SENIOR BOYS...OFSSA CHAMPS!
Mr. K. McGuire, Principal
This has been an incredible year at St.
Edmund Campion Catholic Secondary.
From the time the doors of the school
opened in the fall until now, the pulse of
the school has been very strong. It will
require many pages to accurately sum
up the many great learning opportunities, the successes of our athletic and
co-curricular clubs, the outreach and
faith formation activities, and the good
work of our School Council. As a result
of a community of people who choose
to be involved, St. Edmund Campion
Secondary is alive and well.
Mr. Marcolla and his Pastoral Team
have been most active, welcoming,
and supportive of the faith formation of
our young adults. Whether it is through
the liturgies celebrated, the work with
our students as they explore their spirituality, the willingness to fill the chapel
with students to reflect, his direct involvement in Catholic Education Week,
or as a constant in the preparation of
our Pastoral Plan for the upcoming year,
we have been well supported and encouraged. Well done Mr. Marcolla and
Team.
The link between the home and the
school can only be strengthened when
parents become involved in the School
Council. All of our meetings provide a
great opportunity for parents to hear
what is happening in our school, and to
understand the challenges facing the
Board and ultimately their children. The
projects and the advice given through
the Council have resulted in some very
positive things happening for students.
Thank you for taking time from your
busy schedules to join the Council and
support the staff and students at St. Edmund Campion Catholic Secondary.
We have some very exciting initiatives
planned for next year so please join us
as many hands make workloads lighter.
Elections for the Council Executive will
take place early in the 2009 academic
year.
On June 22, we will celebrate the success of our graduating class at their
formal graduation. Over 400 students,
parents, guardians and staff will fill the
Powerade Center. It promises to be a
remarkable evening and one befitting
of the greatness of the students who will
be leaving us. This class consists of incredibly strong groups who have done
great things to make our school a great
place to learn. They have been a class
act in every way. From this class

two Student Trustees have served at the
Board to help make important decisions. We are proud of them, will miss
them, and we wish them we well in the
days ahead. Go well my friends.
Before they leave for a well earned rest
this summer, I would like to acknowledge the fine work of my Admin team
and the staff at St.Edmund Campion
Catholic Secondary School. The students here enjoy the success and the
opportunities they do because this staff
is the center of this great Bear heart. It
starts with them. They are terrific people, who day in and out, find ways to
connect with students and are committed to being a part of the student’s
academic and co-curricular life. The
hard work of the secretarial and custodial staff is exceptional as they quietly
work and create a beautiful place for
our students to learn.
On a sad note we say goodbye to Mr.
Compagnon as he begins work as a
new Principal at St. Thomas Aquinas.
Mr. Compagnon has served this community well and we wish him all the best
in his new digs. He is an exceptional
Vice-Principal and will no doubt be a
tremendous Principal. Mr. P. Arthurs will
join this fine community in the next few
weeks and I am sure he will learn very
quickly that we have great students in
this school and that great things happen here.
We also say goodbye to Ms.Campese
and wish her well in her new role as
Vice-Principal of Robert Hall Secondary
School. Ms. Campese has been a dear
friend and advocate to our community
and will be missed.
I hope that the Summer of 2009 will be
a time for families to celebrate, a time
to plan for the year ahead, and a time
for renewal and rest.

Students seek the chance to share faith. Some
choose to do it in a group setting, like in Youth
for Christ, and others through their actions for
example, the PEACE team. But for the last two
years, I have had the pleasure of working with
some of the best students that Campion has to
offer; students who take the time every
Wednesday evening and the occasional Period
1 class to sing their faith.
They have also assisted in the community as
well. This year the Campion Choir was asked to
sing at the Grade 8 confirmation at St. Aidan’s
Elementary School. They did a phenomenal job
and all in attendance were impressed at their
performance and professionalism.
It is with great sadness that I depart, as Director
of Music Ministry at Campion this year and I
would like to say thank you to the teachers that
have helped with the choir: Ms. Salmon, Ms. Fortier, Ms. Cerminara, Ms. Zubick and Ms. Ceolin.
And finally, to the students who show me and
the rest of the school, that its cool to sing God’s
praises and that singing is ‘truly’ like praying

who have sat there and shared with
me the challenges, conflicts, pressures, and obstacles they have had

prayer for all the students who have
yet to sit there, and ask God to be

May we all recognize the Christ who
walks beside us, and who carries us

much for us to handle.
I wish you all a safe, blessed, and

A select group of Campion students chose to
further develop their
leadership skills by participating in the SWOLE Program, featuring exToronto Argonaut Orlando Bowen and other
elite athletes. To this
point, Campion SWOLE
members have visited the
Cassie Campbell Center for team building and training, led a Habitat for Humanity build, participated in a Walk for Values and the
Top 20 Under 20. These SWOLE team members will also be leading
Summer Camps in the broader Campion community.
On Friday, May 15, 2009,
a group of students from
St. Edmund Campion,
under the supervision of
Mrs. Jones ( and some
very knowledgeable foremen), spent the day in
Scarborough lending a
helping hand to Habitat
for Humanity. Students
were given instructions,
shown how to handle
various tools, then set
about sawing, putting up walls, framing and blocking the 16 homes
currently under construction by Habitat. St. Edmund Campion is currently taking part in the SWOLE program, developed by Orlando Bowen. This initiative is a student leadership program which focuses on
student involvement in community. The gratitude expressed by Habitat, and the feeling of accomplishment made it a day that the students and teachers will never forget.
The SWOLE Program is funded by the Urban High Priority High School
Grant from the Ministry of Education.

