This month we will celebrate the virtue of conscience. A person of conscience allows
prayer and scripture to influence him / her. A person of conscience:

Chooses to do the right thing and feels good about it

Can see how his/her actions may hurt others

Says sorry and tries to make up for mistakes

Keeps promises
Our next Virtues assembly is scheduled for November 24th at 1:35 p.m.

UPHOLDING THE CATHOLIC CODE OF CONDUCT
The Philosophy of Progressive Discipline
Central to the practice of progressive discipline is a caring community that collaborates, and consults in crafting
a comprehensive system of supports that ensures the school’s collective commitment to uphold the standards
of the Catholic Code of Conduct. Progressive discipline exists at all times to support the growth of all students.
It includes a range of proactive strategies that foster Catholic community and aim to prevent problems before
they occur. At the school level, progressive discipline includes classroom management strategies and schoolwide programs that teach pro-social skills, provide support for vulnerable students, promote virtue formation
and foster the Catholic values that are implicit in the Catholic Code of Conduct. If there are bullying or other issues that occur with your child, please contact your child’s teacher immediately so we can
deal with the issue. Thank you.

APPROPRIATE DRESS - COLD
WEATHER
The days are getting colder and pretty soon winter will arrive. We ask that students dress appropriately; i.e. coats, gloves, mitts, boots etc. If
they are dressed warmly, they are better prepared to participate in outdoor activities during
recess and noon hour. Please do not send students who are ill to school. We do not have the
capacity to keep students in at recesses. If your
child comes to school they are expected to go
outside for recess unless indoor recess has
been called.
LUNCH DELIVERIES
When delivering your child’s lunch to school,
please advise your child in advance that you will
be doing so and write his/her first and last name
and the teacher’s full name on the bag. We ask
for all parents to leave the lunch on the lunch
table. Please deliver your child’s lunch by 11:40
as they get delivered at 11:45. A reminder that
FAST FOOD lunches are NOT compliant with
our Anaphylaxis Board policy.
Cross Country at St. John the Baptist School
Our school participated in the Family of Schools Cross-Country meet in Orangeville on October 17.
We had many students place in the top 15 and go to the board final on October 30. Congratulations to the whole team especially Sierra R. and Matthew S. for your first place finish!

REMEMBRANCE DAY LITURGY
Twelve Steps To Increase Your Child’s Math
Achievement And
Make Math Fun!!!
1. Never praise children by telling them they are “smart.”
Remembrance Day this year is Tuesday,
November 11. Our school memorial service
will be conducted in the school on that day at
1:00 p.m. There will only be one liturgy
on this day. Please join us in remembering
those who have made a difference.
HEAD INJURY DURING SCHOOL POLICY
When a student receives an injury/bump to the head
(however minor), it is a Board Policy that we inform
parents. A call will be made to one of the contacts.
This is precautionary only and we ask that you check
your child when they get home for any signs of a
concussion or illness.
2. Never share stories of math failure or dislikes.
3. Always praise mistakes and say that you are pleased your
child is making them.
4. Encourage children to work on problems that are challenging for them, so they can make mistakes.
5. When you help your children, do not lead them through work
step by step, as this takes away important learning opportunities for them.
6. Encourage drawing out their answers with pictures, numbers, and words whenever you can.
7. Encourage students to make sense of math at all times.
8. Encourage students to think flexibly about numbers.
HEAD INJURY OR CONCUSSION OUTSIDE
OF SCHOOL
Parents/guardians are required to inform school administration in the event of any serious injury to the
head or concussion sustained outside of school. Parents/guardians will then be provided with a form that
ensures the students have been seen by a doctor.
Once this form is completed, the student will then be
able to return to school. This may require the development of a plan to facilitate returning to the classroom. Thank you for your cooperation.

Does Your Child Arrive on Time???
Reminders and Resources: Cold and Flu Season
As cold and flu season approaches, the Dufferin-Peel
Catholic District School Board continues to be vigilant in
ensuring that our schools are clean and that our school
communities are educated regarding good hand hygiene
and cough etiquette. These practices are promoted on an
ongoing basis, but as the prevalence of colds and flu increases, our board increases the cleaning of contact surfaces, as well as reminds schools to review cold and flu
prevention with students and staff. Many resources are
utilized from our regional health units.
A reminder, as well, that communicable diseases can be
contracted in public places throughout the year. For example, cold-related viruses, such as Enterovirus, are
transferred from person to person through hand contact. Cold and flu viruses typically peak from December
through February, but can start as early as October.
Late IS anytime after 8:40
a.m.

