Prayer for Respect
Almighty God, giver of all that is good.
We thank you for the precious gift of human life.
Guide us to respect all life.
Like St. Francis, help us to see the beauty and
Goodness in all living things.
Help us to imitate your respect for life.
For the life of children,
making us glad with their enthusiasm,
For the life of young people, hoping for a better world,
For the life of the sick and disabled, teaching us humility,
For the life of the elderly, witnessing patience and wisdom.
We thank you Lord.
Like Blessed Mary, may we always say yes to your gift of life.
May we have respect for all.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

CURRICULUM FOCUS
COLD WEATHER GUIDELINES
READING TIPS
At times, the weather conditions will not allow students
to go outside for recess. School staff follow the DufferinPeel Catholic District School Board Policy and the Peel
Public Health Cold Weather Guidelines which direct
schools to modify recess when temperatures reach -20 0C
(with or without wind chill) so they are outside for no
longer than 20 minutes. If the temperature outside reaches -25 0C (with
or without wind chill), the Board policy states that all children will be kept
indoors. We continue to monitor
weather conditions regularly throughout the day and make decisions based
upon our local conditions. Please
ensure students come dressed with
hats, mitts and boots every day. An extra pair of mitts and
socks is a good idea, too. Should any student need mittens or a hat, there are plenty available at the office; students just need to let their teacher know.
Daily reading is a great way to spend time with your child
and help foster a love for reading. Here are some helpful
tips for reading with young children:










Don't leave home without it: Bring along a book or
magazine any time your child has to wait, such as at a doctor's office. Always try to fit in reading!
Once is not enough: Encourage your child to re-read
favorite books and poems. Re-reading helps kids read more
quickly and accurately.
Dig deeper into the story: Ask your child questions
about the story you've just read. Say something like, "Why
do you think Clifford did that?"
Take control of the television: It's difficult for reading to
compete with TV and video games. Encourage reading as a
free-time activity.
Be patient: When your child is trying to sound out an
unfamiliar word, give him or her time to do so. Remind
your child to look closely at the first letter or letters of the
word.
Pick books that are at the right level: Help your child
pick books that are not too difficult. The aim is to give your
child lots of successful reading experiences.
Play word games: Have your child sound out the word as
you change it from mat to fat to sat; from sat to sag to sap;
and from sap to sip.
I read to you, you read to me: Take turns reading aloud
at bedtime. Kids enjoy this special time with their parents.
Gently correct your young reader: When your child
makes a mistake, gently point out the letters he or she overlooked or read incorrectly. Many beginning readers will
guess wildly at a word based on its first letter.
Talk, talk, talk! Talk with your child every day about
school and things going on around the house. Sprinkle
some interesting words into the conversation, and build on
words you've talked about in the past.

NATIONAL SWEATER DAY
On Thursday, February 5, Dufferin-Peel Catholic schools and
board sites will turn down the heat and put on a sweater in honour of World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) National Sweater Day. The
event is held each year across Canada to raise awareness about
the importance of energy conservation.
According to the WWF, heating makes up 80% of all energy
used in homes and schools across Canada. If every Canadian
home and school turned down the temperature of their home or
school by two degrees during the winter for four months, that
would save enough energy to close an entire coal-powered plant.
Dufferin-Peel has adopted the theme
of “My Sweater Has a Story Day”. Staff
and students will be encouraged to
wear their favorite sweater and share
why it is special.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES
SKI TRIP
The second date for skiing is scheduled for March 6 for
students in Grades 6-8. Students can still sign up if interested. The due date for payment and permission forms is
February 19. St. Anne students will only be participating
in skiing. Information letters to go home soon.

This is a mentoring program designed to provide 11-14
year old boys with information and support to make informed choices about healthy practices while openly discussing current and pressing issues facing young boys.

ONLINE REPORTING TOOL
FOR STUDENTS
Dufferin-Peel CDSB has decided to implement an online
reporting tool for students to report bullying incidents
and negative behaviours that would impact their school
community. This is an alternate option available to students. We still strongly encourage students to talk to a
responsible adult at school. Should students wish to use
the online reporting tool, they will find a link on the
school website. They will be prompted to answer eight
questions and the report will be emailed directly to school
administrators who will deal with the incidents accordingly. Students are not required to leave their name, however, anonymity is not guaranteed as they may be identified
based on the nature of the report.
SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS

PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWS
The parent/teacher meeting is an important time to share
ideas and information with your child's teacher. You can
also discuss ways to help your child develop strengths and
overcome challenges. These 10 tips will help you get the
most out of your time with the teacher.
1. Be prepared. Before meeting the teacher, think about
what you want to know and understand about your child's
school experience. Review the report card and write down
key questions you want to ask.
2. Ask yourself questions. Focus on what you want to
get out of your parent/teacher meeting by asking yourself
questions. For example, "What methods are being used to
teach my child?" or "What can I do to get involved in my
child's learning?"
3. Talk to your child before. Ask your children what
they think they are good at and what needs improving. Let
them tell you how they feel about school, the teacher and
getting along with others.
4. Arrive ready. Be sure you come to the parent/teacher
meeting in a positive frame of mind and with all the materials you need. Bring the questions you prepared in advance along with your child's report card.
5. Relax and feel confident. You know your child best
and want what's best. Remember, the teacher also wants
your child to be successful.
6. Be clear about what's being said. If you need clarification or have concerns about an answer the teacher
gives, ask the teacher to explain it further. Don't be satisfied until you fully understand.
7. Think about what was discussed. Take some time to
think about what you and the teacher talked about. If you
are still unclear about something or want to ask more
questions, don't be afraid to call the teacher to talk further.
8. Follow-up at home. Talk with your child after you
have met with the teacher. Discuss what was talked about
in the meeting, focusing on the positive and how to
achieve the goals that you set.
9. Keep a log or journal. Write down the actions you
take and any observations about your child. This is important information that can be shared with the teacher at
the next meeting.
10. Arrange the next meeting. Set a date when you will
call the teacher for an update on your child's progress or
to arrange another meeting.
