COM COURSE LEVEL OUTCOMES 1 SUBJECT COURSE # STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Given a topic, students will be able to plan, revise and present an extemporaneous and/or impromptu speech utilizing limited notation and minimized preparation time. COM 1 For an informative speaking situation, the student will be able to: assess the audience using appropriate communication theory, develop a topic that meets the needs of the audience and the speaker, organize and develop the speech, preform the speech to meet the needs of the environment and audience and evaluate the speaking performance. For a persuasive speaking situation, the student will be able to complete all of the above outcomes and be able to: develop and defend a claim, research and organize supporting warrants for the claim, and identify the necessary evidence for the warrants that support the claim. Students will be able to synthesize and evaluate effects of current events and create both a written and oral analysis. COM 20 Using reasoning skills and critical thinking capabilities, students will be able to create an argument defending a position. Applying reasoning and persuasive techniques, students will be able to evaluate an opposing argument form a classmate/s, recognize logical fallacies, and create refutation. Given a specific communication event, the student will be able to identify the communication theory that best fits the event and develop strategies to enhance the communication between the participants . COM 3 Given a specific communication theory(interpersonal, small group, public or mass media), the student will be able to research, organize, and write a paper concerning the development and implementation of that theory and what training or experiences would be necessary to use the theory effectively. Students will research, design and present informative and persuasive speeches. COM 35 Students will demonstrate an understanding of the history and development of the field of intercultural communication and recall important facts associated with the discipline. COM COURSE LEVEL OUTCOMES 2 Students will be able to evaluate socio-cultural characteristics and patterns, predicting the influence on human perception and communication. Students will develop communication skills to interact with other cultures in a positive fashion and integrate course content in crosscultural exchanges. Students will memorize tenets of effective communication in the workplace, demonstrating understanding by applying principles to hypothetical scenarios. Students will research and evaluate current research to design a final project analyzing current communication issues in organizations. COM 5 In a speaking situation, the student will be able to assess the audience using appropriate communication theory, develop a topic that meets the needs of the audience and the speaker, organize and develop the presentation, perform the presentation to meet the needs of the environment and audience and evaluate the speaking performance. Given a small group situation, the student will be able to develop an agenda, organize the committee, call the committee, lead the committee through the agenda and manage the minutes of the committee meeting. Given a dyadic conversation example, the student will apply applicable communication models. COM 8 Given a conflict management scenario, the student will analyze the scenario and identify specific conflict management techniques that enhance communication.
