Aaron Winkle, Associate Chaplain of Calvin College, opened our meeting with a meditation on the faithfulness of God and how we set up memorials to events which remind us of that faithfulness. John Witvliet, Director of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, led us through the significant worship changes and continuities which have occurred in the last ten years. He closed by citing the desire of young people today to return to traditional worship styles. Frank Calsbeek presented the Distinguished Service Awards to Phyllis Van Andel and Jim Gunn. Phyllis had a very visible role in CALL’s development as the long time editor of the CALLNews and also as one of the course instructors. Jim has had and continues to have a vital role in assigning and arranging with the college all of the rooms for the courses. Wally Bratt, chairman of the curriculum committee, says that Jim provides invaluable assistance in making the courses successful. The business meeting was brief and to the point. We elected two new members to the board, Ken Huisman and Gordon Van Harn. Two current board members were reelected, Corrine Kass and Jeanette Sprik. The CALL brass ensemble again entertained us with their fine rendition of numerous numbers, including accompanying us in the doxology at the end of the meeting. The board also met a couple of days before the luncheon. The board set the date for the annual luncheon for next year to be held on Wednesday, May 25, 2011. We also acknowledged the very attractive catalogue highlighting Peter De Boer’s fine work on the summer program. Some of those classes are already filled, but not all. Be sure to call the office for any you might want to take.