Plan for your future!
A New Year 2009/10
Our school is capped and therefore,
any students who have not enrolled
may not be able to enroll come September, if our enrolment is reached.
All students had the opportunity to
finalize their course selections for next
year. Students have received timetables before they left in June. As a result, timetable changes were only entertained for legitimate reasons and
took place before students left for the
summer. If you have a concern about
your timetable, make sure you see a
counsellor before the summer!
Students may want to spend some time
thinking and exploring post-secondary
options, including the workforce, college, and university. This past April,
Guidance was proud to host a “PostSecondary Evening” where various colleges and universities came to offer information to all of our students and their
parents. For more information on postsecondary programs, students are invited to visit our website:
http://w3.dpcdsb.org/CAMPI
Volunteer
Hours
Summer is an excellent time for students to complete the required 40
hours of community service which is
a requirement for graduation. As
indicated in the Christian Community Passport, available on the
school web site, there are samples
of eligible and ineligible activities
outlined.
Grade 12 Course
Change Day
We are providing a special day
to allow our grade 12 students
the opportunity to prepare for
the next school year. We will be
entertaining serious course
change requests in Guidance
on Tuesday, September 1st between 8:00 and 1:00, 2009.
Many courses are full and the
best chance to get a timetable
change will be at this time! We
will do our best to accommodate any legitimate concerns
you may have.
For 2009:
Summer school is offered during
the month of July and is a perfect
opportunity for students to make
up failed credits or fast track and
take a new credit. The Guidance
team processed students’ application forms starting in April and
continued until the deadline. Students that were late and missed
the deadline must attend WALKIN REGISTRATION at the summer
school location of their choice.
Walk-in registration will take place
on Tuesday, June 30, between
9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. We
strongly recommend that students choosing this option get to
the location much earlier than
9:00. Please note that students
must have an application form
signed by their guidance counselor to be considered.
For information on resume skills
and summer employment, students should contact:

The SEARCH Program has come to the end of its first year of existence at St. Edmund Campion. It has been a very busy and
successful year for both the teachers and students that were
part of the program.
The students participated in two outdoor experiences throughout the year; a high ropes course at Silvercreek Outdoor Education Centre and a winter camping trip in Algonquin Park. Both
of these experiences helped students to develop various leadership and co-operative skills. Students were able to accomplish
many feats that they never would have the opportunity to even
attempt. These unique activities were funded by the Urban High
Priority High School Grant from the Ministry of Education.
The main goal of the program was to help students graduate by
June and this program has been able to accomplish this goal.
These students have already been accepted to college programs or have jobs waiting for them when they are done. Without this program, these students would not have been able to
graduate within the 2008-09 school year. Congratulations to all
of those students who were able to accomplish this goal!
Making the transition from school to work
was made easier for some 50 St. Edmund
Campion students who attended Mission Employable hosted by the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board and Peel District School
Board at the Pearson Convention Center.
Graduates had the opportunity to meet potential employers, industry associations and
community agencies. They were also inspired by the words of this year’s keynote
speaker, Ryan Porter, who spoke of the importance of decision-making and taking
ownership for one’s future.
As the school year comes to a close the Alternative Education
Program, Ms. Konnerth and students, have much to be proud of.
“The only way of
finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them
into the impossible.”
- Arthur C. Clarke
The Alt. Ed. Program is designed to offer another pathway and
opportunity for students to succeed. It aims to re-engage students as they build their leadership qualities both in the school
and in the greater community. This year’s class was busy working through interdisciplinary curriculum as well as participating in
many activities to help them to reach their personal and academic goals. These activities included a Leadership and High
Ropes course, Feeding the Homeless in Toronto, Helping to build
Christmas Trees for Campion Christmas, PEYA Tree Planting at Heartlake Conservation Area, Mission
Employable and Earthday events.
Congratulations are given to all
students who achieved their personal and academic goals this
year. A very special mention to
our first graduates Rachel D. and
Vincent V. for demonstrating hard
work and determination. May you
continue to strive for excellence!

Parents are welcome to forward community related information to Mr. Menanno at the
school, so that it can be
shared with our school community. If you would like more
information regarding this service please feel free to contact us at 905-846-7124.
The Technology Department has
ended its third season, of “EC
Morning News” with the assistance
of Mr. Menanno. For the third season, every morning, the school
news is broadcasted from the
Communications classroom in
room 321, and students and staff
have been participating on a
daily basis in the operations and
delivery of our school news. As
well, this is the third season the EC
Morning News Club has participated in the filming of Back to the
80’s, Cultural Fest, and all the dif-
ferent sports events throughout
the school. Channel 54 , added a
year ago, added EC Radio which
broadcasts all the new music the
students create throughout the
year and advertises all the events
throughout the school via the
close circuit TV network. Last but
not least, Senior Comtech Students in March 2009, competed
for the first time at Skills Canada
Regional competitions in the 3D
animation and captured the Gold

