In the early morning hours, the day arises.
The first light glimmers.
There hasn’t been much time to sleep.
Yet already there is nothing to see in this tomb!
There is nothing to see in this tomb!
Like the earth in spring, it has broke open,
Given way to the first surges rising
Life has sprung forth, new, joyous, like a first-born!
There is nothing to see in this tomb.
Nothing to touch.
The Living One cannot be contained!
No living one can be contained!
Finally free, this life is now restored.
Free, it calls to us;
Free, it lifts us up out of fear!
There is nothing to see in this tomb!
Let the Good News spread like wildfire
Across the world!

Message from the Principal
Later this month, Christians all over the world will
celebrate Easter. The contrast of the helplessness and
sadness of Good Friday with the joy and celebration
three days later is awe inspiring. Jesus is risen, Alleluia!
Virtue of the Month
As we enter into the liturgical season of Easter, we are reminded
that while Lent consists of 40 days, the Easter season is
comprised of 50 days. This is a season for rejoicing. Easter is
the most holy season for Catholics as it is the core of our faith;
Jesus rose from the dead on Easter morning. This is the greatest
of days. It fills us with life and with love. Easter is not a story
of the past. Easter is a story for today. Easter is the story for
our reality! Catholics all over the world solemnly recall the
events that took place between Palm Sunday and Easter. We
believe that these are the most important events in the whole of
human history.
In His journey from being condemned to death outside the
Sanhedrin by Pontius Pilate, to His crucifixion on Calvary Hill,
Jesus suffered unbelievable pain and humiliation. We celebrate
the Way of the Cross with love, because Christ took these steps
out of obedience to his Father and of love for each one of us.
Paradoxically, we see in these awful events an amazing beauty.
Our Easter, our passage through death, is accomplished each
time we overcome the death of lies to reach the truth, each time
we overcome the death of bitterness to reach reconciliation and
each time we overcome the death of indifference to reach
compassion. Our Easter is accomplished each time we go, no
matter what the cost, towards a life of Christ centeredness.
In our own quiet way we are called to experience the resurrected
Jesus and allow Him to enter into our hearts. The empty tomb
is a reminder to us that when it seems the most impossible, God
keeps His promises! And just as the stone covering His tomb
was pushed away, we too are called to roll away the stone, let
Jesus into our lives and see the glory of God.
On behalf of the staff at St. Brigid, I wish you a
peaceful and joyous Easter, filled with the love that
Jesus showed us on the Cross.

Love
In April, we celebrate the virtue
of love. God has given us many
guidelines and examples of how
to live our lives. He sent his Son
Jesus to make sure that we could
see what life could be like.
Jesus made one lesson clear
above all other lessons – the
lesson to love. Love is not about
us – it is about forgetting
ourselves and looking out for
the good of the other. That’s
what Jesus did – he forgot about
himself on purpose. He chose to
give up his life for the good of
others – us! It takes prayer and
concentration to get used to
making little sacrifices for the
good of others. Making little
sacrifices on purpose so that
others will have a bit of food, a
bit of shelter, a bit of peace, a bit
of quiet, a bit of fun, a bit of
friendship. Through prayer and
concentration, we can get better
at showing love to everyone we
meet
A Loving Person…
 Wants the best for others
 Is willing to make sacrifices
for the good of others
 Learns from the heroic lives
of saints & holy people
 Knows that we are all
lovable
 Prays for others
EASTER MASS
Father Jan will be celebrating our Easter Mass on Thursday
May 8thin the school gymnasium, at 9:30 a.m. As always,
parents and family members are most welcome to join us in this
Eucharistic Celebration.
Reconciliation
Please note that on Tuesday April 8th at 7:30 pm. there will be
a Lenten Reconciliation at St. Jerome Church. All students,
especially those students that will be receiving the Sacrament
of Confirmation, are encouraged to attend and prepare for
Easter.
Each year, the Catholic community of Ontario engages in a
week-long celebration of the unique identity and distinctive
contributions of Catholic education during Catholic Education
Week. This year’s celebration entitled Catholic Education:
Serving in the love of Christ, is the week of May 4 – 10.
