NEWS Volume 19, Number 1 Curiosity “Curiosity killed the cat” is a warning to persons not to extend their curiosity too far. However, curiosity can lead to adventure as well illustrated in the popular series of children’s books about Curious George. It is well known that a healthy curiosity is a driving force behind the sciences that explore many questions about the natural world. NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory even named their Mars robotic rover Curiosity, which was launched in 2011 to explore Mars to answer questions about Mars climate, geology, and environmental conditions. Curiosity is also important in education. Science education programs for elementary school students attempt to capture and nurture the innate curiosity of young people around what they observe. But curiosity is not only a characteristic of children. I am always impressed by the diverse curiosities shown by CALL members as they express their interest in a wide variety of courses, member events, and extended trips. Without this diverse interest and programming CALL would not have the broad appeal that has been demonstrated throughout its history. This is illustrated beautifully as you peruse the curriculum of 59 different courses offered this fall semester as well as the range of topics in the noon lecture program, the member events, and extended trips. The curriculum has courses on war (Civil, Cold, Middle September 2014 East), on famous and infamous people (Thomas Aquinas and Adolph Hitler); on religions (post Vatican II Catholicism, Islam, and ancient Israel) and on many other interesting topics. The Extended Trips, Member Events, and Noontime lectures also reflect a different curiosity in each of the offerings. The CALL Executive Committee invites you to another promising year for the Calvin Academy of Lifelong Learning. Let your curiosity guide you in making choices among the many CALL opportunities. This curiosity will not “kill the cat” but will enrich your life. Thank God for the gift of curiosity. Gordon Van Harn Vice President You should have received the 2014 Fall Curriculum Guide with the listing and description of the 59 class offerings. You may register for courses online or by mail.