The last three months have been an extremely busy time for the French and International
Languages Department. During March Break, Ms. Pallotta along with Mr. De Sousa, Ms.
Faraone and Mr. Selvam, led a group of 26 students on an overseas excursion to Italy,
Monaco and France. The group left with high expectations of what they were to see and
do and they came back to Campion in awe.
On April 16, Mme Hanna accompanied Jericho T. and Celina W. to the Concours D’Art
Oratoire French Speaking Contest, held at the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board.
At the end of the competition, Jericho, who placed third in last year’s competition, came in second place in his division. Félicitations Jericho et bon travail!
On May 26, Sig.na Pallotta accompanied a group of students to the OATI Provincial Italian Contest which was held
at the University of Toronto, St. George Campus. For the third year in a row, the students at Campion made waves at
this annual competition: Gianfranco C. and Daniela C. both placed second in their respective divisions while
Lorenzo V. and Samantha I. both placed first with their entries in their respective divisions. Siamo molto orgogliosi del
vostro lavoro…tanti tanti auguri!
On May 28th, our French Club, under the direction of Mme Latendresse and Mme Spottiswood, and our Italian Club
under the direction of S. Di Muzio and Sig.na Pallotta, prepared pavilions at this year’s Culture Fest. The French Club
prepared the French Canada pavilion where students dressed the part of early settlers and offered maple sugar tarts
and baked beans. The students described and portrayed the typical day in the life of the early settlers during the
evening’s showcase. The Italian Club prepared the Italy pavilion where students offered many delicious treats as
they displayed various Italian artifacts and had information on hand regarding the recent earthquake that hit
Aquila, Italy. All students worked very hard to put the pavilions together and we appreciate their hard work and
dedication to language and culture. In addition, we would like to congratulate Mark G. who is this year’s recipient
of the French Club’s X-Award. Mille fois merci pour ton travail!
As this year comes to a close, we would like to wish all of our students a wonderful summer and look forward to seeing what the new school year has in store. Bonnes vacances et à bientôt!
Campion Participates in Volunteer
MBC Challenge
On Saturday April 18th, 15 members of the St. Edmund Campion
Community participated in the
Change the World- Ontario Youth
Volunteer Challenge. Working in
conjunction with Volunteer MBC,
the Region of Peel’s new volunteer
centre the student’s and staff participated in a spring clean up of
the school grounds and the Cassie
Campbell Community Centre. After spending the morning cleaning,
the students moved their environmental initiatives inside the building
where they
spent time
making bird
feeders and
birdhouses.
On Thursday April 2, 2009, eleven Grade Ten Career Path students set out
across the City of Brampton for a day of hands-on learning, interaction
and cooperation. The morning began with students using the internet to
determine the most efficient way to arrive at their destination, Bramalea
City Centre. Once there, students were required to complete an assignment that included networking with retailers in the mall for possible cooperative education placements and future considerations for employment.
Students represented St. Edmund
Campion in a positive manner. Using mature attitudes and Catholic
virtues, students were commended
by mall staff for their behaviour and
ability to interact with other adults
and themselves.
Thank you to all students who participated in the day. It was a successful day of learning outside of
the classroom!
Deanna Smitheram Award
On June 3rd, 2009 St. Edmund Campion student Samantha B. was
awarded the Deanna Smitheram award 2009. The award is sponsored
by The Council for Exceptional Children, Chapter 608 North-Peel Dufferin
and is given to an Identified Exceptional Student who has shown significant improvement in effort and academic performance. Presenting the
award to Samantha is Joan Sytsma.

Our school Play: “Back to the
80’s… A Totally Awesome
Musical!” was another Campion success due to the hard
work of the directors, cast
and crew! It had everyone
singing in the aisles! Mrs.
Czata Todd and Ms. Metallo
would like to congratulate
“The Company” for an amazing year of performances!
This past year, “The Company” performed a modern
day version of The Nativity
Story at The Coffee House, a
musical number at The Living
Arts Centre for World Theatre
Day, a student written script
by Lori R. for The Sears Festival
and the Two-Act Musical
“Back to the 80’s.” Mrs. Czata
Todd and Ms. Metallo would
like to thank all the amazing
students who have shown
professionalism and dedication in supporting “The Company.”
Thanks
to
Ms.
Picarazzi’s Grade 10 Visual
Arts students who helped with
the backdrops for “Back to
the 80’s…A totally Awesome
Musical.” We have talented
set designers in the making!
Next year promises to be just
as adventurous with many
performances already in the
works!!! See you in the fall!
This year, the Senior Band performed
for the first time ever at the Ontario
Band Association Music Festival under the direction of Mr. Kubicki and
proudly brought back a Silver
Award. To support their peers in the
Music Program, Ms. Dobson’s Junior
Band accompanied the Seniors for
a day of mentoring and observation. This was a truly spectacular
event for both Bands.
Other musical highlights this semester included a “Battle of the Bands”
In May, Ms. Rodricks’ Grade 9 Visual Arts
classes took an exciting and eye opening trip
to the Harbourfront Studio and Galleries. They
were able to interact in the installation “The
Rice Project” which was only in Toronto for a
limited time and were able to have the gallery
to themselves to view the Art Exhibit “Close
Distance.” Along the way, they walked
through the studios of Artists in Residence and
not only got to watch these artists in action,
but were able to create their own masterpieces in the Harborfront studios overlooking
the lake. We congratulate the Grade 9’s on
their Rubix Cube Centerpieces that they created for the “Back to the 80’s” Dinner Theatre.
These budding young artists later took their
cubes and recycled them into new sculptures:

Mr. Lamorte’s “A” Team
performed for the school musical,
and the Jam Club, Midi and Music
and Computers Class produced its
first CD “Rippin’ it Up!” (now on sale
through the Music Department).
On May 19, both the Senior and Junior Bands also performed at Wonderland’s School Music Festival under the direction of Mr. Kubicki and
Ms. Dobson-Schweig.
The beginning of Spring also marked an opportunity for Ms. Picarazzi and
Ms. Collins’ Grade 10 Media Arts Classes to visit the Ontario College of Art
and Design Graduate Art Show. While there, students had the opportunity
to explore the artistic and eclectic historical areas of Toronto by utilizing
their photographic skills. These amazing images were on display at the
Spring Art Show and Concert. Keep your eyes peeled for more from these
budding young photographic artists!
Ms. Rodricks’ Grade 12 Visual Arts students, with help from the Art Club,
created a series of paintings honoring the Saints. Their “Portraits of the
Saints” were displayed in the Chapel of the Catholic Education Center for
the Catholic Trustees of Ontario. The art was meaningful and served to create a more visual sacred space for their liturgies. The display was very well
received. Thank you graduates for this lovely gift honoring Catholic role
models! Our Director of Education, John Kostoff requested permission for
the paintings to be displayed at the Catholic Education Center, where they
were on display for three weeks.
The Campion Spring Art Show
and Concert was a huge success! The Matrix and Cafe
were full of Art and Music enthusiasts out for a night of entertainment. Congratulations to
Ms. Dobson, Mr. Lamorte and
Mr. Kubicki and their students
on a variety of exceptional musical performances and the
incredible Art work of Ms. Rodricks’, Ms. Collins’, Ms.
Picarazzi’s, Ms. Leye’s and Ms.
Ratulowski’s students. It was an
amazing turn out and Campion’s “Rippin’ it Up!” CD’s
were a hit!
The March for Life and Youth
for Christ Groups took care of
refreshments at the show, the
proceeds of which went to
Brampton Birthright (in solidarity
with the March for Life the
same week in Ottawa).
We really appreciate the support of Parents and Staff that
came out to show and their
enthusiasm for the Arts! Kudos
especially to
Mr. Kubicki on
his fantastic
farewell performance - he
will be greatly
missed!