The five sub-themes this year are:
 Serve with faithfulness
 Serve with humility
 Serve with compassion
 Serve with justice
 Serve with joy.
During this week the Catholic community celebrates the unique
and distinctive contribution that Catholic schools make to our
students, our community and our Province. Catholic Education
Week is a welcome opportunity to celebrate the mission of our
Catholic schools as they strive to integrate the Gospel values of
Jesus in every aspect of the school’s life and curriculum.
Catholic Education Week begins on a Sunday to highlight the
partnership that remains the foundation of Catholic education
between our Catholic schools and local Catholic parishes.
Throughout Catholic Education Week, we ask you to reflect on
the significance of Catholic education’s presence and
contribution in our Church, and in our society. We invite all
members of our community, to participate in the celebrations
and activities that will mark the celebration of Catholic
Education Week 2014 in our schools.

OUR CATHOLIC SCHOOL
HERITAGE:
How did financial inequity return in the 1970’s?
With the economic downturn in Ontario, the government began
imposing limits to what school boards could spend. If any
board wished to exceed the expenditure limit, it would receive
no grant to accompany the amount of money spent over the
limit. Because the Metropolitan Toronto Board and the Ottawa
Boards of Education were so rich from corporation and public
utility assessment, they received no grants. The other urban
public school boards received only a small amount of grants.
On the other hand, the separate school boards existed on
government grants for 80% to 99%, depending on their amount
of assessment. Thus, separate school boards were confined to
the government’s expenditure ceilings, while public school
boards exercised their freedom to spend considerably over the
ceilings. Financial inequity returned and remained.
How did the Ontario government solve separate school
financial inequity?
In 1990, the Supreme Court of Canada judged that the Canadian
Constitution’s Charter of Right and Freedoms entitles
Francophones, where numbers warrant, to their own school
boards. French-language district school boards and Frenchlanguage Catholic district school boards were created.
Consequently, Ontario then had four school systems. Three of
them - the English-language Catholic district school boards, the French-language Catholic district school boards and the
French-language district school boards – had very little access
to corporate assessment. One of them - the English-language
district school board - possessed most of the province’s
corporate assessment and, therefore, ability to spend much
more than their counterparts on education. Faced with this
inequity and a court challenge it was convinced it would lose,
the government took the only logical and fair step. It abolished
the power of all school boards to tax, and took over all
education funding. Now each pupil, no matter which type of
school he or she attends, receives the same per-pupil funding
from the government. After 150 years of sacrifice and hardship,
the Catholic school boards have achieved financial equity.

to Your Inbox
We’re going to do our bit to help the
environment right here at St. Brigid School!
We’d like to drastically reduce the amount of
paper we use in the form of monthly newsletters
and other notices.
We’re in the process of making it possible for
all of our families to be part of a direct email
notification system. Not only will you be able
to receive your monthly newsletters in a timely
fashion but you’ll be able to receive notification
of other important notices as well (e.g., public
health notices).
Once you sign up we’ll stop distributing hard
copies of newsletters and notices to your
child(ren). And as an added bonus, you’ll never
have to go hunting for a newsletter or
information again…it’ll be a few short mouse
clicks away!
Please complete the following information and
return it to your child’s teacher:
Front Foyer Renovation
We are in the process of renovating our front foyer. We are
planning on placing a stone/glass mosaic of the Risen Christ on
the wall facing the front doors. As this is a major endeavour,
we will be asking for community/parent donations to help with
the costs of creating the mosaic. We are looking to raise
between 5,000 and 7,000 dollars. Please note that all money
raised will be used for the mosaic. A Charitable Donation
receipt will be issued by the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School
Board for donations of $ 25.00 and over.

Are You Moving?
We are in the process of planning classes and
staffing for the 2014/2015 school year. If you
are planning to move anytime between now and
September 2014, please inform the school at your earliest
possible convenience.
Class List Formation for 2014 - 2015
We will soon begin the process of making up the class lists for
next fall. This is a complex procedure which takes into
consideration not only the needs of the individual child, but
frames those needs in the context of the larger classroom group.
