In Flanders Fields
by John McCrae, May 1915
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

Pastor: Fr. Philip Jones
The mission of the St.
Dominic School
Community is to promote
and foster Catholic
attitudes, values, and beliefs
in a supportive and caring
learning environment.
Together with dignity and
respect, we strive to inspire
life-long learning and
encourage students to
attain their full potential as
Christians.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset
glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we
lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies
grow
In Flanders fields.

Thank you to the St. Dominic School Community
for supporting the Halloween Dance-a-thon. This
N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 5
fundraiser was organized
by the School Council
and we very much appreciate their efforts. The
money raised will help to purchase materials for
the school, provide presentations for the students,
fund the Gr. 8 Graduation and other events which
will enrich the educational experience of the students at St. Dominic School. This year the staff
and students continue to be committed to promoting the message of social justice, anti-bullying
and protecting our environment through activities
such as P.A.L.S., police presentations, an Eco
Student Team, Youth Faith Ambassadors just to
list a few. Our outreach activities include Food
Drives, Free the Children, Angels on the Tree,
volunteering at Dr. Simone’s food warehouse,
supporting Share Life and much more. This year
we will continue to promote the WITS program
and Constable Dennis, our NPU officer help to
initiate this program. Staff and students work together to make St. Dominic a safer place. Rather
than concentrating solely on correcting the behavior of those who bully, we focus on influencing the
attitudes of all parties. Those who are bullied and
bystanders can learn to address the situation before they result in negative actions. Last year we
were certified as an Eco school and received a
Gold rating. The Eco Team is planning various
activities through the year and are striving to receive a platinum rating this year.
Each month our school community
meets, to celebrate and discuss the month’s virtue. At these assemblies various teachers lead
students in discussions and presentations that
outline the importance of monthly virtues. Each
month, we will continue to recognize three students per class who through their actions have
demonstrated the virtue as well as students who
represent St. Dominic in school teams or events.
Beginning this month, we will also be having
WITS student leaders during these assemblies
perform drama presentations and lead discussions to illustrate strategies to use when faced
with conflict or bullying. These are some of the
ways we are promoting the virtues as well as using proactive approaches to sustain our Culture of
Peace. Parents are always invited to these virtue
assemblies.

Virtue of the Month– Conscience
This month we will focus on the virtue of Conscience
God has given us the ability to know the right and decent way to act and then to act that way. We
trust that the common Spirit we share inspires us and guides us to make good decisions if we allow
our conscience to be well-formed.
A person of conscience allows prayer and scripture to influence him/her.
A person of conscience…
 Chooses to do the “right thing” and feels good about it
 Can see how his/her actions may hurt others
 Admits his/her wrong-doing and feels badly
 Says sorry and tries to make up for mistakes
 Keeps promises

Remembrance Day
On November 11th, Canadians all across the country stop and remember the men, women,
and children who were killed in wars. There are parades and memorial services. Everyone
stands in silence as they remember the more than 100, 000 brave Canadians who were killed.
World War One Armistice was signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11 month and
that is why November 11th is called Remembrance Day. On November 2, students can purchase a poppy supplied by the Royal Canadian Legion for a small donation to help support our
veterans. Poppies will be stored at the office. We will also be having a Remembrance Day
reflection at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11th in the school gym. Parents are welcome to attend.

Visitors
Anyone entering the school must report in at the office first. The school is a ver y busy place and we have many visitor s/
parents dropping in for a variety of reasons. To ensure we maintain the integrity of the classroom program by avoiding interruptions, and for the safety of our students, all visitors must come to the office. We ask that you also convey this information to older
brothers and sisters of our students. This way we know that anyone in the halls or in the school yard is an authorized visitor. All
students leaving the school early will be released through the front office as they must sign out. If your child arrives late we ask
you to NOT accompany them to class.
Safety Issues
Parents please remember that students are not to be in the school yard before 8:15 a.m. because we have no teacher supervision until 8:15 a.m.
Parents it has come to our attention that some of the students do not follow the rules of the crossing guard when coming to
school. Parents please remind your child(ren) to listen to the crossing guard. It is for their own safety

Reminders and Resources: Cold and Flu Season
As cold and flu season approaches, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board continues to be vigilant in
ensuring that our schools are clean and that our school communities are educated regarding good hand hygiene
and cough etiquette. These practices are promoted on an ongoing basis, but as the prevalence of colds and flu increases the cleaning of contact surfaces, as well as reminds school to review cold and flu prevention with students and staff. Many resources are
utilized from our regional health units.
As a reminder, as well, that communicable diseases can be contracted in public places throughout the year. For example, cold related viruses, such as Enterovirus, as transferred from person to person through hand contact. Cold and flu viruses typically peak
from December through February, but can start as early as October.
Regional Health Unit Resources
Please assist us as a school by reviewing good hand washing procedures with your children, as well as other preventative
measures, as outlined in the various Peel Health re-sources available to you through its website. As always, children who are unwell, should be kept at home.
Flu Clinics
Also available on the Peel Health website, are the schedules of local Flu Clinics.
For more information, visit the health unit website: http://www.peelregion.ca/health
Direct links to the above information can be found in the Parent Section of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board Website at www.dpcdsb.org
WEATHER
Weather is very unpredictable in the Fall. The news indicates snow is right around the corner. Please send your child wearing layers that
can be removed or added to depending on the weather. Please ensure that children are prepared every day with hats, coats, mitts, and
boots. Ensure your child practices zipping, buttoning etc. so they can get ready independently to go outside. Continue to send rainwear
on wet days. An extra set of clothes at school is a great idea in case of slips/falls. Please remind your child to bring a pair of indoor
shoes to school, and label the shoes for our pr imar y students. Running shoes ar e pr efer r ed because they ar e safe and can also be used for
gym. We appreciate your continued support!