that is directly related to these
courses. Our Citizenship Award is
given to the student who demonstrates civic awareness and democratic values outside of our school
community and demonstrates the
importance of participation in order
to improve our local, provincial, national or global community.
A high standard of excellence is not
just a theme common throughout
Campion’s student body, but also its
wonderful and dedicated staff! Congratulations to recent Premier’s

was honoured with the award at a
recent formal function at Atlantis at
Ontario Place with Premier Dalton

The prestigious
award was given to Mr. Cordeiro under the category of “New Teacher”,
after he was nominated earlier this
year by several of his peers after
making an immediate impact on the

In Academic news, Dufferin Peel and
St.Edmund Campion will be running
its first ever African Canadian History
Course (IDC 3O1) in the second semester next school year. The course
will examine the many contributions
of Black Canadians within the context of Canadian society and history,
and will trace the roots and heritage
of one of Canada’s earliest communities. The class will examine issues of
racism and oppression, and will celebrate the diversity of Canadian society. ALL students, regardless of colour or ethnic background, are en-
vourite and a respected member
of the CWS family. We look forward to seeing more of Mr. Cordeiro in the fall and upcoming
school year!
Not to be outdone, CWS’ own resident law guru, Ms. Stewart, was
recently appointed as the Dufferin
Peel Board Representative to the
Peel Justice Education Network
(PJEN), a division of the Ontario
Justice Education Network (OJEN),
a provincial governing body that
helps make a connection between the legal community and
the classroom. In her capacity as
the Board Representative, Ms.
Stewart will be responsible for helping to coordinate the annual
Mock Trial and Mock Bail tournaments for the entire region of Peel.
PJEN’s recognition of Ms. Stewart’s
contributions to Campion’s Law
program and various teams has
paid dividends. Congratulations
to Ms. Stewart!
Have a wonderful and safe break
and we will see you all in September!
CWS continues to actively use the school website for many of its

While Literacy is at the forefront of our Department goals, students also had the opportunity to celebrate Shakespeare.
To every thing there is a season, and a
time to every purpose under the heaven,
(Ecclesiastes 3:1), and so it is with anticipation that we look forward to the relaxation
associated with summer.
Students in grade 9 wrote the Mock Test
on April 2 which will help prepare them
and provide insight to next year’s test
which will be written on April 8, 2010. Passing the test is a requirement for graduation.
Students who were not successful on the
Mock Test will receive support again from
all their teachers in all classes in September. Additional support is available after
school and in our expanding ELS course.
Parents can work through OSSLT activities
with their children during the summer by
visiting www.eqao.com.
Congratulations to our grade 10 students
who achieved OUTSTANDING results this
year on the OSSLT. 88% of our students
who participated in the test were successful, which is an increase of 7% from last
year. Clearly, this is a reflection of student
effort and staff who are dedicated to supporting our cross discipline approach and
Literacy Plan that has been in place since
last year at Campion. Students who were
unsuccessful, will rewrite the test again
next year.
Ms. Ceolin’s and Ms. Ciufo’s grade nine classes “lived a blessed
time” (Macbeth, 2.3) when they attended Hart House Theatre
on April 23rd to watch a production of William Shakespeare’s
Macbeth. It should be noted that the trip was booked to coincide with the Bard’s birthday, and students appropriately celebrated the occasion by singing Happy Birthday, snacking on
cupcakes and enjoying the loot bags prepared for them by
their teachers.
Additionally, since “the play’s the thing” (Hamlet, 2.2), on
Wednesday May 27th Ms. Lorkovic took 30 grade 12 students to
Hart House Theatre to see Shakespeare’s most famous drama:
Hamlet. The production of the classic revealed to students
that they have more in common with the playwright’s characters than they think. After the live performance, students had
the opportunity to tour the grounds of University of Toronto.
The 2009-2010 guide of The Classical Theatre Project just arrived
and the line up of plays for next year from one of the most student friendly companies promises to be exciting, so look forward to more field trips next year!
As our summer break arrives, Shakespeare said it best: “Parting
is such sweet sorrow.” (Romeo and Juliet) Students
said their goodbyes to Ms. Burton, who has been an
integral addition to not only the English Department
but also to extra curricular activities and After
School Literacy sessions, and Ms. Kwan who has
passionately covered classes for the last 8 weeks.

This semester, Grade 11 student
Stephanie M. took part in the Write
the Wrong 2009 essay contest.
2009 is a significant year as it
marks the 50th anniversary of the
United Nations General Assembly’s
adoption of the Declaration of the
Rights of the Child, a document
outlining the innate rights entitled
to all children across the globe.
"Write the Wrong 2009" was an
initiative launched by Journalists
for Human Rights (jhr) in partnership with the Walrus Magazine.
The Canada-wide essay competition required high-school students
18 and under to compose an essay expressing their views on Children’s rights. I am pleased to say
that Stephanie received the
award of Hounorable Mention-a
distinction provided only to an
elite group of submissions. Well
Done Stephanie!

This year proved to be a successful year for Business Students.
With the launch of a new Business Leadership Club, FBLA, students were able to work together on three different SPEAK UP
initiatives funded by the Ministry of Education.
The Sport’s Marketing classes ventured into new territory this year
teaming with RICHO Coliseum in a joint venture with BMO Field.
Students were able to meet the management team of both organizations and learn marketing strategies.
Campion Student’s experienced NO LIMITS at the Toronto Annual No Limits Conference sponsored by the Chartered Accounts
of Ontario. The conference prepared senior Business Students to
Rule the world without limits. Students had the opportunity to
speak with Chartered Accountants from top businesses. They
asked questions, made contacts, and discovered where a CA
designation could take them.
We are happy and sad to say goodbye to Ms. Campese who will be leaving us as Department Head of Business as she ventures into her new role as Vice-Principal at Robert Hall Secondary School. The department staff and students will miss her. Best
of luck Ms. Campese.