In each class we strive for a balance of learning styles, a balance
of gender, a balance of learning needs and a cross-section of
abilities.
The current teachers of a grade, support staff and administration
all take part in the process. If you wish to provide input into the
process, please take into consideration the following guidelines:
Input must be made in writing to the Principal no later than
April 30th, 2014. Requests should be made in terms of
educational
contexts,
e.g.
your
child’s
learning
needs/strengths/style, information not already known to the
school, best learning environment. Please do not make requests
for specific teachers as staffing is always tentative and changes
can take place between now and September.
Flexible Boundary Policy
Many students attend St. Brigid School under the “Flexible
Boundary policy”. This offers convenience for many parents
who access daycare in the area. Parents who have requested
flexible boundary admittance for their children must be aware
that the policy will be considered on a student-by-student, yearto-year basis taking into account the class size of the students
who are enrolling and the resources available at the school.
While we offer support to all of our students, please understand
that the availability of the flexible boundary policy should never
negatively impact on the class size and school resources.
Parents requesting flex boundaries are asked to do so in writing.
Please feel free to call the school if you have any questions
regarding this policy.
IMMUNIZE ON TIME.
REPORT EVERY TIME.
Autism Awareness Day: Light It Up Blue
We are asking all students and staff at St. Brigid to
wear BLUE on Wednesday April 2nd to show our
support and awareness for all children living with Autism.
Every year the month of April is designated as Autism
Awareness Month. Organizations around the world celebrate
the day with unique fundraising and awareness-raising events.
Autism is a complex developmental disability that impacts the
typical development of the brain in the areas of social
interaction and communication skills.
Green Team
The Green Team at St. Brigid has been very busy
this year implementing many green initiatives. We
have participated in events such as Think Green
Thursdays, Light-Out Lunchtime and Use GOOS (Good On
One Side) Paper.
On Saturday March 29, 2014 from 8:30-9:30 p.m. the entire
world was encouraged to participate in Earth Hour by turning
off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness
about environmental issues and show our commitment to
helping our Earth. We thank all the families who sent in their
Light bulb pledges for Earth Hour and trust that you enjoyed
the hour with your family. At school we had a great time on
Friday March 28th reading and learning about ways to “use our
superpowers” to help the environment.
Throughout the year we have been conducting Waste Audits
and Recycling Audits getting the Green Team and students
involved in evaluating our progress in being more waste
conscious.
We are beginning to plan a Peace Garden for the area to the side
of the school and the team is excited to be putting together a
plan and deciding what it will look like. The Green Team will
be selling popcorn and stainless steel water bottles with the St.
Brigid Logo to help support this school greening effort.
Tuesday April 22, 2014 is World Earth Day and at 1:00 p.m. we
will be having our assembly. At this time Ms. Cimolai will be
sharing with us her stories of her trip to Haiti and showing us
how we are helping to rebuild the land by collecting milk bags
to make mats. During Earth Week students will be participating
in “iWalk Week”, Earth Day movie, Spring Cleanup and Earth
Trivia questions. At the assembly, we will also be celebrating
the Green Team’s efforts and achievements of the year.
A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Mexner and family for all
they have done to help support our Green Team.

Pope John Paul II Bill Comes Into Force
Ontario will celebrate the legacy of Pope John Paul II on
Wednesday April 2nd, after MPP Dipika Damerla's Private
Member's Bill proclaiming April 2nd in each year as Pope John
Paul II Day, received Royal Assent. The Bill comes into force
immediately.
“This is a special day,” said MPP Damerla. “Pope John Paul II
was a universal figure and spiritual leader whose legacy is
marked by his strong commitment to peace, equality, human
rights, and multi-faith dialogue and understanding. It is this
special legacy that Ontario will now officially commemorate
every year on April 2.”
Cardinal Thomas Collins, Archbishop of Toronto stated, “We
celebrate the many contributions of Blessed John Paul II and
are pleased to learn that the Province of Ontario will recognize
his lasting legacy by commemorating Pope John Paul II Day on
April 2nd each year in Ontario.”
