ACTION ITEMS 1. Agenda was approved (with date correction). 2. Minutes from March 20, 2014 were approved with corrections . INFORMATION/DISCUSSION/PRESENTATIONS Terri Pyer 1. Our Strategic Plan page Terri distributed a copy of the strategic plan page. 2. Getting to know you activity (from diversity training) Terri Pyer Terri distributed an activity called “First Impressions,” and said that this was the kind of activity that we could recommend be added to meetings and events to help break the ice and come to appreciate our similarities. Ann said that the activity was close to what she was going to be presenting in her demonstration, so the group did not do the activity. 3. Annual Calendar of activities Peter Calvert Peter stated that he sent an email to Augustine but that he is busy with upcoming associate student elections and rewriting responsibilities of each position. Peter also stated that Augustine’s intention is to have at least one student officer represent on this committee. Liz commented that we should use diversity funds to coordinate calendar of activities and events and that she wishes we had strategic planning as far as how we should start and make it more welcoming to everyone. Ann stressed that statistically it won’t change anything as it has to be a commitment from the top down, and that we need administration to buy in. Ann said that she had spoken to the President about having a diversity CEO person on campus. Ann asked that we add this to agenda for discussion in the future. 1 Hartnell College Mission Statement Hartnell College provides the leadership and resources to ensure that all students shall have equal access to a quality education and the opportunity to pursue and achieve their goals. We are responsive to the learning needs of our community and dedicated to a diverse educational and cultural campus environment that prepares our students for productive participation in a changing world. 4. Our own lessons, voices Ann de Jesus Riley/Peter Calvert Ann distributed a document called “The Wheel,” and presented a lesson that pointed out how our lives would be different if one characteristic—e.g., race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, physical abilities, education status, geography—changed, and how those impacts might be felt socially, politically, or economically. Ann asserted that stereotypes are used for oppression. A lively discussion ensued. Ann showed a You Tube video titled “A girl like me,” recreating the doll study (Kenneth Clark) relied on in the 1954, Brown vs Board of Education Supreme Court case, and said that our country is still as segregated now as it was then. Peter presented his lesson on language and culture. Peter commented that he has his master’s degree in human relations and did his thesis on language and culture. Peter developed two specific tools, mix of native and non-native diverse classes. Peter commented that when we fail to teach students to write and speak standard business English, it’s subtle racism. He showed how he teaches etymology, slows down his speech, writes words on the board, and enunciates clearly to ensure that all students are developing their English language skills. Peter stated that his students have a real desire to master the English language and so he is going to give assignments to students for extra credit and everyone has to participate. Peter commented that we can’t understand our students unless we know their culture and their language. Liz Estrella did not present an activity, as she needed to leave at 3, and the invitation to do so had been issued with very little notice. 5. Melissa will hold off until next meeting to conduct her presentation (Oral History project from TWS). 6. Terri will hold off until next scheduled meeting to discuss “Voices of Hartnell.” 7. Ann De Jesus Riley will hold off until next scheduled meeting to discuss “Creation of a mural at Hartnell by CSUMB’s VPA dept and Hartnell faculty. OTHER ITEMS/BRIEF ANNOUNCEMENTS 1.
