God has given us many guidelines and examples of how to live our lives. He sent his Son Jesus to make sure we could see what life could be like. Jesus made one lesson clear above all other lessons-the lesson to love. Love is not about us-it is about forgetting ourselves and looking out for the good of others. That’s what Jesus did-he forgot about himself on purpose. He chose to give up his life for the good of others. Becoming a truly loving person is challenging. It takes prayer and concentration to get used to making little sacrifices for the good of others. Making little sacrifices on purpose so that others will have a bit of food, shelter, peace, fun and friendship. Through prayer, we can get better at showing love to everyone we meet. The grade six students will wr ite the test fr om May 25—31 and grade three students will wr ite from June 1—8. We ask that school day appointments for Grade 3 & 6 students be avoided. The results of these tests will be received in the fall of 2016. For parents interested in more information about these assessments, there is a website made available by the province, www.eqao.com. The website has parent resources, samples of the assessment questions for providing practice and support for your child and other related information. EQAO Parent tips: Strategies for Success Stay positive Here are a few things you can do to help your child stay positive about the test: Celebrate your child's successes and efforts each day. Limit your child’s absences from school. Schedule appointments at times other than the assessment period. Ensure that your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a healthy breakfast and lunch. Make sure that your child arrives at school on time. Speak positively about the test. Say things like, "Try your best." Continue regularly scheduled extra-curricular activities. Literacy Tips Stop and talk about the book. Make predictions, talk about new words or ask questions. Ask your child to retell the story as he remembers it. Have your child relate the story to her/his own experiences (e.g., What does that remind you of?). Encourage your child to read factual texts as well as fiction. Let your kids see you as a reader. Show ways you use writing in everyday life. Encourage your child to write for many different purposes (lists, recipes, letters, research reports, journals, stories, instructions). Focus on your child’s strengths, learning to write well is a difficult process. Encourage risk-taking. Praise his/her attempts. Use math daily Encourage the use of manipulatives (counters, shapes, etc. to help show his/her thinking). Help your child to see practical uses for math (e.g., cooking, building, planning, shopping, measuring, estimating). Encourage your child to estimate first, then figure it out. Encourage your child to problem-solve. Sometimes there is more than one right answer! Encourage your child to communicate how the problem was solved (use numbers, pictures, words to explain). Extra Clothes Due to the field conditions, an extra set of clothes at school is a great idea in case of slips/falls. Please remind your child to bring a pair of indoor shoes to school, and label the shoes for our primary students. Running shoes are preferred because they are safe and can also be used for gym. We appreciate your continued support Lakeview Library April Programs at Lakeview Library 1110 Atwater Ave 905 615-4805 For more information, please contact Julie Sandercock @ 905 615-4805 ext 2636 or email at Julie.Sandercock@mississauga.ca Did you know that the library has classes for infants, school aged children, families and adults? VOLUME 1, ISSUE 8 PAGE 5 Internet Safety Last Fall, we had our Police Presentations on Community Helpers, Stranger Danger, Bullying and Cyberbullying. Junior and Intermediate students learned about internet safety and reviewed the serious consequences of misusing the internet. We are asking all parents to be aware of what their children are doing on the internet and make sure their sons’ and daughters’ activities on the internet are completely appropriate. It would be helpful to know your child’s email address, log on names and passwords. Make regular checks, look at the computer screen and make sure the computer is set up in an area that is frequently supervised by an adult. Safe Play All students are consistently reminded of the safe play expectations within the school and outside. Body contact activities, shoving and pushing are not acceptable behaviours at school. We applaud those who play appropriately and safely. Safe play is everyone’s business. Safety and Behaviour on School Buses 1. School buses are an extension of the school and students will be responsible to their school principal for discipline as if they were in a school building. 2. Students must follow instructions of the bus drivers. Misbehaviour on school buses will be reported to the principal and such misbehaviour could result in suspension of riding privileges. 3. Passenger conduct must be orderly at all times so as to provide a safe environment. 4. Accordingly, the following rules will be strictly enforced: a. There is to be no moving around on the buses while in motion. Students are to remain in their seats until the bus comes to a complete stop. b. Students shall take seats assigned to them by the bus driver when told to do so. c. Students are not to put their heads or arms out of open windows. d. Eating or drinking on the bus is not permitted. e. Students are to refrain from throwing articles and must not leave garbage on the bus. f. While talking among students is permitted, there is to be no undue noise. g. Profanity will not be permitted. h. No electronic devices should be used on the bus. i. Vandalism of bus seats, etc. is prohibited. 5. Students must line up for the bus as instructed by the driver or school personnel, prior to boarding the bus. Pushing or shoving will not be permitted. 6. Students will be picked up or let off at designated school bus stops only. 7. Students crossing the road must do so at a safe distance in front of the bus while the loading lights are operating. Please review these rules with your child(ren) . Catholic Education Week – May 1-6, 2016 Theme: Catholic Education: Opening Doors of Mercy “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.” – Matthew 5:7 The sub-themes for Catholic Education Week 2016 are as follows: 1. Mercy that Welcomes Some of the Activities occurring during this week 2. Mercy that Loves are: School Mass, Loretta Penny Presentation 3. Mercy that Forgives about respecting our Environment and Peoples, and 4. Mercy that Lives the Gospel Welcome to Kindergarten 5. Mercy that Rejoices Catholic Education Week begins on a Sunday to highlight the partnership that remains the foundation of Catholic education between our Catholic schools and local Catholic parishes. Throughout Catholic Education Week, we ask you to reflect on the significance of Catholic education’s presence and contribution in our Church, and in our society. We invite all members of our community, to participate in the celebrations and activities that will mark the celebration of Catholic Education Week 2016 in our schools. For more information about Catholic Education Week and to access OCSTA Resources, visit the OCSTA website. Combined Classes Combined classes have become a necessary reality at our school. This is a reality in many schools in Mississauga. As teachers prepare class lists they consider many factors, such as the learning styles of students, a balance of abilities and class culture. Within Ontario all schools are bound by a teacher pupil ratio. This is particularly evident as we strive to meet the hard cap of 20:1 in the primary grades. Until we finalize our enrolment in September, all class arrangements and teacher placements will be tentative. School Organization for September 2016 The staff of St. Dominic will meet over the next few weeks to discuss class placements for September 2016. When determining placement, some of the criteria we consider are: academic ability, work habits, study skills, maturity, social factors and placement history. Due to our size, we are limited in our placement options. Since you know your child best, we always appreciate your input concerning any special needs your child(ren) may have. With this in mind, we ask that if you have feedback for us, please provide it in writing. We ask that you submit your feedback to the principal by Friday April 8, 2016. In your letter please include your child’s strengths, needs and a description of their learning style including the type of learning environment that would provide your child with the most success. Please do not make specific requests for a teacher as current and tentative assignments may change between now and September. There is no guarantee that requests will be fulfilled, but all will be considered. When staff meet they will take into consideration the overall needs of the students in relation to the make-up of the class. They will also take into consideration any parental feedback they have received. It is not always possible, given the variables that go into devising a class, to accommodate all parental requests. Whenever possible we will meet requests, but the final decision rests with the principal and the teaching staff.