Diversity Team
The Diversity Team has had a busy few weeks. After our
February Virtue Assembly, we kicked off our “How Full is
Your Bucket?” campaign. Teachers and students alike are
encouraged to find positive messages to say to each other. For
example: “Thanks for helping me with my math work” or “I
really liked playing with you at recess today”. If you happen to
be in the school, please sign in at the office and then take a look
at our bucket display across from the vending machine.
On March 19, Gwyneth, Janai, Jann Rei, James and Jordan
accompanied Miss Graziani and Madame Dommanget to the
Diversity Conference, held in Mississauga. We were treated to
an inspiring talk from Anthony McLean, who speaks out
against bullying and stereotypes.
On March 20, the Diversity Team organised a short assembly
to celebrate The International Day of Happiness! Students were
led by the Primary Division in singing and dancing to Pharell
Williams’s song “Happy”! It was a fun time for everyone!
In a release by Premier Kathleen Wynne, she stated, “I am
pleased that Bill 72, An Act to proclaim April 2nd each year as
Pope John Paul II Day received Royal Assent today. Pope John
Paul II was Pope of the Roman Catholic Church from October
16, 1978 until his death on April 2, 2005. For 25 years, Pope
John Paul II was one of the most charismatic and beloved popes
for his courage and resolute defense of peace and human rights.
His papacy was marked by his unwavering opposition to
communism. He is often credited as contributing to its collapse
in Eastern Europe in 1990. Pope John Paul II fearlessly spoke
out against the wrongs he saw in the Soviet system and never
hesitated to confront its abuses. As a political and spiritual
leader, Pope John Paul II was dedicated to giving voice to those
in need and advocating on behalf of the oppressed. He inspired
the lives of Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Pope John Paul
II will be canonized on April 27th.
Pope John Paul II travelled the globe and was the first Pope to
visit Canada.
He came to Ontario twice during his
pontificate. He served as a beacon for hope, especially for
millions of youth who were encouraged by his message of faith
and activism.”
Safety Drills
Throughout the year, students and staff participate in fire and
lockdown practices. During these drills students are instructed
on specific procedures to follow. Fire and Lockdown practices
ensure that students are aware of procedures should an actual
emergency occur. These drills help to ensure the safety of all
students, staff, parents and community members that may be
visiting the school.
Bullying Prevention Corner
April’s anti-bullying theme is “If you’re
not part of the solution, you’re part of the
problem.” Research shows that bystanders
make or break bullying episodes – they
hold the power to stop bullying. They
provide the audience for students engaged
in bullying behaviours. We can all be part
of the solution by using the 3 R’s of
bullying: recognize that someone is being
bullied, refuse to let the bully pick on the
person, and report the bullying to an adult.
Tips for parents:
 encourage your children to show
empathy for others who are bullied
(befriend them, include them)
 teach your children to intervene
appropriately or walk away and tell
an adult
 role model being “part of the
solution” when you encounter
difficult situations in your life
Welcome to Kindergarten
All new junior kindergarten students that will be attending St.
Brigid School in September are invited to join us (along with
their parents) in our Welcome to Kindergarten evening, on
Wednesday May 7th, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Welcome to
Kindergarten is an orientation program, where families
participate in activities that will help junior kindergarten
students prepare for school. Please note that activities are only
for our new Junior Kindergarten students.
Chess Tournament
This year’s Mississauga Brampton Central Family of Schools
Chess Tournament will be held on Friday April 25 th at St.
Gertrude School in Mississauga. St. Brigid is proudly sending
5 students from each division to this tournament. Good luck to
all!
Math Mania
Congratulations to our intermediate Math Mania team who
participated in the Mississauga Brampton Central Family of
Math competition on Thursday March 27th. The students
displayed their skill and determination in the various strands of
math and finished 5th out of 15 teams. Thank you to their coach,
Mr. Fitzpatrick.
Parking Enforcement
City of Brampton Parking Enforcement officers have been
vigilant in enforcing city parking by-laws in the area around the
school. Please be aware of where you park your vehicle. There
are fire hydrants and other No Parking / No Stopping areas that
need to be observed.
