10 media arts: name:______________________________ Type Karaoke Task: Using Adobe Illustrator, recreate the verse of a song with typography. You must represent the style & dynamics of the song in a visual manner using only type (no images what so ever.) It will be as if the person viewing the artwork can see characteristics of how the song is performed without having listened to the music. NOTE: You ARE NOT representing the meaning in the lyrics (i.e. The word love does not need to be heart-shaped and pink). Rather, the style of the song and how it is articulated by the artist and/or music group performing it. TIP: Choose a song that is dynamic enough to recreate. Songs with a lot of contrast (i.e. male vs. female voices; fast or slow tempos; loud vs. soft singing) work best when recreating visually. When analyzing the song chosen consider: The style of music The gender of singer(s) How certain works are articulated, emphasized, elongated, repeated How many voices are singing When designing with topography consider; The appropriateness of the typeface in your design The use of upper case and lower case characters The point sizes to be used Colour, outlines, drops shadows etc. The kerning between letters (drastically space out characters or close enough to be touching) The leading between lines (far apart or very close) Overlapping, intertwining, rotating and flipping letters Positive and negative letters The elements and principles of design in your composition especially colour, space, line, movement, balance, center of interest etc… You will Hand in: -Design Diary prep work -An 8*10 inch Illustrator file with your Type Karaoke composition -A sound file of the song chosen & evaluation Design Diary Prep work: 1. Paste or copy out the lyrics of the chosen song (Remember, no song with swearing, offensive language or alluding to questionable behavior will be allowed for this assignment). Also include the song’s title and singer/band who performs the song. 2. Draw a table in your DD with the following headings: Lyric(s) Describe AUDIBLE Characteristics 1. 2. Explain/Sketch VISUAL Possibilities 3. While listening to the song chosen, complete the table explaining 1o examples to be used in your design.
