Strategic Plan implementation – Terri shared that the Board will receive an update on strategic plan implementation in November, and that the strategic goals related to diversity will be among the goals reported on. She showed us the documents that will be used to report progress. One of the requirements coming up for us is to do a campus climate survey. Liz suggested that we get assistance from the IPE Office. T.Pyer 2. Diversity Training Update – The Diversity Committee hosted two presentations on Diversity Hiring in California Community Colleges on Friday, March 6, presented by Laura Schulkind, a partner at Liebert Cassidy Whitmore. This training was very well received. Approximately 90 employees were not able to attend either of these trainings because of schedule conflicts, so Ms. Schulkind will be presenting again on Friday, March 27. T. Pyer 3. Dr. Jimenez is interested in working with us, but not until after the busy spring semester. T. Pyer 4. Calendar of Events – The Educator in Residence just concluded her March visit, which included a public lecture on global and gender perspectives on depression on Thursday night, and workshops with staff earlier today. The events were well attended and received. T. Pyer 5. Website ideas – Terri shared two different college websites, one from the CSU system and one from the CCC system, to spur a discussion about what our web presence should include. The group particularly liked CSUSB’s lecture series called “Conversations on Diversity” and their grants to support guest speakers. We floated an idea about asking each department on campus to come up with a presentation they could make if we have a “conversations on diversity” series. T.Pyer OTHER ITEMS/BRIEF ANNOUNCEMENTS 1. Cultural Competency – Liz renewed our previous discussion of cultural competency, and mentioned the name of Donnae Smith, Program Coordinator of UCSC’s Diversity and Inclusion program of Stevenson College, as a potential workshop leader/speaker on the subject. She gives trainings on cultural intelligence, the power of language, white privilege, cross-cultural communication, and moving cultural diversity from the margins to the center. We also should talk to Jason Hough about presenting a talk on intercultural communication. These could kick off our own “conversations about diversity” program. L. Estrella 2. Brenda shared that, with the students involved in her program, it was very powerful to offer programs not only for the students, but also for the parents so that the parents could meet other parents and feel more comfortable with what the college experience was all about for their children. She mentioned the UCSC model of tying this to an event already in place. Liz talked about the program she worked on with a student a few years back to host a dinner for Latina mothers and daughters about going to college. B.