Please note that vehicles in the Kiss ‘N’ Ride lane should not
be left unattended, as they could be ticketed. Please do not park
in the Kiss ‘N’ Ride Lanes and walk your child to their entry
point. If you wish to walk your child, we request that you park
on the street and escort your child. Cars parked in the Kiss ‘N’
Ride create a very dangerous situation and also impede the flow
of traffic.
When in the Kiss ‘N’ Ride lane, please have your child exit your
vehicle from the passenger side. It is very dangerous to exit out
into the “Drive Through Lane”. Also, we ask that all vehicles
move to the front of the Kiss ‘N’ Ride lane prior to letting out
students. Parents should remain in their vehicles while in the
Kiss ‘N’ Ride lane.
Also, please be aware that only vehicles that have a handicap
sign displayed in their vehicle are allowed to park in the
handicap parking spots in the school parking lot. Under no
conditions should vehicles without a handicap sign park in these
designated areas.
We respectfully request your co-operation when
driving and parking on school grounds.
Public Speaking:
Here at St. Brigid School we have a long tradition
of excellence in public speaking. This year, our
annual Public Speaking Contests will be held
during Education Week. Our Intermediate contest will be held
on Tuesday May 6th, and our Junior contest on Friday May
9th. Both presentations shall commence at 9:15 a.m. in the
gymnasium. Please join us for both competitions; you will
undoubtedly be both entertained and informed by our young
speakers!
Visitors to the School
For safety reasons, we are reminding the school community that
it is Board Policy that all visitors, including parents, volunteer
and former students, must come in the front door and report to
the office and sign in. Visitors that sign in will receive a St.
Brigid Visitor sticker. Staff and students look for these
identification stickers when they see someone in our halls who
they do not recognize. If someone does not have a visitor
sticker, the office will be notified. If you are picking up your
child, please report to the office and your child will be brought
to you. At no time should parents be roaming the halls. If your
child is in kindergarten and is late, please sign them in at the
office and we will bring them to their class.
Parents are also requested to remain outside the school yard
during school hours. Remember – to your child you are the
parent…to the other students you are a stranger. We want our
school to be a safe environment for all and your support in this
matter is greatly appreciated.
Transportation
Eligibility for transportation is determined based on distance
criteria established in Board policy. For Dufferin-Peel Catholic
District School Board, these are:
JK – Grade 1
Grades 2 – 4
Grades 5 – 8
Grades 9 – 12
1.0 kilometre
1.6 kilometres
2.0 kilometres
4.8 kilometres
Parents of students currently in grade 1, grade 4 and grade 8
should be aware that transportation eligibility status for your
child may change next year as your child moves, respectively,
to grades 2, 5 and 9. As the distance criteria increases at the
noted grade levels, students who are currently eligible for
transportation in grades 1, 4 and 8, may no longer be eligible
for transportation when they move to the next grade level.
Effective June 1, transportation eligibility information for
2014-2015 will be available on the transportation website. To
confirm the transportation eligibility status for your child for
the 2014-2015 school year, please access our website at
www.stopr.ca. Access the “Am I Eligible for Transportation?”
icon, select 2014-2015 and enter the required address, 20142015 grade level, and program information to obtain the
transportation eligibility status for your child.
Go to www.stopr.ca for
daily bus cancellations or
delays.

School Day and School Yard Supervision
Please remember that school yard supervision does not begin
until 8:35 a.m. For safety reasons, please do not send your child
to school until then. Our supervisors wear orange vests when
they are in the school yard, so that they can be easily visible to
a child in need. For reasons of safety, students are expected to
go home at the end of the school day, unless supervised by a
parent or staff member for a scheduled school activity.
Late Arrivals
We continue to have a number of students arriving at
school after the bell has rung. School begins
promptly at 8:50 am. Parents are encouraged to have
their children at school at least five minutes before the bell. Children
who are late must report to the office and sign in. Students who
arrive late for school are missing valuable learning time. Your
cooperation is appreciated.
