Review of minutes from January 29, 2015 meeting Tony Anderson

Yoshiko requested a correction to the spelling of the word separately under Action Item 2. Minutes approved with spelling correction.

2.

Institution-Set Standards Wade Grant

Wade informed the council in regards to the Institution-Set Standards. He asked the council to review the documents located on the Council website. The ACCJC require set standards. The standards task force was formed to accomplish these requirements. The task force conducted an outreach survey with different colleges to review their standards and assess the standards for our college. The task force took the recent 5 year average and reduced it by 5%. The task force will be updating their standards for transfers. The task force used four measures: Course completions, course retention, certificates, and degrees. This is a requirement from the

ACCJC.

This item has been approved by the council.

INFORMATION/DISCUSSION/PRESENTATIONS

1.

Panther Prep Update Sara Sanchez

Sara is facilitating the preparation for Panther Day. Sara passed out handouts concerning the 7 Steps to

Success and a Panther Prep Day 2015 flyer. The goal is to have high school seniors prepared and ready for classes in the Fall 2015 semester. Fall 2014 semester began application the application process for high school students. This Spring they are initiating online orientation and assessment. On Panther Prep day, seniors must have completed steps 1-3 before attending the Panther Prep Day. Panther Prep Day will be held on Friday, May

1, 2015 at the King City Center and on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at the Main Campus. On these days, high school students will meet with a counselor and register for classes. Final deadline for seniors to complete the process is April 17 th for acceptance to the Panther Prep Day. Soledad, Gonzales and King City high schools will be attending the Friday event at the King City Center. Transportation will be provided for the South County students. They are anticipating approximately 800 attendees at the Main campus. They will be having two sessions, one in the morning and another in the afternoon with a lunch break in between and assisting 400 students each session. They are planning a parent component as well. Manuel Bersamin is assisting in the planning of the parent orientation.

Hartnell College Men of Color Mentoring Program

The event was held on February 19 th

. This was a first meeting where mentors were able to meet mentees.

There are 35 mentors and 42 student mentees. The next activity will be where mentors are able to have additional time to interact with their mentee on March 11 th 5pm-7pm. On March 18th, mentees will tour Fresno

State and Fresno Pacific with their mentors. Tony informed they are searching for volunteers to help raise additional funds for events and activities. Their goal is to help students with the journey of going through college. Tony informed the council they are in need of a few more mentors, please contact him if you are interested in becoming a mentor.

Accreditation Update Kathy Mendelsohn

Kathy informed the Council the accreditation report is due in March to ACCJC. The ACCJC Visting Team will be on campus April 10 th . The report went to the academic senate on February 25 th for a second reading. Kathy was involved in Recommendation 4 and 5. Recommendation 4 pertains to courses, programs, outcomes and institutional outcomes. Recommendation 5 involved the library and counseling areas. The ACCJC wants to ensure students at all Hartnell College campuses are receiving the same library, counseling and student support services. The process for reserving rooms in the Library will be changing. They will be removing the monitors outside each room. Rooms cannot be reserved for more than 2 weeks at a time. Anyone making room reservations after spring break will be deleted. They will be adding TV monitors for students to view which rooms are available. Students will be able to reserve rooms from their phone or from a kiosk in the library. The library will be piloting an online library orientation this Spring. It will be available to students through Etudes.

Between Spring and Summer session they will be installing new security Gates in the library. All the recommendations in the Accreditation report have been satisfied. The college addressed the planning agendas in the report. The report is available for review on the Student Affairs Council webpage.

BP/AP 3900: Speech, Time, Place, and Manner Tony Anderson

This policy will increase the places students can speak. Tony requested the council to review the AP and BP that is posted on the Student Affairs Council website. This will be coming back the council as an action item at the next meeting.

OTHER ITEMS/BRIEF ANNOUNCEMENTS

1.

Cash for College Follow-Up from 2/21 event Mary Dominguez

The annual cash for college event assist students in applying for FAFSA. There were 129 students that attended the event. It was co-sponsored with Assembly member Luis Alejo’s office who publicized the event. Workshops