The molecular structure that is the Science Department is changing in September. As certain individuals are leaving, others will be coming in. At the
close of the year, Mr. Huber and Mr. Selvam will be leaving the ‘padded cell
walls’ they once called the Campion
Science Department. They will surely be
missed!
In September, science students will encounter a change in the curriculum.
The grade nine programs will consist of
chemistry, electricity and space, but will
now include ecology. The grade ten
programs will continue with chemistry,
but will see the addition of optics, cli-
mate change/ecology and cell biology. There will be other changes to the
grade 11 and 12 senior biology, chemistry and physics programs.
It has been an ‘electrifying’ year in the
Science Department and we look forward to ‘seeing you’ from the other side
of the lens in September. Have a wonderful summer!

in the Science Department, please

Another exciting co-op semester has come to an end. We want
to congratulate all of our cooperative education students for all
their hard work and dedication shown in their work placements. The St. Edmund Campion “Showcase Showdown” was
also another success with over 60 students showcasing their coop placements to the school community. We would like to thank
all of our new employers and those employers who have been
dedicated to our co-op program over the past few years for all
their continued support.
Some of our new employers who have joined the Campion community include: LA Fitness, U-Save Auto and Truck Repair, Specialty Care Woodlawn, Urban Behaviour, North Peel Rehabilitation Clinic, and Green Park Homes, Mako Hair Architects, and Tee
Jay’s Sports Kitchen.
Next year, we would like to welcome close to 200
cooperative education students into the co-op
program. This will be a great opportunity for them
to discover and learn new skills and to help them
make decisions regarding their post-secondary
and career aspirations. See you in September!

On Thursday, May 27, St. Edmund
Campion hosted Culture Fest. St.
Edmund Campion opened its doors
to the community with a variety of
cultural pavilions. Pavilions exhibited their cultural foods, dance,
and wonderful facts about the history of the culture. This year cultural
groups performed a variety of cultural dances and skits on stage.

On Saturday May 23, 40 students
from St. Edmund Campion participated as volunteers in the Region
of Peel’s annual Water Festival held
at Heart Lake Conservation Area.
The Festival teaches the public
about water conservation and environmental awareness through interactive stations.
Our students
managed 10 of these stations with
great enthusiasm and maturity.
Once again our students were fine
ambassadors of St. Edmund Campion.

The third annual X-Awards ceremony was held on
June 3, 2009. Over one hundred and fifty students
and teachers arrived dressed to the nines and
ready to party. Dinner and dancing were enjoyed
by all. Overall, Campion was proud to recognize
33 “Most Valuable Member” award recipients for
their dedication to extracurriculars. Your enthusiasm for after school clubs and teams shows. You
make Campion more than just a school, you
make it a community. Thank you, Campion, for
your support of extracurriculars. You are “X”cellent! See you at next year’s X-Awards!

On a cold mid-March morning, 26 students and four staff members from St.
Edmund Campion met at Pearson International Airport and patiently waited for
their flight to be called. Though some
were weary and others nervous, overall
the group was filled with excitement as
they were about to embark on their 10
day European adventure.
Upon arriving in Rome we met with
warm people and even warmer temperatures. Then our “Amazing Race”
began as we visited Genzano, the Roman Catacombs, the Coliseum, Roman
Forum, Spanish Steps, the Vatican, and
the Sistine Chapel. We stood in wonderment as we imagined what it would
have been like to live during the time of
Caesar. We were in utter awe as we
stood underneath Michelangelo’s masterpiece. We were moved as we said a
silent prayer at Pope John Paul II’s tomb
and we were full of hope as we threw
our coins into the Trevi Fountain wishing
to one day return to the beautiful
“Eternal City”.
Our time in Rome was short lived as two
days after our arrival, Maria Daniela, our
tour director, and Luciano, our chauffeur, brought us to Assisi, the birthplace
of St. Francis and St. Claire, and then to
Florence. Here we experienced life on the
Arno, taking in the sights of the Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, the Duomo, the
Museum of Fine Arts and of course Michelangelo’s Statue of David. Though we did
have a short downpour, we still managed
to shop through the marketplace and
make our contribution to the local economy.
Our fifth day had us heading farther north
as we traveled to Pisa and climbed the
Leaning Tower. We continued to pass
through the Italian countryside until it was
time to say “Arrivederci Italia” and “Bonjour
France”. While staying in Cannes, we visited the gorgeous city of Nice and the Principality of Monaco. We walked along the
Promenade des Anglais, witnessed the
changing of the guard in Monaco, visited a
perfume factory, visited the palace in
Monaco, took pictures in Monte Carlo and
celebrated mass in Nice. We left dreaming of one day retiring and moving to
Monaco – once we win the lottery of
course!
Our last two days had us saying goodbye
to our chauffeur as we traveled to Paris via
the TGV. After some interesting experiences on the métro, we soon discovered
why they call Paris the “City of Lights”. Here
we saw l’Arc de Triomphe, the Opera
House, the Champs Élysées and Place
de la Concorde. We took a cruise
along the Seine River, visited Notre
Dame de Paris, saw the Mona Lisa at
the Louvre and climbed to the top of
the Eiffel Tower where we saw the entire city of Paris from above. As we
made our way to Charles de Gaulle
Airport on our last day, we were anxious to see our family and friends but
we left with heavy hearts as we longed
for the day that we would be able to
return to these beautiful countries.
On a personal note, I would like to
thank the 26 students who traveled
with us to Europe. You are an amazing
group of young adults who represented yourselves and Campion with
maturity and class. I wish you all the
best and hope that the memories we
created on this trip will last with you a
lifetime. To Mr. De Sousa, Ms. Faraone
and Mr. Selvam, thank you for giving
up your March Break to accompany
us. You were a great support system
and I will cherish you always.
Until our paths cross again,
Ms. Pallotta
In the Fall, CWS has a number of grandiose plans in the works to bring life to the curriculum through a variety of field
trips and with the use of guest speakers. The annual court house visit will of course be on the schedule for the law program, as well as a possible trip to Niagara Falls for Geographers. In September, the CWS department will begin marketing for the Boston Trip again (currently scheduled for Spring 2010). The trip will help to supplement the curriculum of
a number of courses in the CWS stable, namely the Grade 11 American History course as well as a whole host of others. As part of the trip agenda, participants will get an opportunity to tour the Boston area as well as attend a professional sporting event. Stay tuned for more information to come!

