibility information can be accessed at the website noted below.
Parents who received letters in May of this year indicating that the transportation eligibility status for their children is being revised due to eligibility reassessment are reminded that this change will occur effective September 3, 2015.
All transported kindergarten and grade 1 students are required to be met by a parent/caregiver when disembarking from their bus on their
return trip from school.
Courtesy transportation, which is assignment of ineligible students to available, empty seats on buses, will not be initiated prior to October 5. No exceptions.
Please be aware that during September and early October, STOPR priorities are eligible students requiring transportation service, bus
overloads, and route timing adjustments.
Requests for additional or adjusted bus stop locations, route adjustments, and challenges to eligibility status will not be addressed until
late October.
Please be patient. STOPR provides transportation services for approximately 62,000 students to 350 schools on 1,300 buses. This is
accomplished with an operations staff of 15. Every effort is made to complete required adjustments as quickly as possible, but there are
limitations to the volume of changes which can be appropriately communicated and implemented each week.
All transportation operations issues are the responsibility of STOPR and not either Board or individual Trustees.

Greetings from the Eco Team!
The whirlwind of a year is winding down, but not without a last hurrah and effort on behalf
of the Team. Our Eco Fair was a lot of fun and we were very happy to be joined by special
guests Amy Darrell and John MacRae of Eco Caledon, Shannon Carto of the Town of Caledon Environment Department and Alicja Petrucelli, our school nurse from the Region of
Peel. Besides their centres focused on Water Conservation, Idle Free Caledon and the Walk
& Cycle to school STEPS programme, we had many other centres including themes of Endangered Animals, the Milk Bag Bedding project, Terracycling and Vermicomposting. We’d like
to congratulate Steven in Mrs. Cocco’s class for submitting the closest guess as to the number of Recyclable bottles the Eco Team collected from blue boxes throughout Earth Month,
which was 762 bottles. Imagine: in our most Earth conscience month we collected that
many bottles when we KNOW that re-usable bottles is the BEST option. Let’s try harder to
kick the pre-bottled water habit, everyone! We’d also like to congratulate Alina C. for winning our beautiful 2014 rain-barrel, designed by Jennifer (now in Mrs. Pitcher’s Grade 6 class):
she had a very compelling reason for wanting a rain-barrel: her dad wanted one for his garden!!!
In June, we will have our final STEPS draw. We encourage everyone to try walking or cycling
to school especially during the week of June 1 – 6, World Environment Week. We will have a
second sidewalk Anti-Idling campaign on Wednesday June 3rd. We will also be representing
St. John the Baptist school at Caledon Day, on Saturday, June 13th. We hope to see lots of
our families at this great event.
Congratulations finally, to Keanna of Mr. Campanelli’s Grade 5 class for designing and helping
to paint this year’s Rain Barrel. It will be on display at Caledon Day. Also, congratulations to
the Team for the Award winning video on Idle Free Caledon. We really enjoyed our Pizza
lunch with Mayor Allan Thompson and getting recognition for our work at Landmark Cinema’s during the month of May. Imagine, the St. John the Baptist Eco Team was in the Caledon
Enterprise twice this month!!

Year End Mass
Please join our St. John the Baptist Catholic School Community as we celebrate our End of Year Mass on
Wednesday, June 17th, at 9:00 and 10:20 in the school gym.
ROSARY APOSTOLATE - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
For almost 20 years, the Rosary Apostolate has been creating a “positive experience of prayer” which students enjoy
and remember for years to come! Prayer continues to be an integral part of Catholic Education and we are reaching out
to the community to be involved in this Blessed celebration. The Rosary Apostolate is looking for volunteers for the
2015/2016 school year. Please contact Martha Lush for further inquiries. Thank you for your support!

CONGRATULATIONS, FAREWELLS AND WELCOMES
It is that time of the year again where we have to say farewell to those staff that will be leaving our school community. We would
like to begin by thanking and wishing the very best to Mrs. Hamill, Ms. Campanelli, Ms. Peragine, Mrs. S. Viola, Mr. Cosmo, and
Mrs. Modugno for their many years of dedicated service to our students at St. John the Baptist and their positive impact
on the school climate. We wish all of you continued success in your future endeavors.
We would also like to wish Mrs. Green, Mrs. Watson, Mr. DesRoches and Mr. Colucci (Social Worker) many blessings as they
retire from education after years of supporting many of our students in the community! May God Bless you as you begin another
journey of your life.
We welcome back Mrs. Scanlan in September. The St. John the Baptist community is looking forward to having you part of the
school!
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL (Rain or Shine)
The first day of the new school year for students is Tuesday, September 8th, 2015. School begins at 8:45 a.m. Students entering
grade 1, 2 and 3 will go with their parents into the large gym to locate their room number. Parents are asked to accompany
their child to their correct classroom. Teachers will be waiting at the classroom doors. Grade 4, 5 and 6 students
will go to the upper forum, find their name, and proceed directly to their classroom. Grade 7 and 8 students will
go to the intermediate board outside room 201 to see their class placement and make their way to class. This
process was quick and very successful last year. There will be staff throughout the building in florescent orange
vests to help you with any questions you may have.
LAST DAY OF SCHOOL—FRIDAY, JUNE 26TH—HAVE A VERY RESTFUL SUMMER!
