March Break –March 14-18, 2016 I hope everyone has a safe and happy March Break. Good Friday (March 25) and Easter Monday (March 28) no school St. Dominic Staff wish all our families a Blessed and Happy Easter Dear Parents/Guardians Easter is fast approaching. Easter celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus after his death. The Easter egg is a symbol that originated amongst the Early Christians of Mesopotamia who stained eggs red in memory of the blood of Christ. In 1610AD the Christian Church officially adopted the custom regarding eggs as a symbol of the resurrection, with Pope Paul V proclaiming the prayer: “Bless, O Lord! We beseech thee, this thy creature of eggs, that it may become a wholesome sustenance to thy faithful servants, eating it in thankfulness to thee on account of the resurrection of Our Lord!” Holy Week began on Palm Sunday, March 20, 2016. During this week, all classes will have the opportunity to reflect solemnly on the Lord’s Passion as they are guided through a liturgy and the Stations of the Cross, organized by Mr. Berce, Mrs. White, Mrs. deSouza, Mrs. Pascolo and re-acted by the Grade 7/8 students. All parents are welcome to come and join us on March 24 at 12:45 p.m. in the gym. Also our Easter school mass will be on Wednesday, March 30 at 9:15 with Queen of Heaven School at St. Dominic Parish. Please come and join us for this community mass, if you are able to. Easter is time to renew our Baptismal vows and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, our Saviour. As we prepare, let us remember to spend time praying with our family, thanking God for all the blessings He has bestowed upon us. May the Risen Lord bless you and your family over this Easter season. Every person in our lives carries the Spirit of God and so every person is our brother or sister through Jesus Christ. As brothers and sisters who share one Holy Spirit, we are all valuable to God. We all deserve to be shown concern for our welfare and our feelings. We have all been given the fruit of the Spirit called kindness. Kindness can only be seen through actions. It’s not enough to say. Our Catholic School Heritage The history of Catholic schools in Ontario since 1841 is one of dedication and perseverance in the face of financial hardship and adversity. Due to the commitment of the religious teaching Orders, the bishops and priests, the teachers, parents, and students, our forebears have handed to us a great gift – a fully funded public Catholic school system. The courts of Ontario and Canada have reinforced the rights of the Catholic school system with a number of judgments which affirmed the rights of separate school boards to: (a) have their guaranteed powers in the Separate School Act of 1863 improved, (b) receive equitable funding, (c) prefer Catholics when hiring elementary and secondary school teachers, (d) have their own buildings, (e) have an exclusive Catholic school community. The integration of religious truths and values with life is one of the most significant elements that distinguish the Catholic school from other schools. This is a matter of crucial importance today in view of contemporary trends and pressures to compartmentalize life and learning and to isolate the religious dimension of existence from other areas of human life. The courts have recognized, over the years, that Catholic education is not a subject but rather a way to view the world that speaks to the interrelationship between faith, knowledge and action. The Catholic school is a unique setting within which this ideal can be realized in the lives of Catholic children and young people. In our Catholic schools this reality can and is lived out. School Lockdown Procedures It is a policy of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board that all schools conduct a practice of “Lockdown Procedures and/or Hold and Secure” at least twice a year. The procedure will be initiated should an emergency exist on school property or in the surrounding neighborhood. Listed below are the procedures that our students follow. Upon hearing the announcement, “Initiate Lockdown Procedures”: The lockdown bell sequence will be repeatedly rung. All students and staff inside the building will remain in their classroom. Students in the hallway will go to the closest classroom Students in classrooms will remain in their locked classroom, in an area that is out of sightline of windows and doors All students and staff who are outside the building are to move quickly to our evacuation site. The announcement, “Lockdown Procedures Complete”, will indicate the completion of the drill. O Nutrition Nuggets: Hide the Veggies Pushing them to one side, feeding them to the dog under the table, spitting them out altogether-getting your kids to eat veggies is one of the most common exercises to futility that I hear from parents. Many children don’t like vegetables (many adults as well), and some simply refuse to eat them. This is something that usually changes over time but in the meantime, what can you do to get more of those nutrient-rich vegetables into your children without causing World War III? Here are some tips: 1. Always set a good example. If your child sees you eating vegetables, he or she will be much more likely to want to eat vegetables too. Temper your temptation to react yourself to those mushrooms that disgust you in front of your children. This will reduce the chance your children will simply follow in your footsteps and despise them too, without even giving them a fair chance. 2. Plate the vegetables. Present vegetables with your child’s meal, even if you are sure he or she will probably refuse them. The more your child sees vegetables as part of their meals and sees other members of the family eat them, the more likely he or she will get used to them, or at least want to try one bite. 3. Make a game out of eating vegetables, “Let’s find the best tasting veggies by sampling them!” 4. Use a system such as a star calendar that rewards your child with a star when the child eats all the vegetables on the plate. When your child reaches a certain number of stars at the end of the month, reward him or her with something fun, like a night at the movies or dinner at his or her favourite restaurant. 5. Allow your child to help prepare the vegetables. For instance, have your child wash the lettuce or scoop the peas. At the supermarket, let your child choose which vegetables the family will eat on a given night. Research shows that allowing your children to participate in meal preparation and to make their OWN decisions on what veggies they will eat empowers them to make healthy choices throughout their lives. 6. Cut the vegetables into fun shapes. 7. Hide veggies in tomato sauce, pizza, casseroles, smoothies, hamburgers, soup etc.. Serve them cooked and uncooked. 8. Don’t ever force your children to eat everything on their plate. You can encourage it, and reward it, however forcing children to sit and finish everything has been well proven to contribute to the development of future food-related issues and disordered eating. 9. Don’t give up. Your child's taste buds are different from an adult’s, and eventually, your child will adjust and enjoy vegetables as much as you do. Have patience. Good eating habits are not learned overnight. “Nutrition Nuggets” is written by Andrea Olynyk, Registered Dietitian and Professor of Nutrition at the University of Guelph Dates to Remember March 3 March 8 March 14-18 Go Transit Safety Presentations –a.m. Grade 7&8 Presentation at St. Paul S.S.