Campion’s Graphic Design Club is to
be commended for their tremendous
creativity, commitment, and teamwork
over the course of the 2008-2009 school
year. Members met weekly to create
promotional materials for teams, clubs
and school events. Thanks to Graphic
Design Club members: Heather A.,
Kevin A., Wendy M., Chantal F., James
J., Christine K., Barbara K., Shane H.,
Joanna W., Joanne B., and Brandon B.
for all their effort and dedication. Special congratulations go to club members Joanna W., who also represented
Campion at this year’s Skills competition, and Heather A, who won the
Graphic Design Club’s “Most Valuable
Member” award at last week’s XAwards ceremony. Great work everyone!
The A/V Club has been busy this
past spring with various set-ups
around the school. In April the
club set up mics for
the SWOLE assemblies, Battle of the
Bands, and the Badminton tournament
in the gym.
The
month of May was a
very busy time as
the club set up mics
for various motivational speakers in
the cafeteria, YPI
Finals, Nicaragua Presentations
and the Easter Masses. The club
also ran the sound and lighting for
the Spring Arts Show & Concert
and Moch Trials. The most challenging gig that the club worked
on was the school play which involved a number
of wireless microphones and music
cues.
The club
was
also
busy
throughout
the
month setting up
for Student Council events such as
Battle
of
the
Sexes. In June the
club worked on
the X-Awards and the Athletic Banquet. If you are interested in joining the A/V Club, see Mr. Biondich
in the Religion Department.
This September, the Canadian and World Studies Department will resurrect the United Nations Club. The UN Club is looking forward to running
more social justice events like ‘Trick or Treat for Hunger’ and ‘The Out of
the Cold Initiative’. As well we are looking forward to a competitive
season of Model UN activities.
On Thursday May 7, the little known Campion
Chess Team participated in the DPCDSB Secondary School Chess Tournament and placed 4th.
With 16 high schools represented, our Campion
Bears were able to complete the round-robin
stage in seventh place with a record of 17 wins
and 13 losses. In their quarter final match against
second seed St. Augustine, Campion managed a
shocking 3-2 upset setting up a semifinal against
St. Joan of Arc. Unfortunately, our Bears lost, placing them in the bronze medal game against Our
Lady of Mount Carmel. Despite missing out on a
medal, our Bears showed great pride and determination for a team that very nearly failed to
come into existence. Team members are David
N., Joshua T., Andrew R., Pero K., and Raphael D.
Well done Bears and good luck next year!
The Art Club had a busy year
creating centerpieces for the
Brampton West Seder Meal,
helping with the backdrops for
“Back to the 80’s,” Organizing
the “We Walk in Faith” display
for Catholic Education Week,
and helping with the “Portraits
of the Saints” display. Thankyou all for your hard work and
creativity this year!
The Boardwide Student Art
Show Images 2009 took place
at the end of April in the Mississauga Civic Center. Twentyone high schools across Dufferin-Peel participated in this
juried Art Show. Congratulations to the students of Ms.
Rodricks, Ms. Collins, Ms.
Picarazzi, Ms. Ratulowski and
Ms. Leyes who had their work
exhibited in this public venue.
You made Campion shine!
Parents and guardians, your
continued support of the Arts is
greatly appreciated. We look
forward to the return of your
sons and daughters in our Art,
Music and Drama classes in September!

From our very first day back at school running Rookie Rumble to our Battle of the Sexes Spirit Week at the end
of May (Congratulations Boys!), your Student Council has been hard at work! From spirit weeks to community
outreach to semi formal and the transition from grade 8 to 9 your Student Council has been working to create
a school environment where everyone can get involved!
Some of the Student Council highlights from 2008/09 include:
•
Rookie Rumble. We all know that starting high school isn’t always the easiest thing, so this year we helped
break the ice by getting homeroom classes to participate in different activities, competing for the top 3
spots.
•
Our second annual Alternative Trick or Treat where our school was open as a warm safe environment for
children in the community to have a whole lot of Halloween fun… not to mention lots candy!
•
W.O.W. (Wildin’ Out Wednesdays) Just to make sure no one was getting too bored in the middle of the
week we played DDR, Guitar Hero and even American Idol on lunches in November and March.
•
For our grade 11, not quite graduate students, we had Semi-Formal in February…this year’s theme:
Heaven on Earth.
•
Battle of the Sexes. Boys vs. Girls games all week long to see which gender is above the rest. You all know
the answer, but make sure you compete next year to see who will win the title for 2010!
In addition to the new events let’s not forget old favorites like: pictures with Santa, Halloween and Christmas
door decorating contests, pumpkin carving competitions, costume contests (in honour of Halloween and our
school musical Back to the 80’s), and of course Candy Grams!
Now, if you’re wondering where part of your
civvies day money went . . . here is the list of charities and good causes in our own
community, as well as other parts of the world that we as a student body contributed
to: Nicaragua Social Justice Group, Christmas in Kandahar, Covenant House, St. Jude
Academy, Knight’s Table, St. Louise Outreach, Continental Rescue Africa, Sharelife – Italian
Earthquake Relief, Our Place Community Centre of Hope, Canadian Food For Children, Birthright, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada, Salvation Army, Huband Cradle of Hope
Children’s Home and Eski-Missions.
So, don’t miss out on all the great events run by Student Council and make sure you’re a part
of them next year! For everyone graduating we wish you good luck and for everyone else
have a fun summer and we’ll see you soon!
We would also like to give a special thank you for all of the teachers and student volunteers
who helped made our events a great success: we couldn’t have done it without you!