Students who arrive at school late are out of sorts and
rushed into beginning their day.

Students that are late disturb the class and interrupt lessons!

It places them in a rushed frame of mind for the remainder
of the day. A late arrival for your child is not healthy!

Creating regular routines at home assists children to get to
school on time and to come prepared. An established bedtime and morning routine will help your family arrive on
time.

Students who arrive at school late lose out on time to socialize and greet their peers.
Regional Health Unit Resources
Please assist us by reviewing good hand washing procedures, as well as other preventative measures, as outlined in the various Peel Health and Wellington Dufferin
Guelph (WDG) resources available to you through their
websites. As always, children who are unwell, should be
kept at home.
Flu Clinics
Also available on the Peel Health and WDG websites, are
the schedules of local Flu Clinics.
For more information, visit the health unit websites:
Peel Health website: http://www.peelregion.ca/health
Your Child Should Line Up
With Their Class and
Enter With their Line.......

Intermediate students who are continually late run the risk
of establishing this as a habit! Upon their entrance to high
school, this habit could possibly result in the loss of their
first period credit!
Consider: Have your children get their school items
(homework, shoes, and lunch) ready the night before. Place their
bags at the door ready for a quick morning departure!
Please ensure that your child is on-time for school.

No Dogs on School Property
Another reminder to our parents/guardians that dogs
are NOT permitted on school property for the safety of
our students. This continues to be a problem at our
school. We ask those parents/guardians with dogs to
please leave your dog at home and not bring them to
our school. Thank you.
SMOKE-FREE ONTARIO ACT
The Smoke-Free Ontario Act came into force on May 21, 2006.
Smoking is prohibited in public schools (including the grounds).
Also, adults may not smoke in a car with a passenger under
sixteen. The driver can be fined $250.
FACTS:
$365 Fine for sharing, supplying or selling tobacco to anyone
under 19
$305 Fine for smoking or holding lit tobacco on
school property.

SOFTBALL TEAMS!!!
Congratulations to our junior and intermediate softball
teams who played in our family of schools tournament at
the beginning of October. Both teams demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and advanced all the way to the
semifinals. Fun was had by all and their hard work and
practice paid off. A big thank you to our parents who
came out to support the students and help with driving.
Thank you to coaches
Mrs. Hamill and Ms.
Morizio.

Our 2014 Operation Christmas Child initiative “kick off”
will be held soon. Families are encouraged to participate in this very worthwhile charitable initiative during
the upcoming Advent season. Operation Christmas
Child boxes are available at our school library. Please
look for a detailed information letter regarding this
project, to be sent home soon. Sincere thanks are
extended to Mr. Graham for, once again, coordinating
this annual project. As shipping costs are very expensive, Samaritan's Purse asks that you include a $7 donation with each box. Please make these cheques out
to Samaritan's Purse, using the envelope provided. As
well, we have a need of transportation from the school
to the Operation Christmas Child Warehouse. If you'd
like to donate for this purpose, please makes your
cheque out to St. John the Baptist School. This will occur in mid November—more information to follow.
Boxes are due November 28, 2014

--------------------------------------------------------------------------“WEDNESDAY’S” WALK TO SCHOOL”
We are encouraging all students to walk to school on
“Wednesday’s” as part of our Healthy Schools initiative!
Walk, bike, skip or hop to school…but don’t drive!
Parking for Parents/Visitors
A reminder to our parents and visitors that parking is available at the front and side lot (by the park) of the school.
Please respect our “Staff Only” parking lot at the side of the
building and please DO NOT park in this lot. Also, in the
interest of student safety we do not want cars coming and
going throughout the day through this lot as it is parallel to
our crosswalk where our students cross to get to school.
Please do not remove the pylons that are set out at
the end of the day. They are there for student safety.
Thank you.
