Love (EASTER)
This month we will celebrate Easter and LOVE.
Jesus made one lesson clear above all other lessons –
the lesson to love. Love is not about us – it is about
forgetting ourselves and looking out for the good of the
other. That’s what Jesus did – he forgot about himself
on purpose. He chose to give up his life for the good of
others – us!
Becoming a truly loving person is challenging. It takes
prayer and concentration to get used to making little
sacrifices for the good of others. Making little sacrifices
on purpose so that others will have a bit of food, a bit of
shelter, a bit of peace, a bit of quiet, a bit of fun, a bit of
friendship.
Through prayer and concentration, we can get better at
showing love to everyone we meet.

History tells us that Lent was not only to be a
time of fasting and abstinence (meat was
only to be eaten on Sundays) but all were
directed to live the forty days in deep
prayer, penitence and meditation.
No parties were to be celebrated. No social
activities were to be scheduled. For 40 days
and nights, all but the most essential activity
was to be stopped. Even little children were
expected to make an effort not to enjoy life too
much during Lent.
Today Lent has still a strong spiritual
meaning in that we are called to do penance,
to repent for our sins, to change our hearts for
the better, to think more to our spiritual life and
to the eternal life.
No question there is room, even today, for
giving up certain things; but the most important
work during Lent is, surely, to give up sin and
to spend more time in prayer, in reading the
Holy Scriptures, in becoming more Christ-like
people, we rise with Jesus to a new life – the
life of grace.
Let’s make Lent a time of quiet
togetherness for family (turn off the T.V. a
day a week etc.), prayer, fasting, and good
works. Lent is the season in which we prepare
joyfully for the mystery of Easter with minds
and hearts renewed.
During Lent, the community of faith is blessed
with a spirit of loving reverence for God and of
willing service to neighbour.
The season of Lent begins on Ash
Wednesday (March 20) and concludes before
the evening mass of the Lord’s Supper on
Holy Thursday.
EASTER 2016

CLASS LIST FOR SEPTEMBER 2016
Staff will meet in May to organize class lists for
September 2016. If there are any special
learning needs your child has that you feel we
should know when making up classes, please
do so in writing to the principal by April 29th.
Letters that list a request for a specific
teacher will not be considered. Please limit
comments to specific learning styles.
Requests for your child to be placed with a
“friend” will not be considered. If you feel your
child has an ongoing conflict with another child,
please write us a letter and we will do our best
to separate them. All staff work hard to balance
class lists by abilities, gender and learning
style. Please bear in mind that small primary
classes (max 20) often result in combined
classes throughout the school. These are a
fact of life that children will have to experience
from time to time. Requests for students not to
be placed in a combined grade will not be
considered.
PLASP SCHOOL PROGRAMS
PLASP’s award winning, licensed BEFORE
and AFTER school programs is are available at
Holy Cross. The BEFORE school program
begins at 7:30 a.m. 8:15 a.m. and includes a
nutritious breakfast daily. Visit www.plasp.com
to register your child today.

OUR LENTEN FOOD DRIVE
As we continue to journey through Lent and
engage in acts of alms giving, Holy Cross will
be participating in a Food Drive, where all
proceeds will go to St. Vincent de Paul. Please
bring in your food donations from Monday,
March 7 – Wednesday, March 23, 2016.
SCHOOL DRESS CODE UPDATE
The surveys recently sent out to the Holy
Cross School community in regards to the
introduction of a “School Dress Code” have
resulted in a 63% in favour of a dress code.
This percent falls 12% short of the school
mandated 75% to implement dress code.
Therefore we CANNOT proceed with a
dress code for September 2016. Thank you
to all who responded. Your participation is
greatly appreciated.

COLD WEATHER DRESS
As the weather continues to be cold, we ask
that students prepare properly for
outdoor play. This includes gloves,
hats, scarves, jackets and boots.
School board and Peel Health
guidelines indicate that students
will generally be outside for recess
when temperatures do not fall below –25
degrees Celsius, with the wind chill. As such,
appropriate clothing is essential. Please note
that students should have indoor shoes during
the winter months. Thank you in advance for
your continued support and cooperation.
KISS ‘N RIDE
Of paramount importance at
Holy Cross Catholic School is
your child’s safety. It is important that all traffic
follow a few simple rules, which will help
alleviate any difficulties in the school driveway.
 All parents should use the Kiss ‘N Ride
lane if they are dropping off their child
 No parents should leave their cars
parked in front of the school unless it is
in a designated parking spot
 No vehicle should be left parked in the
Kiss ‘N’ Ride lane
 No vehicle should be parked in the
Kindergarten Drop off Area or in front of
the school
 No double parking in the driveway is
acceptable
 If you wish to park and walk your child to
school, please make use of the two
parking lots located next to our
driveways
 Under NO circumstances should
vehicles be backing up or going the
wrong way
 NO parking in the BUS ROUTE
Please be advised that cars parked in the Kiss
‘N’ Ride lanes are liable for ticketing by the
parking authority of Mississauga.
Please
understand that Holy Cross Catholic School
will not be responsible for fines issued to
drivers for any infractions of the above
directives. Cars have recently been ticketed
for parking in these areas.
HEALTHY SCHOOL INITIATIVE
The Health Committee of Holy Cross in
cooperation with Food Share is pleased to
announce that Holy Cross School will be
participating in “The Big Crunch”. The Great
Big Crunch is a special day of good food
education, ending with a massive,
synchronized bite into a crunchy apple to
celebrate.
Holy Cross School will be collectively
crunching on Thursday, March 10 at 2:30pm.
This event celebrates Nutrition Month,
promotes and celebrates healthy snacking,
highlights availability of local produce all year
round and uses fruits as the centrepiece for
activities on tasting, nutrition and more!
A big Thank You to FreshCo. (at Westwood
Mall) and the Knights of Columbus for
providing Holy Cross School with crunchy
apples.
JUNIOR BASKETBALL
On February 23rd our junior boys and girls
basketball teams competed in the annual
BEACON tournament at St. Marguerite
d’Youville Secondary School. Both teams
easily cruised to victory in their first games, by
playing excellent zone team defence and
moving the ball on offence. Both teams proved
that willpower and determination are more
valuable than winning. Congratulations for a
wonderful season: Adowa, Emily, Madelene,
Christeen, Audrey, Riley, Anquelique, Mikayla,
Natalie, Charlotte, Latavia, Kahleo, Dylanno,
