Our first day was spent at Elim Christian Services. We were met by Dr. William Lodewyk, the Elim director, who extended greetings and warmly welcomed us. Several members of his staff joined him and together they gave us a gripping introduction to the heartwarming and challenging ministry of Elim Christian Services. The highlight of the day was working side by side with some of the clients of Elim. They are God's children who are either physically or mentally challenged. As we worked together, one on one, making school packets for the children in Haiti and packaging flower seeds, we experienced the true meaning of "blessed." Their eyes sparkled as we listened and spent time with them - they were blessed. We too were blessed, many of us with tears in our eyes, as we shared our lives with them. We were blessed by the stories of two clients who were able to go with their parents and Elim staff on a mission trip to Honduras. Their parents then shared their hearts with us and the blessing it was to them that their mentally challenged adult children were used by God. We will forever be "blessed" by the mother of the young man. She shared, “Stephen has been a blessing to us and to others and I wouldn't exchange him for anyone else.” We were "blessed." We were thrilled to present checks totalling $800 to Elim for the making of "school packets" by the Elim clients for the needy school children in Haiti. This gift was made possible by grants from CALL. A special thanks to CALL for being a blessing to the students at Elim and in turn to the children of Haiti. University of Michigan Law School. The knitting interest group has had a busy and productive year! Members of the group have been working on projects of their choice - hats, scarves, sweaters, socks, etc. We've experimented with needle felting and knitting socks from the toe up. If a few members want to learn how to do a special technique or project, we offer "mini" classes. At each meeting we have a show and tell time where members share their current and finished projects. We receive much encouragement and inspiration from each other! Two leaders, Diane VanderPol and Diane Noorman, are available to give assistance as needed.
