Religion Department Course Code: HZT 4U1 Course Name: Philosophy level: university prerequisite: Any university or university course in English, and HRE 3M (World Religions). Course Overview: This course addresses three (or more) of the main areas of philosophy: research and inquiry skills (logic), metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics. Students will learn critical thinking skills, the main ideas expressed by philosophers from a variety of the world’s traditions, especially Catholic philosophers, how to develop and explain their own philosophical ideas, and how to apply those ideas to contemporary social issues and personal experiences. The course will also help students refine skills used in researching and investigating topics in philosophy. Specific Strands of Study and Expectations include: Unit 1: Introduction and Human Nature Unit 2: Human Nature Unit 3: Metaphysics Unit 4: epistemology Unit 5: ethics Course Breakdown / Evaluation Structure Resources: Your Term Mark (70%) will consist of the following mark breakdown: TEXTBOOK – Philosophy—A Test with Readings Knowledge & Understanding Unit Tests, Chapter Quizzes, Assignments (25%) Thinking Unit Tests, Chapter Quizzes, Assignments (25%) – Any damage or loss incurred will result in payment for replacement. The replacement cost of the textbook will be $105.00. Students will also have use of the Bible, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). Communication Unit Tests, Projects, Presentations, Investigations, Case Studies (25%) Evaluation Policy Making Connections Unit Tests, Unit Culmination Projects (25%) Your summative work (30%) at the end of the course will consist of: Culminating Activity (10%) Final Examination (20%) Late assignments may be deducted 5% after the first day and 1% thereafter to a maximum of 10%. Students who hand in work after a teacher has returned the summative may be a zero. Students who are truant from tests and in-class assignments may receive a zero. Cheating and plagiarism may result in a mark of zero. Mitigating circumstances and professional judgment will always be important factors in all matters of assessment and evaluation. Should you be absent due to illness or other relevant reasons, please provide a note upon your return to your teacher. . Students marks will be determined using the 4 categories and the 4 levels/percentage grade. Skills like working independently, team work, organization, work habits and homework, and initiative are assessed independently. Student achievement will be conducted through the use of a rubric indicating specific criteria to be achieved to receive each of the following letter grades: E –Excellent G – Good S – Satisfactory N - Needs Improvement Other Evaluation Issues: Students will receive a 5% penalty for late assignments up to a maximum of 10%. An assignment not handed in before the teacher returns the same assignment will receive a mark of zero. A zero will be assigned for cheating and plagiarism. Mitigating circumstances and teacher discretion will always be paramount in matters of summative evaluations.
