INFORMATION/DISCUSSION/PRESENTATIONS
1. Hartnell EEO Demographics 2014-15
Terri Pyer
Terri shared a power point slide of the statewide diversity statistics reported by the Chancellor’s Office, as well as
Hartnell’s numbers, which are reported to the Chancellor’s Office each fall (she shared fall 2014). Different on the
statewide slide is that “underrepresented groups” does not include Asian, whereas our reports will include Asian as a
category of underrepresented groups. Our total workforce hasn’t changed much in the last two years. The graphs
show that the ethnic and gender demographics of our classified work force is similar to that of our students, our
administrator/managers is less so, and faculty, both full- and part-time, even less than that. Still, Hartnell’s
demographics in all of these categories is better than those of the state. These data will be part of what we put in our
EEO plan. The group discussed strategic efforts to recruit for diversity.
2. October 22, update on The Big Read, the blog, Tortilla Curtain

Hartnell College Mission Statement
Hartnell College provides the leadership and resources to ensure that all students shall have equal access to a quality education and the opportunity to
pursue and achieve their goals. We are responsive to the learning needs of our community and dedicated to a diverse educational and cultural campus
environment that prepares our students for productive participation in a changing world.
Melissa updated the committee regarding Tortilla Curtain. There were a lot of signups for the bookclub the first day,
but signups had leveled off since. The blog is up. Melissa also mentioned that Mathew Spangler is ready to come to
Hartnell, but needs direction as to what we want him to discuss. Melissa also needs a time of when he is going to
present and explained that we will need to try to get more people to help out. Melissa also asked for feedback/ideas
as to how we get people to come out to see this. Gabriel Bravo said that he would have it as an assignment for
students to get extra credit. Discussion centered around the suggested date and time of this event, how to get
students interested in attending, and how to make it easy to find the blog. Taylor Finnell wil engage his history
students in this project as well.
3. Report on Chancellor’s Office Training
T.Pyer/N.Torres-Zuniga
Nora shared with committee that she and Alma are going to the EEO/Faculty Diversity Summit at DeAnza College on
November 2, 2015 which is being co-sponsored by the Chancellor’s Office and Academic Senate of California
Community Colleges. Nora shared that the Chancellor’s Office had provided a three-part webinar series to community
colleges centered around EEO laws and District policies/procedures, best practices and law on selection committees,
and making the hire and promoting inclusion.
4. Ideas for Spring Event
Terri Pyer
Terri asked the committee to think about some event ideas for Spring. It could be around literature or something
very different.