The Future Business
Leaders Association
(FBLA) at St. Edmund Campion S.S.
kicked off “FBLA
Green Week” April 20-24. FBLA
was granted $500 through the
Speak-Up initiative sponsored by
the Ministry of Education to promote a cleaner community and
school.
On Wednesday April
22nd 80 Campion students came
together and cleaned up the
school community.
They collected approximately 60 bags of
garbage from the school parking
lot, fields and sidewalks. FBLA is
proud of their accomplishments,
of making the school community
cleaner.
The Future Business Leaders Association (FBLA) at
Campion hosted their first annual 3 on 3 Basketball
tournament at the Cassie Campbell Community Center
on May 15th. This tournament was sponsored by the
Ministry of Education, through the SPEAK UP initiative. The
FBLA students were granted $500 to host the event, and it
was a great success! The participants of the tournament
included grade 7& 8 students from two of our Feeder
schools Guardian Angels and St. Josephine Bakhita, with
St. Josephine Bakhita going home with first place. The
intent was to bridge the gap between elementary and
high school. Students had a fun day, filled with team
building activities, and a nail biting final game. Go FBLA!
CWS grade 10 Civics students continued to impress at the recent 2nd
annual Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) finals. YPI is a part of the
grade 10 Civics course; students
are required to choose one
charity within the social service sector after reviewing
many candidates in their
communities. Next, the students are expected to thoroughly
research that charity and complete
a site visit. The students then prepare a proposal for a request for
funding. Using presentation skills,
each student or team then introduces its local candidate organization to their own class. One proposal
is selected to represent that class in
a subsequent intramural competition. The final element in the
complete program has each
class team presenting proposals on the charities they
are championing to an independent judging panel. One of
these finalist teams will be given
$5,000 from the Toskan Casale Foundation to grant to the charity they
represented.
Future Business Leaders
Association (FBLA) hosted
“Change
the
Trend”
show, at Campion’s Culture Fest. It was packed
with amazing performances included dancing
and singing from: Philippines, Sri Lanka, India,
French Canada, Poland,
Trinidad, Africa, Ireland
and Jamaica. FBLA also
created beautiful sashes
that were worn by students representing their
culture. The “Change the
Trend” show was intended to create unity
amongst our school community. Special thanks to:
Gena S. and A.J. for being dynamic hosts of the
show.
St. Edmund Campion is excited to be participating in the NOW Program (Newcomer
Orientation Week) for its second year in a
row. The program will run at Campion
from Monday, August 24th until Thursday,
August 27th. Led by 10 current students,
newcomer students (students who have
recently moved to Canada) will have the
opportunity to learn about their new
school before the first day of classes. If you
have any questions or would like to sign up
for the NOW Program please contact

Campion Bears Win ROPSSAA & OFSAA
In what can only be described as “historical”, the
Senior Boys Soccer Team made Campion history on
June 6th, 2009 as they were crowned OFSAA Champions for the first time in school history. They capped
off an undefeated season by defeating St. Thomas
Aquinas (London) 2-1; (4-2 on penalties) in the
championship final held St. Mike’s in Toronto. This
marks the first team championship ever attained
before at Campion.
Highlights include Co-captain Jonathan “Oscore-io” netting some sensational goals in the semifinal match versus Cardinal Newman; scoring 3
goals to put the Bears into their first OFSAA final. After going down early in the match, Jonathan O.
scored a brilliant goal to tie it up before the half.
The teams remained deadlocked despite some glorious opportunities late in regulation time by Kwabena B. and Alex H. (a grade 9 call up from the junior team). Unable to score in extra time, the game
would end up being decided in a penalty shoot-out.
Alex H. scored the first spot kick, while Campion
goalie Antonio I. stopped the first Aquinas attempt.
Brandon S., Jonathan O. and Teniel G. would all net
their attempts leaving it up to Antonio to play the
heroes role. He did not disappoint as he saved the
fourth and final shot making the Bears victorious!
This capped off an undefeated season for
the team as they recorded an impressive 31-0-2 record, capturing 2 tournament championships for the
5th consecutive year. Coaches Galati and Spagnoli
would like to personally thank the entire team for
their dedication and commitment to the soccer program this year.
The coaching staff would also like to acknowledge the overwhelming support from Administration, staff, parents of the players and most importantly the students of St. Edmund Campion. This
year the program will graduate 6 players who have
all played an integral role in the building of this soccer program since its inception 5 years ago. We
would like to wish captain Nathan W., Lucas D., An-
thony B., Kwabena B., Tristan C. and Carlos N. all the
best in their future endeavours. You each played an
important role in the development of this soccer
program and you will all be sadly missed. To those
players who will be returning, the future looks bright
for next year’s squad.
The Lady Bears Softball Team finished their 2009 season with a big loss in the semi-finals. The ladies played hard
and ended their regular season with an amazing 4 – 1 record. All the coaches are very proud of the team and look
forward to another great season next year. Good luck to
all graduating seniors and thank you for your commitment
to the team through your years here at Campion. Way to
go Lady Bears!!

Campion has a rich tradition in Track and Field. With a gold medal at the OFSAA
Championships in each of the last 5 years, Campion was hoping to keep the success rolling. With a strong team returning from last year and the infusion of some
fast grade 9 athletes, the Campion Track program was looking to dominate the
Track and Field events. April 30th, St Edmund Campion hosted their second annual Track and Field Championship, attended by over 25 schools and 1000 athletes. The Track Meet was a huge success. Campion’s athletes were well represented and set a number of personal best in their events.
ROPSSAA saw Campion’s Track and Field Team do very well both on the Track
and in the Field. With over 45 athletes competing, Campion’s Team was able to
win the Midget Girls Overall Title, Senior Girls Overall Title and place Second in Boys
Overall standings.

