Essay Writing
Mrs. Efpatridis
Sample Introduction
Do you know what strategies to use when writing an expository essay? There are several methods
you can use to capture the attention of your reader. Then you must create a harnessing sentence that will
connect the text, the author, and the topic back to your hook. At this point you introduce your arguments:
one sentence for each. Arguments are the points you will prove. Generally, there is one point proven in
each body paragraph through a series of details, facts, quotations and supporting evidence from a text
along with analysis of how the examples or details prove your points. Students can write a better essay if
they pay attention to format. Students will also improve their essay writing if they master a few critical
grammar conventions. Finally, students can only improve their writing if they listen to the feedback that
they receive from their teacher. Overall, writing is an essential skill needed in any profession because
without the ability to convey your ideas clearly, you will fail to communicate your thoughts through
words.
Here are a few examples of hooks that will eventually lead into a thesis:
Quote: "A man's errors are his portals of discovery."
For the thesis: Students grow more confident and self-sufficient when parents allow them to make mistakes and
experience failure.
Fact: Many studies show that the biological sleep pattern for teens shifts a few hours, which means teens
naturally stay up later and feel alert later in the morning.
For the thesis: If every school day started at ten o'clock, many students would find it easier to stay focused.
Statistic: According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, teens and young adults experience the highest rates of
violent crime.
For the thesis: Parents are justified in implementing a strict curfew, regardless of a student's academic
performance.