OFSAA provided another opportunity for the Track team to compete against the
Province’s best. Campion sent 19 athletes, the most to date to the Provincial
Championships. All of whom had good performances and represented their
school well. We are very proud of you, Good Luck to the Seniors in their future
endeavours and look forward to a bright future on the Track and in the Field.
This past April, the Campion Power Cheerleading Team participated in the provincial
championship in Mississauga. Although suffering from multiple injuries, the team came
out and gave solid performances on both
Saturday and Sunday. As a result, the Campion power cheer team was awarded 4th place in the
province. Christen C. was also awarded a cheerleading
bursary for her dedication to the sport & her community.
Ms. Lindsay, Ms. Newton and Ms. Zucchiatti were proud
of the way the team conducted themselves at the Provincial. In true Campion fashion, they exemplified how to
be a Bear athlete. Congratulations go out to the entire
team for a great year.

The Boys Varsity Baseball team repeated their
great tradition winning their second consecutive
ROPSSAA title undefeated for two consecutive
years and going to OFSSA finishing 8th last year
and 5th this year just one game shy of the Prentice
Cup finals. Many of the young men are in grades 9
and 10 and will hopefully carry forward the tradition for
years to come. This year at OFSSA we had great hopes
to go to the Finals ranked as one of the top teams in
the GTA for the past 2 years, but lost one of our top
senior players Bobby M. in the first game and at his first
at bat.
We are so proud of the way our younger players
stepped up to fill the void winning the first 2 games 9-4
and 12-5. They faced the top ranked Notre Dame and
Pickering and came up just short losing 3-0 but never
giving up until the final out. Many said that it was the
best game the saw all year and the best team they
faced all year. The officiating crew said at the mannerism and professionalism of our boys. The executive
of OFSSA at the games had nothing but praise as well
and to go further by saying that it was the first time ever
that a player has ever offered to help with the field
preparation. We do have great student athletes who are
great ambassadors of our school in and about the
greater GTA community.
These accomplishments do not happen by themselves
without the time, hard work and dedication of the
coaching staff Mr. Novia, Ms. DeSantis, Mr. Weatherbee
and Mr. Tambureno. They have spent endless hours instructing, supervising and coaching these students and
helping some achieve success in their sport by receiving scholarships in the United States. We are so
proud to be part of such a successful team and
staff and know that our students and staff at Campion are the best.
The Campion Football Program brought its year to a close with an eye on the 2009 season. During the closing weeks
of May, members of the senior and junior team, along with football hopefuls who will be trying out next year, participated in the annual football combine and mini-camp.
The one-day combine presented players with a number of challenges: in the weight room, players demonstrated their
strength and endurance; in the gym, their speed and agility. During the two-day camp, players were introduced to
fundamental tackling forms, basic footwork, and positional skills. Though the combine and camp were by no means
tryouts, they allowed coaches an early glimpse at the quality of our Campion athletes. There will be another minicamp in early September; tryouts will begin thereafter.
For anyone interested in trying out for next year’s teams (and for any other important information, please refer to the
Football website throughout the summer. The website will fill you in on all the costs, dates, and expectations.

This year the Senior Girls Soccer Team finished in third place with a season record of
3-1-3. The girls competed in 2 tournaments
and hosted their First Annual Varsity Girls
Tournament. Coaches Mikulic and Garthson are proud of the girls team effort in
competing in the Senior quarter finals, the
girls played with integrity and determination. We want to wish the graduating players; Amanda S., Jenevieve N., Iris G., StacieAnn S., and Lauren N. best of luck in their
post secondary education.
The 2009 season was an intensive and exciting year for the Junior
Girls Soccer team, which consisted of fourteen grade 9’s and only
two grade 10’s. We started our season early and participated in
an indoor soccer tournament in late March. The girls received second place, where they unfortunately lost in penalties. The girls continued to fight through a tough season to earn a winning record of
6-2-0. Both Coach Byrnes were extremely proud of these young
ladies and look forward to another great season next year. Ladies,
thank you for your hard work and dedication throughout the year.

athleticism and sheer will, our girls tied Bramalea and defeated Notre Dame. This placed the team into the forth
spot of the ROPSSAA semi-finals, a feat that was unexpected but well deserved. The match-up against veteran
squad Port Credit proved too difficult for the girls despite
their greatest efforts.
This year, Rugby was introduced to Campion with much
excitement. Training sessions started indoors in February
where the girls learned the basic skills and game-play of
rugby. The team was chosen in early April and the girls
started intensive rugby training. This training included ballhandling, tackling and positional skills.
The season started off slow with an exhibition loss to Holy
Name of Mary. The girls bounced back pummeling Sandalwood in their first league game. The games that followed were tough losses to powerhouse squads Aquinas
and Chinguacousy. However, through perseverance,
The rugby season was very demanding and the girls had
their share of injuries. The players showed great determination to learn their sport and to play through pain and
fatigue. With the leadership help of Mercedes I., our diverse group of girls came together and supported each
other on and off the field, showing true sportsmanship.
Coaches Bamford and Primi thoroughly enjoyed coaching Campion’s first Rugby team. We look forward to, and
expect all returning players (and new players) to come
out next spring!!
Peel All-Stars
On Saturday, May 30th, four of our team members played
for Team North at the Peel All-Star Game. Amanda E.,
Natalie K., Nikkian H. and Amanda U. had the opportunity
to play at a higher level, and give exposure to the Campion Rugby Program. The girls had a great time and enjoyed making connections with the Brampton Rugby Club
program.

The Jr. Boys Soccer team had a successful start to their season. The team
participated in two tournaments, one
of which they hosted, and advanced
to the tournament of Champions.
The team had 7-0-1 season matching
last years record. Unfortunately, Their
quest for a second straight ROPSSA
title came to an early end after a
narrow lost in the first round of the
playoffs. Coaches Camilleri, Durigon,
Tonello, and Lauc are all very proud
of their team’s achievements, hard
work, and determination throughout
the entire season.
